binarymax··on Zvec: A lightweight, fast, in-process vector database
I haven’t looked at this repo, but new techniques taking advantage of nvme and io_uring make on disk performance really good without needing to keep everything in RAM.
binarymax··on National Guard activated in Minneapolis after Border Patrol agent kills man
The intention is disruption, they don’t care about control. They are disrupting lives in several cities.
binarymax··on National Guard activated in Minneapolis after Border Patrol agent kills man
If you want to hold on to the house and senate you don’t need to maintain control - you just need to disrupt the elections of 10 to 20 key cities, and they have the numbers for that.
binarymax··on National Guard activated in Minneapolis after Border Patrol agent kills man
It’s fair to say that the federal government is no longer a trusted source of information on this matter.
binarymax··on National Guard activated in Minneapolis after Border Patrol agent kills man
I’m not sure how many people realize this, but ICE is the buildup for trump to hold power by deploying soldiers ahead of time. I expect we will see them deployed at the election sites of democratic cities in November.
binarymax··on Ask HN: Share your personal website

binarymax··on Cowork: Claude Code for the rest of your work
Most of these files are binary and are not a good fit for git’s graph based diff tracker…you’re basically ending up with a new full sized binary for every file version. It works from a version perspective, but is very inefficient and not what git was built for.
binarymax··on How Google got its groove back and edged ahead of OpenAI
It most certainly is not.
binarymax··on ChatGPT Health
Great write up. I'd even double down on this statement: "You can opt in to chat history privacy". This is really "You can opt in to chat history privacy on a chat-by-chat basis, and there is no way to set a default opt-out for new chats".
binarymax··on Eat Real Food
Staunch anti-vaccine, and he's tearing apart the CDC wit regards to the same.
binarymax··on How Google got its groove back and edged ahead of OpenAI
This reads like a paid post from Google.
binarymax··on 2026: The Year of Java in the Terminal?
The question mark at the end is an easy out for us to claim Betteridge’s law.
binarymax··on Janet Jackson had the power to crash laptop computers (2022)
But the materials on the CD eventually break down, sometimes as soon as within 5 years. So you can look into MDisc, which purports 100 years…but only in theory since the tests are just approximations of what would actually happen.
binarymax··on SSE sucks for transporting LLM tokens
Websockets are great for this. Initialize the completion with an id, and store the token stream while emitting as a websocket event. Keep the id in state somewhere on the client (url works great with pushstate). If the client disconnects then just replay the event stream for the id.
binarymax··on Google de-indexed Bear Blog and I don't know why
Makes sense. Hadn't heard of that platform before but looks really nice.
binarymax··on Google de-indexed Bear Blog and I don't know why
Same. I still don’t know why the word “Bear” was used in the title.
binarymax··on Getting a Gemini API key is an exercise in frustration
The same billing experience applies to the Google programmable search api. Easy to get a key, but a Byzantine maze to pay for more than the free version.
binarymax··on Microsoft increases Office 365 and Microsoft 365 license prices
The only main feature post 98 is that the file format is zipped xml documents. Before that it was proprietary binaries.
binarymax··on OpenAI declares 'code red' as Google catches up in AI race
Benchmaxxing galore by lots of teams in this space.
binarymax··on Ask HN: What is the purpose of all these AI spam comments?
My theory is that these bots are tests to eventually have a decent config to gain enough age&karma to have some voting clout. Then the upvotes are used to boost the attackers stories and avoid voting rings.
binarymax··on Ask HN: What is the purpose of all these AI spam comments?
How does voting work with shadowbanned accounts? Selling upvotes on stories is the real game, nobody cares about comments.
binarymax··on The Bughouse Effect
I played bughouse in the early 90s. It’s far better than chess. My teammate and I were really good. We would beat chess grandmasters because the game is so different. At the time we had bughouse Elos of something like 2300, which don’t make any sense because it was such a niche game.

When you get good at bughouse, you make your own openings and you each know who’s playing what. The openings are synchronized and you can plan out until a certain move where you sacrifice a bishop or knight on the opponents king bishop pawn, exposing them, then your teammate just trades as much material as possible.

We also got really really good at the clocks. We’d just have a winning position and sit on the clock on the other board in a zugzwang-like time force.

That game, and kriegspiel, occupied my time in much of the 90s. If you like chess, and can play in person, try bughouse. It’s the best.

Why. Why are they doing this. It’s the same with Netflix. I don’t understand. What is the metric that goes up when they show a couple giant videos.
binarymax··on Court filings allege Meta downplayed risks to children and misled the public
Has that ever really worked? And considering meta has billions of users on not just Facebook, but also WhatsApp and instagram, I’m skeptical. I know people who hate meta, but can’t shake instagram.
binarymax··on Court filings allege Meta downplayed risks to children and misled the public
My opinion is that if corporate personhood is OK, then the corporation should face the same consequences as people do when they break the law. So facilitation of human trafficking should go to criminal court.
binarymax··on Court filings allege Meta downplayed risks to children and misled the public
Look, most of us here know that meta is a terrible company that has done terrible things. But what is actually being done about it? So far just some token fines and petty wrist slaps. What’s really the plan here? Because they’re not going to stop.
binarymax··on Cloudflare outage on November 18, 2025 post mortem
28M 500 errors/sec for several hours from a single provider. Must be a new record.

No other time in history has one single company been responsible for so much commerce and traffic. I wonder what some outage analogs to the pre-internet ages would be.
