blissofbeing··on 100k+ page views a month for $5 with a self-hosted static site
These two don't play nice together. That is you can't use cloudflare as a CDN and netlify without netlify complaining to you about not being able to provision your ssl.
blissofbeing··on The Swedish phoneme notorious for having a dedicated IPA symbol, /ɧ/ (2016)
I'm more curious with this question

> "A better question, however, might be why aren’t other similar cases around the world treated in the same fashion…? "

It would seem you can't really divorce science from politics, ever.

blissofbeing··on Google whistleblower: the medical data of millions of Americans is at risk
The can't get ice cream one is a bit far fetched eh? I'm sure that no matter if they knew my health history they would still sell me some ice cream :)
blissofbeing··on Google whistleblower: the medical data of millions of Americans is at risk
So essentially the answer I'm hearing is that there is a fear of what other people will do with the information. Mostly around discrimination and shame.
blissofbeing··on Google whistleblower: the medical data of millions of Americans is at risk
Maybe if it was public these diseases wouldn't be so stigmatized. It might have a social impact now, but I see that as the issue.
blissofbeing··on Google whistleblower: the medical data of millions of Americans is at risk
What is the risk of exposing our health data? To me it is not so obvious, other than maybe embarrassment? Is it like how in our culture we don't like to talk about how much money we make? Why are all these things supposed to be secret in the first place?
blissofbeing··on ‘Go Back to California’: Wave of Newcomers Fuels Backlash in Boise
We are all more connected than we realize. Issues in California are issues for everyone, this protectionist attitude gets us nowhere in today's world where it's easier than ever to live anywhere.
blissofbeing··on Ghost 3.0
The docs page linked in the FAQ is returning a 404: https://ghost.org/docs/members/
blissofbeing··on Ask HN: What do you do on an Android phone that cannot be done on an iPhone?
I am not affiliated with these apps, I just use them all the time and are apps you probably won't be able to find apps like these on the app store.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.clownface....

- map the sides of your phone to actions like slide volume and brightness.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.synapse.al...

- batch your notifications to specific times of the day.

All in all I find android apps just offer more functionality for the power user.

blissofbeing··on The Dark Side of Dark Mode
I used to prefer dark mode because it reduced all white light. But then I realized that I don't have an issue with white light, just the blue light spectrum in white light.

I have switched to light mode but with a heavy blue light filter and find it much better than dark mode on my eyes.

blissofbeing··on The Dark Side of Dark Mode
Did you read the article? It actually points to numerous scientific studies that show that light mode is better.

And by better I mean (from the article): "Light Mode provides better performance in focusing of the eye, identifying letters, transcribing letters, text comprehension, reading speed, and proofreading performance, and at least some older studies suggest that using a positive polarity display results in less visual fatigue and increased visual comfort."

blissofbeing··on Flotato – Break Free from the Browser
I like this. It's using webkit, and it's nice to have dedicated cmd-tab apps with dock notifications for messenger.
blissofbeing··on Cost of serving billions of images per month
Now I'm interested to see what their business model is. It seems like they have a lot of money to throw at services instead of developing it themselves, so I'm interested in their ROI or opportunity cost decisions now.
blissofbeing··on Rich countries tend to have a bigger middle-class, except the USA
If the money you make is tied the hours you work, probably not. But once you figure out ways to divorce the two you'll probably feel more like you are "killing it."
blissofbeing··on Rich countries tend to have a bigger middle-class, except the USA
Is there a full dataset somewhere? I would like to see where NZ is on this.
blissofbeing··on 339 Bytes of Responsive CSS
fork of the fork JSFiddle: https://jsfiddle.net/abmnyjdc/1/
blissofbeing··on Alacritty Terminal Version 0.3.0 Release
Actually, it looks like the devs are pretty open to including tabs (in macOS at least). https://github.com/jwilm/alacritty/issues/1544
blissofbeing··on How to build your own CDN with Kubernetes
This looks like creating a problem to solve rather than actually solving the problem at hand.
blissofbeing··on Two years of Elixir at The Outline
I would like to use Elixir more at work, I'm hoping that we'll be able to use it for some new projects. I love the language and the community.
blissofbeing··on Ask HN: Why were so many security details at this week's S.F. Twilio convention?
Because it's SF?
blissofbeing··on Dev.to is now open source
I was very surprised to open the gemfile and see a gem I wrote "s3_direct_upload" being used. Especially considering there is native support to upload files directly to s3 in rails 5.

Then I looked at the repo and realized, wow people are still using this gem, maybe I should maintain it.

blissofbeing··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2017)
NSFW unless you work there, then its SFW?
blissofbeing··on The Life, Death, and Legacy of iPhone Jailbreaking
Jailbreaking iOS devices might be dead but rooting android based devices is thriving.

With a jailbreak / root you can get around carrier restrictions on tethering, which in some areas without high speed wired internet options this is very important.

blissofbeing··on Major changes to Mandrill, must be tied to a MailChimp account
This really doesn't make sense. Why not just implement Mandrill into Mailchimp like they wanted and keep Mandrill around also? I don't see it as an either or thing.

This move was probably more about the bottom line than anything else.

blissofbeing··on Bootstrapping in Saigon
Saigon is a bustling city in a developing country. Don't expect western style living.
blissofbeing··on [dead]
Its hard for me to consider moving to India given the current environmental degradation there, for example[1] and HN discussion[2]

blissofbeing··on Scaling Secret: Real-Time Chat
So basically they used pusher to scale to around 50,000 concurrent users.
blissofbeing··on I turned caps lock on for a week
Caps lock for me is delete.

Think about how often you hit delete then think about how far away it is, then remap it to capslocks and enjoy.

If your on a Mac use this awesome utility to easily remap your capslock to the delete key: https://pqrs.org/osx/karabiner/seil.html.en

blissofbeing··on Poll: How many HN readers are believers?
Smart people may have been, and may be religious, but I don't agree that _many_ smart people are religious, at least not dogmatically religious. In my experience _many_ smart people are not religious. As is the OPs experience. You can always find outliers.

And I wouldn't call Einstein religious, at least not the late Einstein. Nor would I call having "humility with respect to the question of human existence" being religious.

Basic inquiry is a trait of smart people. Dogmatic religion requires, maybe even demands for its own existence, that most enquiry (i.e. the "why" questions) be put aside on faith alone. Smart people just tend to not accept the "faith" argument. Smart people tend toward experimentation and logic, over blind faith.

blissofbeing··on Poll: How many HN readers are believers?
I suspect that is because tech people tend to be smart.
