Capitalism creates structural pressures which marginalize those without capital. It's a rigged game. One in which the player is told with hard work and wit that the player can become just like them-oppress others in exchange for a diminishing utility for increase in capital that can never be satiated.

brilliantcode··on Business cancels Yelp advertising contract, negative reviews start pouring in
Unfuckingbelievable.

If you google Eric Sperber, you can see that youtube show up in first page results.

I wonder how in hell is Yelp not giving a fuck? They even tried to take down the video but that guy was smart enough to upload a backup on S3 and many ppl have copies ready to be distributed.

At least Yelp knows about streisand law....

brilliantcode··on Business cancels Yelp advertising contract, negative reviews start pouring in
It perplexes me that they can get away with this. This is shaking down mom & pops businesses.
brilliantcode··on Nomx Passes Security Tests After Blogger Claims to Have Penetrated Nomx
This seems like a bad PR move. Now there's serious questions about the validity of the claims.

I've never heard of Nomx but this really should not be how you should introduce your product by claiming it's safe and you should just believe the website.

brilliantcode··on Just Say No
The laws, ethics, morality were all constructed by people who disregarded them and was able to build massive fortunes and influence before they invented the gun with force.

Except we don't have kings anymore but hundreds of thousands f corporations writing the rules to benefit their shareholders who collectively act as the brain.

brilliantcode··on Torcoin: Crypto's latest scam
It never ceases to amaze me how gullible people are with all these questionable "crypto" coins being traded on Poloniex.

Price is manipulated but because these don't fall under SEC's turf it's being looked the other way...

but if anything should keep the Poloniex and Ethereum guys awake is that the SEC has traditionally retroactively applied a law however far back they need to.

This means that you should start treating cryptocoins under the assumption that the SEC would retroactively view it as equity therefore violation of trading laws.

brilliantcode··on A Hedge Fund Manager Who’s Shorting America’s Malls
looks like the millionaires of HN don't like hearing this haha!
brilliantcode··on Why Criminals Target Patient Data
How is your friend taking the news? I can't imagine the level of sadness at the thought of your own biological birth mother giving you up like that. Freud says they go through their whole life trying to avoid abandonment.

I'd imagine the sadness easily turning into some sort of aimless wrath. It's like being told you've lived a lie to save birthgiver's face. Maybe that's what happened to Paul Le Roux when he found out he was not only adopted but that they didn't even bother giving it a name.

brilliantcode··on A Hedge Fund Manager Who’s Shorting America’s Malls
It seems like Luxury stores are on the rise and doing great but all these retail shops aimed at the general public in malls is struggling.

In my humble opinion, it's a sign of the increasing wealth transfer from the poor to the rich. The middle class is disappearing and it looks like they are taking the Mall away....they realized vast majority just window shop.

brilliantcode··on A Hedge Fund Manager Who’s Shorting America’s Malls
It's behind a paywall but take these public short position declaration with a grain of salt - it serves them and their financial positions when it gets media exposure.
brilliantcode··on Who Is Publishing NSA and CIA Secrets, and Why?
Putin, in case anyone had trouble with the article's implied message.
brilliantcode··on Hanging up my spurs
Fair enough. But this year is the perfect recipe. Trump, China, EU etc....

Read Antifragile book

brilliantcode··on Hanging up my spurs
So smart money is leaving startup/VC/SV...it'd be interesting to see who's been swimming naked all these years when the bubble bursts this Fall

edit: oooh, definitely a touchy subject around here ;)

I'm curious how why you need to initialize a local server? Does that run inside the browser?
brilliantcode··on Robinhood stock trading app confirms $110M raise at $1.3B valuation
Remember LendingClub which was a money lending business that touted it's machine learning KYC & AML process would automate the overhead but what happened was it just let a ton of people with non existent credit to grab money...that they will never pay back. Techcrunch, news, tv, they had it all.

I'm not saying Robinhood is bad or anything but the business model and the valuation built on top of it is very questionable.

It's almost like gravity does not exist anymore. It's all about making it across the IPO finish line and then it's like fuck what happens to everyone else because I've already got Monssack Fonseca shuffling my untaxable money.

brilliantcode··on Robinhood stock trading app confirms $110M raise at $1.3B valuation
> Wow, so that's effectively opening up new easy to get credit vehicles for unsophisticated investors. How could that go wrong?

This is the hallmark of modern day capitalism. By issuing loans knowing full well they will never pay back, you can collude with banks to threaten to kill the economy when the government hesitates about cutting them a cheque.

brilliantcode··on Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer to Make $186M from Verizon Deal
Modern day feudalism except the shareholders collectively represents the master controlling the workers through the CEO.

It makes sense why a massive payout would be valuable in contrast to the billions of dollars in unlimited upside rewards a share price uplift would bring.

Marissa Mayer spends $1.1 billion and makes ~0.2 billion. It almost seems like her bonus is tied to how much she spent on acquisitions.

brilliantcode··on Alphabet's Self-Driving Cars to Get Their First Real Riders
Well, if Tesla was a Japanese company and people died, ritual suicide would be the one of two possible options. The other is dishonor.
brilliantcode··on Alphabet's Self-Driving Cars to Get Their First Real Riders
The one where you build and market something but then it turns out to be something less than expectations.

Ethic issues arise when the expectation is that the occupants will live and then your product falling short on those critical constraint.

Because when you design something for the masses, you are directly responsible for the deaths caused by your product.

This is not a matter of philosophy, from one engineer to another, it's our duty.

brilliantcode··on Alphabet's Self-Driving Cars to Get Their First Real Riders
wow...this is pretty scary.

Imagine if the video didn't have the friendly European accent and patches of green. Imagine if that was a real life scenario and the greens were a hazard.

I wonder if there are more such videos that show Tesla Autopilot freaking out. It would be an eye opener, Tesla's stock price is dependent on Autopilot among other innovations.

brilliantcode··on Alphabet's Self-Driving Cars to Get Their First Real Riders
> Killing a few extra people today to bring self driving cars to market faster could actually save more lives in total. I have much more respect for Tesla for shipping something.

There's no evidence to suggest that is the case. If anything, Tesla has made it more dangerous to assume that it's safe and falsely autonomous.

When you create new drugs, the FDA definitely doesn't look to kindly on people who think like Silicon Valley. "Killing people is product testing" won't fly in pharmaceuticals.

I'm glad that we don't have people like you designing drugs for the masses!

brilliantcode··on Amazon Launches Self-Service Marketplace for Subscription Providers
Amazon is basically creating an ecosystem for subscription based businesses where they hold all the customers hostage in return for a piece of your action.
brilliantcode··on On Chinese Writing: Evolution
I'm saying a modified Korean alphabet to distinguish tonality of vowels with the pinyin four sounds.
brilliantcode··on On Chinese Writing: Evolution
One crazy idea I had to make Chinese less complex is to use the Korean alphabet while retaining some common Chinese characters that the Korean alphabet cannot reproduce in terms of sound. You could even use accents to indicate the specific tone.

我是韩国人。- wo shi hangguo ren can easily and concisely be written using Korean alphabet phonetically.

The two are a perfect match. One system to easily construct sounds and the other carrying deep compressed semantics with the minimal sound syntax.

It would be like like what Vietnamese language did using roman alphabets and accents.

brilliantcode··on High-performance .NET by example: Filtering bot traffic
what if the "grey" traffic came from residential IP addresses using a normally distributed range of user agents? How would you reliable distinguish them from regular traffic?
brilliantcode··on Theranos Secretly Bought Outside Lab Gear, Ran Fake Tests: Court Filings
One can a lot from this list, this is super valuable for my needs!
brilliantcode··on Theranos Secretly Bought Outside Lab Gear, Ran Fake Tests: Court Filings
HN is on fire today. Zecco and now Theranos. I'm getting the feeling that we are going to see more and more stories like this in the near future.

Theranos running fake tests is just another example of the type of charlatans enabled by socioeconomic lineage.

> Theranos plans to offer investors shares in the company in exchange for them not filing lawsuits against the embattled blood-testing company.

How far removed can you be from reality to even think like this?

brilliantcode··on What Happens When You Send a Zero-Day to a Bank?
this is a major bombshell. I'd hate to be those guys running zecco. The fact that they coerced an NDA to hide the millions of customer transactions that now have no way of proving were legitimate or not.

I'm pretty sure the author wasn't the only guy looking for vulnerability. I'm pretty certain criminal minded folks would've already used it....with no way of finding out which are real or manipulated.

Which further raises the question, why they would go to extreme length to cover their tracks? They could've easily saved themselves trouble by coming clean but because they've gone such great length to hide it and threaten anyone who tries to expose it makes this a hollywood type story. That just seems so over the top like they are protecting something much bigger.

brilliantcode··on South Korea’s deployment of THAAD upsets China, seen as espionage tool
China has no one but Xi is to blame. He gets an F for foreign policy. By delaying action on North Korea at the beginning of their nuclear ambition, they've increased tensions in the region with very little benefit to China and a ton of win for US, S. Korea & Japan by having powerful THAAD radars.

It is the radars that is the bigger issue because it diminishes China's nuclear projection in the region.

brilliantcode··on [dead]
vkou's comment illustrates a possible reason as to why they've failed:

> Immediately the lightbulb went on in Ryan’s mind that there was a significant shift happening in the market from a physical credit card to digital payments. His mind went wild as he dreamed about what the future of digital payments could look like and within a short time after he launched Plastc."

So, after shopping at a store that sells fruit smoothies and sneakers (?), and being told that nobody cares enough about a universal credit card to use the free Google Wallet one, he concluded that the future is a universal credit card that people will pay hundreds of dollars for?
