binary_slinger··on Surgeon General says loneliness is driving US into anxiety and pessimism
Community college noncredit courses.
binary_slinger··on Apple CEO Tim Cook Opens Up About AI Plans, Vision Pro Future, and More
My takeaway: A lot of words to say nothing.
binary_slinger··on The zoology and biochemistry of xenomorphs from the Alien franchise
The order of the movies as I understand is: Prometheus, Alien: Covenant, Alien, Alien Romulus.

The technology of the ship user interfaces in Prometheus and Alien: Covenant seems much higher tech than what is presented in Alien Romulus. Alien gets a pass because it was made in 1979.

So David makes the Xenomorphs and then David uses the colonist and human embryos for further experimentation? So are the events of Alien a trap by David?

binary_slinger··on Ask HN: How are you using LLMs?
Input: Full-text notes

Output: outline of slides for ppt, using pandoc

binary_slinger··on Kids are getting ruder, teachers say. And new research backs that up
I would encourage anyone in the U.S., who has the opportunity, to become a substitute teacher. In my area it requires a degree and background check. So you can observe first hand.
binary_slinger··on Americans see their savings vanish in Synapse fintech crisis
This was a high yield savings account. They allowed some withdrawals at any time. No minimum balance but I can’t remember for sure.
binary_slinger··on Don't Look Down on Print Debugging
The shortcoming is print cannot always inspect pointers/objects. Once the debugger hits the breakpoint the entire context can be inspected.
binary_slinger··on Show HN: Django Boot
IMO One thing that this gets right is naming the package that has settings.py "config". If you use "django-admin startproject <name>" it uses "<name>" for the config package which may not be a good name for a package that mostly will contain configuration.

Another feature might be a script to generate an app which includes a urls.py, and template directory, etc.

binary_slinger··on Ask HN: How else to live more minimally?
I think in tech circles there is this obsession with aesthetic of minimalism which I suspect is driven by nostalgia. It comes up all the time on HN, and the usual suspects are ditching smartphones and going back to paper.

Personally, I prefer "utilitarian" over "minimal". Everything around me serves a purpose, when it stops doing that its gone.

I still use a smartphone and gmail. I avoid paper and "uni-taskers".

The one thing I agree with is cutting out all news. I have not found news across any medium to provide any actionable benefits to my life.

One thing to consider is replacing massive social networks with close-connection (people from real life) and interest-based networks. There are well-funded, anonymous actors within these large platforms, driven by perverse incentives that are often counter to your well-being.

binary_slinger··on Americans see their savings vanish in Synapse fintech crisis
The linked website for Yotta is withyotta.com which looks like some sort of online gambling site? The slogan is "Play games. Win Big." Am I missing something? It doesn't look like something I'd trust to put any amount of money into.

Looking at archive.org for September 2023 [1] they claim an "average annual savings reward" of "~2.70%*". At a real major US bank, I was getting 4.65% in my savings account at this same time.

Reading the terms at the bottom of the page it says: "Please note that the approximate Average Annual Savings Reward of 2.70% is a statistical estimate based on the probabilities of matching numbers each night. The Annual Savings Reward will vary from member to member depending on one’s luck in the Daily Drawings and is subject to change in the future."

binary_slinger··on Microsoft's New PC Looks Just Like a Mac Mini but Serves a Whole New Purpose
Will Windows 365 support color managed workflows and chroma 4:4:4? Because RDP does not.
binary_slinger··on IMG_0416
This reminds me of something I've been thinking a lot about. which i think is big techs greatest failure: interoperability

I first thought of this when seeing someone take a picture of their computer screen. There is just so much friction in moving data.

I should be able to take anything off any screen and move the source material to any other screen on any device or cloud with a simple 1-click process. Including the devices of a friend or family member.

Microsoft forced OEM's to replace the right ctrl key with a copilot key. really it should have been an 'interoperability' key.

binary_slinger··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Some ideas I'd like to see implemented (in no particular order):

1. Eliminate anonymity by requiring real names and profile pictures attached to usernames. This humanizes users and encourages accountability, as attaching a real name can act as a natural filter for behavior.

2. Introduce a cost for downvoting to make it a more thoughtful action. This could involve a quota based on account age and karma, or my favorite option—having each downvote cost a bit of karma or an upvote on one of your own posts.

3. Discourage bot accounts by requiring a hard-to-obtain token, like a verified phone number, which is straightforward to implement and would reduce low-effort accounts.

4. Higher barrier to entry to join an online community. This doesn't parallel how communities work IRL. You need social credit to join a community.

binary_slinger··on Netflix Europe offices raided in tax fraud probe
Because governments need money to fund services. They would put a tax on making HN comments if they could get away with it.
binary_slinger··on Making the Python back end for my new webapp
Separation of concerns. Input data from web is not always going to match schema of DB.

> If you use WordPress for a living, I recommend strongly that you consider changing platforms.

I initially thought this as well. There are alternatives but unless those alternatives are 100% API compatible with WP plugins and themes nothing is going to happen. Wordpress users and devs will continue to use WP. business as usual. Matt knows this.

binary_slinger··on Cognizant found guilty of discriminating against non-Indian employees
I was at one point located in Plano, Texas which has a large Indian IT community. When my job search started around eight years ago fresh out of school with a masters degree I was passed up by every IT firm in the area. This is a hard and controversial topic to discuss, and I apologize if anyone find my words here offensive. But the pattern I recognized was if the interviewers were Indian I would not be passing the interview. I have no proof of this. But my Indian peers at my school who applied to the same firms with similar credentials and skill level had little trouble.
binary_slinger··on Wordpress.org Login: "I am not affiliated with WP Engine in any way"
Is anyone working on a Wordpress clone? I've always hated the wordpress codebase and especially the react editor. I think a successful clone would be API equivalent so existing plugins can be used.
binary_slinger··on How to make Product give a shit about your architecture proposal
This is ancillary to the discussion but that was a scummy plumbing company. When I became an homeowner I read up on codes and took a few classes on plumbing, electrical and HVAC. A lot of these companies take advantage of the homeowner not being knowledgeable in those areas. Sometimes these people that come over to your house are sales people and not actual tradespeople.
binary_slinger··on European govt air-gapped systems breached using custom malware
I’m a bit disappointed the mechanism to exfiltrate data is based on sharing the USB between an internet-connected and air gapped devices. It would have been cool if it used some other side channel like acoustic signals.
binary_slinger··on Microsoft Is Discontinuing HoloLens 2, with No Replacement
My company tried to integrate the HoloLens with our in-house CAD package. And it was extremely clunky. low FoV, bad colors. The Quest 3 is cheaper and the dev tooling is better.
binary_slinger··on Open source maintainers underpaid, swamped by security, and going gray
From my experience it’s about cost and efficiency. By cost I mean my cost to them for my time coding. Customers don’t factor in the hidden costs of open source.

I preferred developing minimal-dependency software but my customers demand fast good-enough results. The only way to deliver that is to glue together open source dependencies.

binary_slinger··on Londoners will soon see drones ferrying blood between hospitals
Both of you have me a good laugh. Love it!
binary_slinger··on Zen and the Art of Writer Decks (Using the Pomera DM250)
I stumbled upon the Pomera DM250 and the concept of “writer decks” by accident while going down a YouTube rabbit hole. There seems to be a huge community of "productivity YouTubers," where the implication is often that if you buy certain devices and adopt the task management process du jour, you’ll somehow become more productive.

While these devices do look cool, I find “unitasker” devices are overrated and overpriced.

And my biggest gripe with these devices including ones recommended in the comments is ergonomics. Neck and eye strain…

binary_slinger··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
I read that sentiment often. But I am able to switch between my 60 Hz iPhone 13 and 120 Hz iPad Pro without issue. iPad Pro switches from 120 Hz to 60 Hz when low power mode is activated. I notice the switch but I easily adjust and not think about it.
binary_slinger··on The 2034 Website (2019)
I'm surprised this hasn't been solved by either in-house or off the shelf course management solution maintained by the institution.
