boyce··on Ask HN: What are you doing for your mental health?
I see a really great and not too expensive psychiatrist who has worked wonders for me and takes a very holistic approach - he'll often suggest something for one problem but actually it solves two others and I realise years later. Anyone in the Hants area I can wholeheartedly recommend Lars Hansen.

I take the bare minimum medication such that I don't get side affects and just about notice my cycling is over a reduced range.

I drink very little nowadays and as a rule stick to a particular niche beer style for a period and only drink beer I haven't already tried. Having managed several craft beer bars and worked with most local breweries it's rare a pub has something I don't know. I don't take drugs outside of prescriptions and haven't for a few years.

I have one coffee a day, first thing, and again stick to a particular origin for a long period so I don't find myself grabbing a starbucks for the sake of it. I go to bed at a sensible time and never let myself lie in.

I don't eat much sugar, or carbohydrates generally. I don't eat beef or lamb either. I try and include something like spinach or kale into every meal. I don't eat takeaway food very often any more, last year it was twice.

I try and get outside for an extended period each day. I sit down as little as possible. We have one television and it mainly stays off apart from the odd bit of kids TV or Formula 1.

When I don't feel like doing something I need to, I try and challenge that and prove to myself I can do it and that my fears were unfounded. If I'm worrying about something I ask myself what am I really afraid of and then I can reassure myself that if that situation occurred I could handle it.

I volunteer a day a week helping young people with mental health problems challenge themselves.

I keep extensive notes on ideas I have, things I need to do, etc, so that I'm not trying to remember things needlessly. My wife and I have strictly delegated tasks like monthly budgeting, meal planning. If I'm struggling with something I know to communicate that.

When I need to take a break mentally I'll put on an album I'm familiar with and play along with it or write down some recipe ideas or similar. My garage is where I can go to be alone when I need that.

Probably there's a hundred more things that aren't springing to mind right now

boyce··on UK minister to tell universities to stop 'no-platforming' speakers
Student unions aren't dictatorships

They're a great environment in which young folks can have these debates with minimal consequences

boyce··on UK minister to tell universities to stop 'no-platforming' speakers
People have differing objectives when they go to university
boyce··on UK minister to tell universities to stop 'no-platforming' speakers
When I was a student I was no fan of "no platform" and it was an important factor in the No to NUS campaign I led back then. BUT...

Universities and student unions foremost reponsibility is to the safety of the students and yes that can mean stopping the odd event.

Also unions are generally mandated to uphold an atmosphere of inclusion and tolerance and that certainly means going further than the legal minimum in rejecting hate.

boyce··on Apple is close to acquiring Shazam, sources say
I know a guy in a local band here in Portsmouth, England, and they had a song picked for a supermarket playlist in I think Brazil, ended up charting there and being flown out for a few shows. Another guy who was playing on the ferry to Spain for a living and had a hit in Korea through similar circumstances. This sort of thing can really make a career.

Sensible heads weren't predicting an instant crash but greatly reduced growth and loss of value of the currency.

If you're cherry picking daft predictions there were plenty on each side.

boyce··on Bitcoin Bubble Makes Dot-Com Look Rational
I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. That a bubble has to be bigger before it can be called such? That you feel there's some fundamental value there to provide a floor price in the event of a crash? Genuine question
boyce··on Bitcoin Bubble Makes Dot-Com Look Rational
I think this is clearly not equivalent

At the moment it feels like a parent warning a child - at some point you have to decide to step back and let them learn the painful lesson for themselves

boyce··on Asking members to support journalism, The Guardian raises more revenue than ads
Pretty standard Guardian opinion piece, well in line with prevailing centre-left views, moderate feminists etc. No idea what is atrocious or poor quality about it

That isn't to say the Graun doesn't do things badly some time but this sort of article is precisely their raison d'etre

Staines is a piece of work but very well connected. Conspiracies, yes, but not conspiracy theories. He's as establishment as a libertarian blogger could hope to be in the UK.

boyce··on California Could Legalize Magic Mushrooms in 2018
I remember when they were banned in the UK - wanted to try them that weekend (had tickets for Black Sabbath) but they couldn't be had at any money the last few days

Seems weird that some drugs and some countries are moving away from legalisation but it's got to be evidence based imo

boyce··on America’s ‘Retail Apocalypse’ Is Really Just Beginning
Retail, where it still works, is about curation. I've been working recently with a specialised retailer and his stocking of a particular product is effectively a seal of quality.

The few shops I go to, I don't go there because they have every possible product, I go there because I know their purchasing reflects the opinions and qualities that I also value.

boyce··on Wikipedia’s Science Articles Are Elitist
It's really a question of who they intend it to be a resource for: the occasional curious layman, the amateur enthusiast, the undergrad, the actual scientist who is probably using it just to check they remembered the equations right.

The present article looks useful to all but the first category. Rewriting it for them would make it less useful for the rest.

I'd argue it's most useful as it is.
