bashinator··on Police Seized Innocent Peoples Property, Kept It for Years. What Will SCOTUS Do?
“Both sides are equally bad” was particularly effective Russian social media trolling leading into 2016. Glad that bullshit is thoroughly discredited.
bashinator··on Police Seized Innocent Peoples Property, Kept It for Years. What Will SCOTUS Do?
Okay, let me rephrase. What should I be doing other than voting and working for causes I believe in. I’m not in an oppressed group unless you consider the entirety of the American public not part of the oligarchy to be such a group.

So what actual actions do you advocate for ordinary citizens to take?
bashinator··on Run a macOS VM on Apple Silicon from a double-click with Vimy
Any example use-cases?
bashinator··on Science Fiction vs. Science Fantasy
IMO you can have fictional science without going into the fantasy realm, simply by keeping it consistent with our current understanding of the Universe. Alistair Reynolds has written some truly epic space opera that completely omits FTL travel, much to the benefit of the story.
bashinator··on Ask HN: Is anyone using PyPy for real work?
What distro did you move to? IME debian as a base image for python app containers is also kind of a pain.

bashinator··on 1Password 8 has been formatting dates incorrectly for over a year
Bad example; 01/01 is unambiguously Jan 1 no matter how you read it.

bashinator··on The world’s empty office buildings have become a debt time bomb
Curious and just brainstorming a possibility here; is it possible for a city to rezone an existing property? Say a building that's unoccupied for N years triggers an automatic zoning review.
bashinator··on Show HN: I created Units Converter that contains 5000 units across 78 categories

bashinator··on The world’s empty office buildings have become a debt time bomb
Sounds like a regulatory failure; an unoccupied building shouldn't be able to retain book value.
bashinator··on Show HN: I created Units Converter that contains 5000 units across 78 categories
I couldn't find a way of converting from US teaspoons to cubic light-seconds, which is my favorite demo of the GNU utility. Also, do you have a way of adding a time dimension to the conversions? E.g from kibibytes per day to megabits per second?

What's the reason to use this over GNU Units?

bashinator··on Ask HN: What tools would make your Kubernetes development experience better?
Something that would facilitate load testing of microservice containers for optimizing the resource requests and limits.
bashinator··on Black holes might be defects in spacetime
I guess that depends on how much of a Platonist you are :-D
bashinator··on U.S. Marshals Spied on Abortion Protesters Using Dataminr
Sufficient quantitative change in capability causes a qualitative difference to outcomes.
bashinator··on Show HN: Killport – CLI tool to kill processes running on a specified port
I'd say it's a toss-up whether the stackoverflow/chatgpt query is slower than remembering the name of the alternate tool.

As a sysadmin, `lsof` is part of my standard toolkit; I wouldn't be able to do my job if I had to look stuff like that up on Stackoverflow every time.

You don't even really need technical means if you have sufficient financial resources, cf. Thiel v. Gawker.
bashinator··on DevOps uses a capability model, not a maturity model
Eh, I see devops as automated systems administration. Knowing how to be a good by-hand sysadmin is an enormous advantage in knowing how to automate things.
bashinator··on A DNA ‘parasite’ may have fragmented our genes
Nope, at best the filesystem is an analogy. Just like the stretchy rubber mat isn't a perfect description of spacetime.
bashinator··on 'Ultramassive' black hole discovered – bigger than the majority of galaxies
The Great Attractor is likely a cluster of galaxies with lots and lots of SMBHs.
bashinator··on I broke a wine glass with my voice (2018) [video]
Nothing about that is going to make the fundamental pitch of a sound you hear seem like a different frequency than it is. It will affect your perception of the complex overtones as you say, but matching the fundamental frequency you're singing with the resonant frequency of the glass does not involve complex overtones.
bashinator··on I broke a wine glass with my voice (2018) [video]
I'm going to go with 0%, given that the fundamental pitch of a sound is unaffected by material interference. I suppose exceptionally high-pitched tones above several thousand hertz might be affected, but nothing within the range of a human voice.
bashinator··on Mozilla removes Bypass Paywalls Clean extension from its add-ons repository
The New York Times makes considerably more money from subscription services than from advertising. That's a recent (last ten-fifteen years) pivot.
bashinator··on Hyperscale in your Homelab: The Compute Blade arrives
There's no backplane - all power and communication goes through a front-facing ethernet port. Kind of defeats the purpose of a blade form factor IMO.
bashinator··on Can self-replicating species flourish in the interior of a star? (2020) [pdf]
Just finished rereading that for the first time in ages. I don’t agree with a lot of its opinion on consciousness, but still great read. I was surprised at how in line with Dark Forest theory it is.
bashinator··on Elon: Let Me Help You Speed Run the Content Moderation Learning Curve
My parents have a vintage carpet with some eastern (counterclockwise) swastikas on it. That said, the context around your comment is completely apparent and the downvote are troubling to say the least. I hope it's just unhelpful pedantry rather than pedantry as a cover for bigotry.
