bencoder··on Treat Medicines Like Netflix Treats Shows
Not sure if you're posting this as a disagreement with the suggested model, or agreeing.

From the link, it looks like it costs ~$10bn per successful drug, at the top end of that list.

Australia paid $750m for 5 years access.

Australia has ~1/10th the population of the United States. and ~1/3rd the population of the UK.

If just the UK, USA and Australia paid at that same rate (per capita) then they would cover that 10bn average development cost in 5 years.

Seems like it's a good suggestion

bencoder··on Ghidra, NSA's reverse-engineering tool
Why? If your real world adversaries can reverse binaries, why would you shackle a Red team from doing so?
bencoder··on Netflix Posted Biggest-Ever Profit in 2018 and Paid $0 in Income Taxes
Is there any difference?

They would have to lower their prices in order to keep the same price to the end user (to keep the same number of users) and therefore get less profit.

Is it because in the states you show the same price and local (state) sales taxes are added on top that makes it a tax to the consumer?

bencoder··on Oculus Quest
Quest uses inside-out tracking (cameras on the device to perform feature-detection and SLAM) to give full 6dof headset and controller tracking. The GearVR and other current stand alone headsets only track rotation via gyroscope, which is much more limited

bencoder··on What a Real Train System Looks Like (2009)
>France

Only Texas and Alaska are larger than France. I give you Alaska, due to the geography and low population, but Texas is just slightly larger and has half the population of France - not a massive difference.

I think it could be reasonably fair to compare countries to single states at least?

bencoder··on Montreal Moving Day: what happens when a whole city moves house at once
Also from the UK, and lived in Finland for a year. This surprised me massively when I moved considering the possibility of the door being blocked by snow on the outside.

You also get the great drying cupboards above sinks (and correspondingly, kitchen sinks without a window directly above them)

I believe op was just referring to the hn title which has a 'y' in place of the 'u'. The original URL does not use that spelling

bencoder··on Traders with Pockets Full of Crypto Quit Wall Street
> He saved just $180 per month?

It's Northern England. he likely wasn't paid that much.

bencoder··on We May First Find Aliens on Eyeball Planets
I don't think it made that claim (The HN title appears somewhat incorrect) - just that we are primarily detecting what are likely to be eyeball planets, so if life is out there on any of the planets we are detecting, then it'll most likely be an eyeball planet.

It's a bit circular and not really saying anything useful, but at least it's not claiming what the HN title (nor your criticism) is saying

bencoder··on How the super-rich are digging down in London
> salaries need to go up

+1

The UK still seems to have such a classist attitude. Anything 'unskilled' in London is barely above minimum wage, and some people would react in horror if they demanded any more than that.

See also: "How could train drivers strike when they earn 40k+. Nurses don't even earn that" - the problem is that nurses earn too little, not that the drivers earn too much. It sometimes feels like people here would rather pull everyone down to just above subsistence level, rather than supporting everyone doing better.

bencoder··on 'The Expanse' Canceled at Syfy
They do weekly releases for some shows (maybe most shows that they don't produce themselves).

I assumed it was some ridiculous commercial arrangment that meant they couldn't show it until after the season has finished in the states - but I have no idea

bencoder··on 'The Expanse' Canceled at Syfy
In the UK netflix have the rights, but for some reason it doesn't show up on the service until months after the season has finished on syfy.

Meaning most of my friends who have Netflix ended up pirating it.

I waited until season 2 showed up on netflix last year, but if it's being cancelled anyway I don't see much point in waiting this year.

In countries where the dot is used as the thousands separator, it is not a 'decimal point'. In fact, much of the world does NOT use . as a decimal separator:

I don't think those are pre-tax. They are just interest free loans.
