bashwizard··on Teens don't have a clue about IT? (2016)
That also reminds me of when I regularly used to visit our local library after school (junior in high school at that time) which had these job terminals (win95 boxes connected to the internet through a fiber connection) for people to use when looking for jobs.

Apparently they disabled basically all keystrokes while the application ran so we could only use a trackball to navigate the job board web site and print.

I never figured out how to just enable keystrokes again so I just unplugged the power cord, booted up in safe mode and edited autoexec.bat and uncommented the line for the application to autorun on windows boot up and rebooted. Free fiber internet and a lot of IRC for weeks to come!

However one of the librarians came up to me one day and asked "aren't you a little too young to be looking for a job?" and I was just joking and replied "yeah well, it's rough times you know". She looked concern and then looked at the screen and said something like "What's your name? I don't think you're allowed to do that... I'm going to have to tell you to get up and leave now".

I was indefinitely banned from using the computers and job terminals.

I remember my dad being fed up with me asking "hey dad, can I play Woffenstone?" (yes, I pronounced it like that since I was a 11 year old kid from sweden back then) so he gave me the DOS 5.0 manual and said "here you go kiddo, you can play as much as you want when you've learned how to start the game by yourself).

That's where it all started for me and I was always on the computer whenever I could until my dad got fed up with me installing games and uninstalling his stuff so he password locked it in the BIOS.

So I had to figure out how to bypass the BIOS password which I eventually did by just guessing the password. Now I could play games and mess around on the computer whenever he wasn't at home but I had to hide all my games so that he didn't realize that I was using the computer whenever he wasn't at home. Eventually he did realize that so he changed the password and uninstalled all my games so once again I had to guess the password and this time I put my own BIOS password on it and all hell broke loose.

And that's where the hacker mentality started and sooner than later my dad bought a new computer and gave the old one to me.

Good times.

bashwizard··on Ask HN: What interesting problems are you working on?
My lack of sleep.
bashwizard··on Mozilla Wants Young People to Consider ‘Ethical Issues’ Before Taking Tech Jobs
Sounds like weak excuses.

If you are in your mid 30's and you are an established and experienced person in your field of work, finding a new job should be the least of your problems. If you truly cared about the ethics of your work, you would have left your current job already.

When was the last time you had an interview with another employer? When was the last time you sent out resumes? When was the last time you networked with people from other companies that you find interesting? When was the last time you reached out to someone at company X for a cup of coffee? Have you considered starting your own business?

You do not remember or you have not done it at all since you started at your current job? Well in that case, there is your problem. You might think that you actually care about ethics but your efforts of trying to find somewhere else to work says otherwise.

I get it. You have probably convinced yourself that you are not doing anything wrong or unethical so you should not feel bad about it. Besides, the job probably pays well and it keeps you and your family fed and gives your family a roof over your heads and that is the most important thing afterall.

That is fine and all but it is still a weak excuse if you truly cared about ethics in your work. Most people do not care if the paycheck is good enough.

bashwizard··on Mozilla Wants Young People to Consider ‘Ethical Issues’ Before Taking Tech Jobs
Ah, I remember being young once. It's interesting how much one's priorities and choices in life changes when you grow up. As a grown up most people will shift to:

1) Quality of life 2) How fun/interesting the job is 3) Ethical issues 4) Money 5) Moneyeh!

bashwizard··on How do you spell boscodictiasaur? how we correct spelling and complete queries
Mboscodictiasaur obviously.
bashwizard··on Doctors are turning to YouTube to fill in gaps in their training
I had an anaphylactic shock a few years ago and started googling the symptoms (no, I didn't have cancer after all) and ended up realizing very quickly that I should probably go to the ER and get some antihistamine, so I did. The day after I booked a meeting with a doctor and while sitting there talking about my symptoms and reasons for getting the anaphylactic shock the doctor was on google and even the same web site I was looking at the day before.

So I told him "I already know that because you're basically just reciting the very same web site I was looking at yesterday before going to the ER but I felt that I should see an actually doctor about it. So do you have any clue what could have caused the shock or should I just pay close attention to what I eat, drink etc just like it says on that web site and hope for the best that I find the food that I'm allergic to?"

He had no clue. Thank god for free healthcare (oh well, tax paid universal healthcare) in Sweden.

bashwizard··on Ask HN: Burning Out
I'd even go as far as telling the founders "I expect you to fix this". If they don't - fuck it and quit.

It's that easy.

bashwizard··on Ableton Connection Kit (2016)
And here I'm trying to scale down on tracks and my last song I made had 6 tracks. Usually have about 50 tracks on average.

It's amazing how limitation can help creativity.

bashwizard··on I chose Facebook over Uber on 1/18/2019, which grossed me $92k.
Imagine working for Facebook in 2019 without feeling bad about it.
bashwizard··on Blizzard Postpones World of Warcraft 15th Anniversary Event in Taiwan
Being critical of Blizzard because of the HK shitshow while still having an active Blizzard account and playing their games makes no sense whatsoever to me.

Sounds like hypocrisy to me.

bashwizard··on Superior IQs associated with mental and physical disorders, research suggests
I'm clearly retarded since I'm happy all the time and I have no physical disorder!
bashwizard··on Show HN: I made a jobs board for developers without degrees
I'm on the opposite side.

If anyone asks me if they should go to school, do a bootcamp or learn by yourself I always tell them that "don't take my word for it but I'd personally never go to school to learn and get job as a programmer if that's what you want". Seeing as I've "made it" so to speak coming from a another field, without any kind of degree whatsoever, with no prior work experience in IT, I personally don't really see the value of going to school unless you really want that experience or if you're the type of person who needs a structured way of learning.

My career path is also strange to most people since I started out in sales and marketing, then went into finance as a glorified salesman and eventually got fed up with sales hussle and learned web development on the side. So from that I decided to learn how to code and web development to actually landing a job as a web developer took roughly two years.

I believe that with my soft skills from sales and finance and a decent portfolio made the decision to hire my over let's say someone straight out of college with no other credentials a no brainer.

Sure, I run into those "blind spots" from time to time but so far everyone I've ever talked to who has been in tech and specifically in development positions says the same thing, they all have the imposter syndrome and it won't go away.

bashwizard··on I Quit Social Media for a Year
Last photo I took was over a year ago. It was of my brothers dog licking its balls.
bashwizard··on I Quit Social Media for a Year
+5 years here and still not missing anything about social media whatsoever.
bashwizard··on Apple Music Web Client
Well personally I'd rather have all the music I'll ever need right here with basically a few taps on my phone for a very small cost every month instead of having to buy and download every album/song I want (would be extremely expensive in my case), back them up in the cloud, sync them with all my devices etc.

This comes from someone with a collection of roughly 1500 12" vinlys, meaning from someone who actually owns his music.

bashwizard··on Apple Music Web Client
Especially on the phone where most people use Spotify. Oh wait...
bashwizard··on Ask HN: What is the best way into a cybersecurity career in 2019?
Don't waste your time and money on CompTIA certs or CISSP. They're basically worthless when it comes to pentesting.

Pentesting is learned by doing. Get your hands dirty and start learning basic methodologies by using Hack The Box, Virtual Hacking Lab or Vulnhub VM's. When you feel that you're getting a bit comfortable rooting boxes, sign up for the PWK and go for the OSCP. This is your ticket into pentesting if you're like me with no work experience whatsoever in IT.

I came from +10 years in finance and landed my first job as a junior pentester two months after I passed the OSCP.

bashwizard··on Ask HN: What still sucks about remote work?
Having to go to the yearly meet ups and pretend to enjoy it.
bashwizard··on Ask HN: Affordable, online university for getting a degree to quit programming?
Since you already know how to build software, why not learn how to break them?

Go into infosec and make bank. Less tedious than coding and better pay in my experience.

bashwizard··on Paternity Leave Was Crucial After the Birth of My Child
Also as a Swede, I could never see myself raising kids in a country like the US. It's seems to be horrible in every day possible compared to here.

bashwizard··on Facebook Hit by Apple’s Crackdown on Messaging Feature

The mainstream media in general have been overvalualing themselves for the past decades.

Siri is probably pissed as fuck. I'd sleep with one eye open if I were you.
bashwizard··on How I finally won my name from domain resellers after nine years of waiting
I was in a similiar situation where I have the same name, spelling and all as a very famous person in my country. So this person had the .com domain and I waited 7 years for it to be dropped and eventually the person switched to our country's domain instead.
bashwizard··on Activision Blizzard has moved billions of dollars of profit into tax havens

bashwizard··on Learning Synths
I don't know about that.

I've sold off an Elektron Analog Four, Elektron Analog Rytm, Elektron Octatrack and an Access Virus Ti 2 less than a year ago and started working exclusivley in the box and using two ableton push 2 as midi controllers and I honestly do not miss my hardware at all.

Sure I lose out on some of that analog warmth but I've come pretty close by emulating it with various VSTs.
