bencoder··on Air travel is going to be very bad, for a very long time
I feel like there's a huge amount of delayed demand. A lot of people I know are pretty desperate to travel as soon as it's safe to do so (without quarantine after each leg).

I don't think demand will take such a huge hit. It just depends on whether the airline industry can ramp up supply again quickly or if it will take a long time.

But I could just be in a bubble of people who still have jobs and I suppose that might all change as the true economic effects settle in

bencoder··on I Sing the Airplane Electric
That's a cool idea. Though I see no need to make it VTOL. A simple tug plane, like a glider tug but for passenger aircraft. Really nice thought!
bencoder··on Ask HN: Is UK government insane or genius?
We are about 2 weeks behind Italy in death rate, which is the only measure that can be reliably compared between countries, due to differences in test rates and criteria to be tested.

Is 2 weeks "grace period" before implementing a lockdown and starting the heavy measures worth it in the long run? I don't think so.

The true inflation rate is probably a lot higher than CPI which is what most calculators use. Somewhere between 7-13% [0] (for example)

bencoder··on The BBC’s attempt to build a Netflix-style service was snuffed by regulation
I work with quite a few ex-BBC developers. It seems to be more of a labor of love. They universally have said that it's poorly paid, relatively.
bencoder··on Delphi's 25th Birthday
They used to give it away. I learnt to program from a free magazine cover-disk Delphi, and its excellent help system.
bencoder··on MacBook Pro 16 Has a Fan Problem
I've always had problems with external displays on macbooks. Particularly when using 2, regardless of hdmi or TB, but even a single display sometimes refuses to work without repeatedly unplugging and retrying. Never explicitly tried leaving for 20 seconds though, I'll try that next time
bencoder··on The 100 Year Starship
Yep, I would fork myself.

Merging and deconflicting if you want to reunite forks could be a fun problem to solve in the future

bencoder··on Boeing 777X’s fuselage split dramatically during September stress test
100% of its expected actual failure point, based on its design.

The plane is rated to 2/3rds of that (I think this is pretty standard in aviation) - the other "100%" - meaning it should never go above that in flight, and if it does it would require a very costly teardown/inspection.

bencoder··on Airline algorithms may be keeping you from sitting together
Ryanair claims to be the only European airline that doesn't overbook. Probably they can get away with this as changing your flight costs more than a ticket in the first place

Replying top level to say thank you all for the lovely comments on our game, 'xx142-b2.exe'. It was a huge surprise for us to win this!

We are slowly working on a dev blog/post-mortem for the game. Coming soon!

bencoder··on Valve is convicted in France for banning the resale of dematerialized games
Yeah I'm worried this will actually be worse for indie developers than the big gaming publishers who can afford always-on servers and subscription based models

I grew up on a southern coast where north was almost always with a slight upwards incline.

When I'm in a hilly place my automatic sense of direction gives me downhill = south, with about 25% accuracy

bencoder··on “I'm 10-15”: the secret CBP Facebook group
> There are many holocaust survivors and decedents who take extreme offense to this characterization.

I haven't personally come across this, only the opposite, but I suspect I'm in a bubble of sorts. Can you provide any verifiable sources for this?

bencoder··on Old systems can't cope with congested skies, vested interests block reform
Sometimes dangerous situations are averted by pilots realising the controller had made an error, like clearing a plane to cross a runway while another is taking off [0]

This kind of thing might be much harder to catch if clearances are given in text, or even impossible if they are routed only to the specific aircraft.

I don't see this phrase in the article, perhaps it was removed. But, regardless, it seems quite apt in this context: https://twitter.com/gaywonk/status/1134264395717103617

> I don't think it's a very trustworthy source of information

Use of a single, seemingly accurate, phrase seems like an odd reason to distrust a source

bencoder··on Launch HN: Prometheus (YC W19) – Remove CO2 from Air and Turn It into Gasoline
As the other reply pointed out, without a huge(like 5x) improvement in energy density (specific energy, actually) of batteries, this is physically impossible. Even with improvements, it would still be inefficient as batteries don't lose mass as they are used up - airliners can't even land with full fuel, they have to use it up, or dump it in an emergency situation.

Using a process like this would essentially make the fuel simply a much better battery for airplanes than our batteries today.

bencoder··on Storing files in the DB: story of an epic failure
You've skipped over quite a lot.

- learning about and understanding S3 in the first place.

- Billing and AWS account management (possibly requiring agreement/permission from others)

- maintaining credentials securely for your app to access S3.

- bug fixing (for e.g. it's easy to get the permissions wrong when you upload so that it's not visible)

Since you're already storing the URL in your dB, why not just store the binary data you have?

I don't think you're wrong about using something like S3 being a better solution, but it's not quite as simple as "issuing one command"

bencoder··on Explaining Sex Rate Changes
> Sure, a mate isn't _technically_ required to live a good life, but in our intensely individualistic society where the number of friends men have is dropping precipitously, relationships form a core of socialization for many men.

Perhaps this is the part where we need to change and improve? Rather than expecting the world or women to align to us.

bencoder··on Explaining Sex Rate Changes
In theory, certainly, mgtow seems fine. In practice, like your message right here, it's coming from a place of bitterness and resentment and a desire to "get back" at women. I prefer not to live like that, regardless of whether I'm currently seeking a partner, so the MGTOW label is inappropriate and any other label would likely get overloaded with similar bitter people.

As an aside, why do you refer to men as "men" and "guys", but women as "females"? The asymmetry there felt quite jarring to read.

bencoder··on Explaining Sex Rate Changes
> What bothers me about this conversation is that disastrous, society-shattering consequences are always mentioned if women keep choosing not to have sex with more men, but no one seems willing to suggest that men need to change the way they view sex, relationships and themselves.

I may have missed part of this conversation but I don't think there's a suggestion that women are doing something /wrong/ or that they need to be the ones to "fix" this problem. Although admittedly the framing kind of makes it look like this because it appears to be women's behaviour and attitudes that have changed over recent decades, rather than men's.

I agree with you; Since this is the way things are going, men need to find a way to change their expectations and entitlement and adapt. Unfortunately discussions around this often get over-run with misogyny and bitterness (MGTOW/red-pill) and it's remarkably hard to find safe spaces for men to talk openly about their issues while keeping out that subset of men. (shout out to /r/menslib)

bencoder··on Researchers trick Tesla autopilot into driving into opposing traffic
Judging by a lot of the discourse immediately following the most recent 737max incident, people were definitely blaming the pilots. Thankfully that's cleared up a bit now.

> This may be safe to a limited extent, but getting in debt for what you eat and drink and wear is to be avoided.
