bitvoid··on Mozilla says Apple's new browser rules are 'as painful as possible' for Firefox
Unlike the US, the EU cares more about the intention of the law than the letter of the law, from what I understand.
bitvoid··on Coming to Grips with Apple's Seemingly Unshakable Sense of Entitlement
I get the argument, but it falls flat for me. Consoles are basically appliances with a primarily singular purpose: video games. Smart phones, in my opinion, are general purpose computers that should be treated differently. Games are a small subset of what people use smart phones for.
bitvoid··on DARPA Moves Forward on X-65: Plane with no moving control surfaces
You have passed the test. Welcome to the spectrum.
bitvoid··on A new blog for 2024
It's definitely looking better. I can now hop on board with the others in saying that it's a really nice touch.
bitvoid··on A new blog for 2024
I thought I was the only one considering the praise it's getting throughout the thread and others saying that they didn't even notice it until it was pointed out in the article. I had to reduce the opacity by at least half for it to not be so distracting.

Perhaps the noise doesn't "scale" on mobile as I'm also viewing it on an iPhone and/or is just more apparent in dark mode.

bitvoid··on Tesla blamed drivers for failures of parts it long knew were defective
I've driven 3 as rentals (2 Model 3s, 1 Model Y) and they all had issues. They all made a ton of noise on the highway (my 15 year old SUV makes less noise at higher speeds), cameras would randomly go completely out, screen would become unresponsive, etc.

Unrelated to reliability, I'm also not a fan of everything being controlled from a touchscreen. My wife wants one after driving a rental, but I think she too has fallen for the gimmicks.

bitvoid··on Apple to halt Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 sales in the US this week
Wrong patent.

bitvoid··on Gemini "duck" demo was not done in realtime or with voice
> The number of non-tech ppl I've heard directly reference ChatGPT now is absolutely shocking.

The problem is that a lot of those people will take ChatGPT output at face value. They are wholly unaware that of its inaccuracies or that it hallucinates. I've seen it too many times in the relatively short amount of time that ChatGPT has been around.

bitvoid··on Common Voice
This is an open dataset of voice samples to train models, so not really STT/TTS software.
bitvoid··on Chrome's next weapon in the War on Ad Blockers: Slower extension updates
That doesn't really state if that's a self-imposed limitation or limitation of Mv3.
bitvoid··on No new boss at NSA until it answers questions on buying location, browsing data
IIRC, FBI get a lot of their domestic surveillance data from the NSA.
bitvoid··on Salad Fingers and the dawn of ‘weird YouTube’
Also, H3H3's original videos before he started doing reaction/commentary stuff as well, which was more early YouTube than current.
bitvoid··on Booking.com hackers increase attacks on customers
Isn't that what the spend limit option is for?
bitvoid··on My favorite database shirts
I typically have really short hair, so I wear one with the hood on when it's chilly inside, but not so chilly that I want the heater on or want to wear a sweater.
bitvoid··on My favorite database shirts
The same distinction between a long sleeve t-shirt and a crewneck sweater. I don't know how they're made, but my layman distinction would be "thickness".
bitvoid··on GitHub is investigating an incident with Pull Requests, Issues and Webhooks
I'm sure making private repos free also dramatically increased the number of total repos to manage. I know personally that I went from having a couple of public repos to at least a dozen private repos for notes, configs, etc.
bitvoid··on My favorite database shirts
To be fair, it's not really a hoodie either as I feel that implies it's a sweater or has the thickness of one. It really is just a long sleeve shirt with a hood attached.
bitvoid··on Cicero: The first AI to play at a human level in Diplomacy (2022)
Doesn't that assume AI(s) would be compelled/motivated/etc. to produce their own successors instead of simply improving themselves.
bitvoid··on SEC charges Kraken for operating as an unregistered securities exchange
If the FDA didn't exist, how many more harmful drugs would there be? Would those harmful drugs that had approval retracted still be out there being prescribed?

Just because the FDA is not perfect does not mean that it's a net negative.

bitvoid··on OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO
From what I understand, the for-profit OpenAI is owned and governed by the non-profit OpenAI. The board of the latter are the ones who fired him.
bitvoid··on Privacy is priceless, but Signal is expensive
You still need to register with a phone number though. Until that's no longer a requirement, I'm personally not using Signal.
bitvoid··on YouTube may face criminal complaints in EU for using ad-block detection scripts
There's an extension called Enhancer for YouTube (and probably others) that allows you to automatically set the quality without needing to do it manually. If your default quality setting is higher than a video offers, it'll choose the highest available.

There's also other features like automatically expanding the video, converting Shorts to normal videos, automatically expanding the description, automatically hiding chat for live streams, etc.

bitvoid··on Asciinema: Record and share your terminal sessions, the simple way
But you can copy and paste from the recording. That's one of the main features presented on the linked homepage. I can even copy and paste on mobile.
bitvoid··on Using AsciiDoc and Asciidoctor for Blogging
I'm pretty sure Hugo supports asciidoc.
bitvoid··on O3DE
I thought Lumberyard was forked from CryEngine 3.6? Did they refork or rebase it from CryEngine 5?
bitvoid··on Tainting the CSAM client-side scanning database
It was in reply to:

> If push comes to shove they'll be fine and pressure to black box signal in the EU is unlikely to hold up if they can just move users to another app store.

bitvoid··on Contour: Modern and fast terminal emulator
I really like Windows Terminal too. The one issue I have is that I have Ubuntu as the default session and when I open the terminal from the start menu (i.e., hit command key, type "terminal", and hit enter), it opens but loses focus. The only way to remedy it is to disable WSLg (GUI support). It's a long standing bug and a weird one at that.
bitvoid··on Pulsars, not dark matter, explain the Milky Way’s antimatter
It basically means round-trip tests where the source of light and the detector are the same, and the light reflects back from a mirror. One-way would be having the source send the light to the detector directly, but the problem with testing that way comes down to synchronizing the clocks of the source and detector.

I don't know anything about this, I just found a Wikipedia page [1]

bitvoid··on Unity’s pricing is a symptom, not the cause of tougher times for the industry
Are you sure? As far as I'm aware, I'm able to install a game I own on multiple machines for all of these platforms. I figured that the game is tied to my account, not some hardware ID. Why would they need to make sure I'm not charged twice based on installing the game to a machine rather than just seeing if my account owns it? I have never been charged more than once for a game I own that I have installed on both my desktop and my laptop, even after replacing those machines.
bitvoid··on Unity’s pricing is a symptom, not the cause of tougher times for the industry
Unfortunately for them, it isn't.
