Capitalism creates structural pressures which marginalize those without capital. It's a rigged game. One in which the player is told with hard work and wit that the player can become just like them-oppress others in exchange for a diminishing utility for increase in capital that can never be satiated.

brilliantcode··on I supported legalizing all drugs, then the opioid epidemic happened
> They're heroin addicts who would gladly choose that if it were legal.

It seems more of a preference. Lot of heroin users dislike the fetanyl high and remain heroin users.

> I'm glad you understand that potency is the issue, but you're advocating policy that causes potency to increase.

I disagree. The policy that made sense for mild opiods, namely legalizing and regulation. However, we are dealing with an extremely harmful chemical-a tiny grain size of salt of carfentinil will kill. There's just no way this can be used recreationally and responsibly.

brilliantcode··on I supported legalizing all drugs, then the opioid epidemic happened
Fetanyl & Carfentanil aren't hard drugs anymore, it's literally killing people. We are no longer talking about Heroin which are the classic hard drugs. I'm trying to argue for a clear distinction between those two groups.
brilliantcode··on I supported legalizing all drugs, then the opioid epidemic happened
While I agree that prohibition is harmful and creates huge black markets, we are no longer talking about recreational drug but an active public health crisis where people are buying literally poison that will kill them.

I'm not calling for an all out sudden prohibition but to rehabilitate those already addicted while eradicating further supply of fetanyl.

Heroin and fetanyl are two very different beasts. While heroin seems to have a long use life for it's addicts, fetanyl literally kills because of it's extreme potency.

Carfentinil, the elephant tranquilizer is 100x stronger than fetanyl. There's no way we as a society can allow this to flow freely. It's no longer a drug but poison that absolutely kills its users.

brilliantcode··on I supported legalizing all drugs, then the opioid epidemic happened
I used to be very pro-legalization of all drugs in my early 20s but I've shifted completely after seeing so many Fetanyl overdose cases in Vancouver as well as now we are seeing Elephant tranquilizers make its way. Some drugs are just too damn harmful to even be consumed by it's end users.

The thing about opiod is that it completely warps the human mind. Outside of managing extreme pain, it really should be banned.

For those who are addicted, they should not be viewed from a legal platform but medical care that actively tries to rehabilitate them.

Agreed. I can't believe some people still view drug use as criminal behavior. These are people who otherwise are out of coping resources and variety of other factor. It should be handled with medical assistance, not locking them up and creating life long criminals/addicts in the process.

I think Portugal is a great demonstration of what I've illustrated - helping addicts while going after the supply and providing a publicly accessible harm reduction platform and alternative to hard drugs.

Vancouver has safe injection sites but it's hard to go after the dealers as they are highly decentralized and blends right in or often protected by layers of addicts who sell to support their own high.

brilliantcode··on Facebook and the Cost of Monopoly
Youtube & Netflix is the new TV. I don't think lot of people sit on their couch and watch Facebook videos all night.

I don't think Facebook can ever reach Google's level. Google is expensive for a reason because it's highly valuable since people are searching to buy.

Facebook is cheap because you are really casting a wide net and hoping to catch a fish. This is less efficient than Google's Adword.

brilliantcode··on Facebook is building brain-computer interfaces for typing and skin-hearing
This would be very interesting to see from a security stand point of view. We are introducing another attack vector. ex. Imagine if you could phish someone's brain.
brilliantcode··on Facebook and the Cost of Monopoly
What does Facebook have monopoly on? Last time I checked, Google still dominated online ad spend.
brilliantcode··on CodeStar – Quickly Develop, Build, and Deploy Applications on AWS
I think this coupled with their acquisition of c9.io is beginning to look like a real "cloud killer app".

My vision for AWS is being able to login to AWS and see c9 with one click deploy and configuration.

I'm patiently awaiting for this. It was one thing that really woke me up to Azure with their wizard form directly from Visual Studio. After AWS reinvent 2016, the Azurphoria wore off and I was an AWS fanboy once more. Having the ability to edit/deploy inside my browser would be a huge tide turning moment.

brilliantcode··on Theranos Agrees to Pay $4.65M in Arizona Refunds
No problem. As someone who is a firm believer in social equality across gender, orientation, race, culture and religious identity., it irks to me see the subtle and cleverly veiled micro-aggressions that women face in this environment where logic regardless of it's merit dominates all else, even empathy.

It's also the result of being around highly technocentric where we've erroneously optimized for logic as the driver in all debates. Unfortunately, dialectics aren't very popular.

For example, I regularly see transphobic statements that simply go undownvoted/unflagged on HN. I was even downvoted for adding Chelsea Manning, a transgender whistleblower, had full rights to be the correct gender because it was a human right.

Ever since Trump got elected, I find HN picked up a bit of intolerance.

brilliantcode··on Theranos Agrees to Pay $4.65M in Arizona Refunds
Well I just find it hypocritical that the mods would censor dubious and subjective criteria for what's considered unsubstantial a.k.a. whoever the HN elite circles dislike or feels like a threat to their narrative.
brilliantcode··on Theranos Agrees to Pay $4.65M in Arizona Refunds
I don't know why the rest of YC is downvoting and claiming this isn't the case. If you search previous Theranos threads, you will find questionable comments extrapolating a blanket view on women in tech.
brilliantcode··on How Western Civilization Could Collapse
I think the gist of the article is that western styled democracy is always going to be more vastly more expensive & economically fragile than any authoritarian superpower that can simply threaten to kill it's own people or harvest their organs to boost GDP and serve it's elite.

It uses Syria to make case that climate change was responsible butterly effect:

> . Syria, for example, enjoyed exceptionally high fertility rates for a time, which fueled rapid population growth. A severe drought in the late 2000s, likely made worse by human-induced climate change, combined with groundwater shortages to cripple agricultural production. That crisis left large numbers of people – especially young men – unemployed, discontent and desperate. Many flooded into urban centres, overwhelming limited resources and services there. Pre-existing ethnic tensions increased, creating fertile grounds for violence and conflict. On top of that, poor governance – including neoliberal policies that eliminated water subsidies in the middle of the drought – tipped the country into civil war in 2011 and sent it careening toward collapse.

Which is shockingly accurate.

It makes parallel case for the rise of populism in US and EU becoming an increasingly less welcoming region as it faces the full pressure from collapsed countries in the middle east.

tl;dr: learn Mandarin or Russian because they are far more likely to survive a global economic collapse.

brilliantcode··on Ask Jessica Livingston: If Founders at Work were written today, who'd be in it?
> Which YC companies are successful?

I dont know the founders but the idea that you could start the apts section of craigslist that out values real established businesses itself is a huge motivator.

Of course with close examination, nothing more than a repeat of near zero interest rate capital flooding a crowding market.

Some will strike the lotto, most will not. Hindsight bias is not at all being discussed here.

excellent link, I think it offers a great deal of transparency into USGOV and it's spending in a way that's never been done before.
brilliantcode··on Nintendo Discontinues the NES Classic Edition
Yes, it's my favorite story.

tl;dr: Sony gets backstabbed by Nintendo, proceeds to destroy them in their own staple industry for the next few decades by releasing Sony Playstation.

brilliantcode··on Nintendo Discontinues the NES Classic Edition
Anytime I see Switch mentioned, I think about nintendo's ol' switcheroo 22 years ago that ultimately outdid nintendo.
brilliantcode··on Autodraw – Fast Drawing for Everyone
interesting, it definitely supports the narrative of AI replacing changing our jobs, in this case the designer.

For less artistic folks like me, this tool is from heavens. How many times did you want to illustrate a simple diagram but couldn't draw or use photoshop?

Having said that I can see Autodraw still needs more work done. It failed to recognize a phallus.

brilliantcode··on Electron is flash for the desktop (2016)
because they don't need to. Our phones and computers aren't where they were 10~15 years ago. The end user doesn't even notice if an app is native or running in Electron.

Given that constraint, time to market becomes crucial as the huge cross platform barrier is significantly reduced by Electron.

It's also a demographic shift. Young developer's aren't coding in Java peak world anymore. We haven't even reached peak Javascript yet.

brilliantcode··on Electron is flash for the desktop (2016)
I don't get this article. What does the author propose instead? Cross-platform is tough to get right and it places much burden on developers focusing on application logic for his niche.

I don't think it's fair to label Electron as Flash just because it's doing things in the background that Chromium authorizes. We know that Chrome Browser and it's underlying technology is in use everywhere and anyone can open it up and take a peek or embed Chromium in their C++ projects.

On top of that Electron takes care of cross-platform issues, and it's performance is under constant iteration by Google, so you have a much better chance of getting to market without having to do the plumbing work.

While I share the concern that Electron seems to spin up fan on my Macbook, it's quite rare that I don't think much about it.

If anything, Electron improves desktop user experience by leveraging web technology. I shudder to think what Slack will look like if it was done with Java Swing. But in some HN'ers mind, that is the "right" way of building this world. I see a big split in thinking amongst the demographic well marinated by Java Is Everywhere (TM) vs Javascript is Everywhere.

brilliantcode··on The company behind Adblock Plus is acquiring micropayment service Flattr
The real problem with the panama papers incident is that it's not clear whether people on that list have done wrong or anything interesting.

Clearly, it was a way to hide away ill gotten cash for some people but it also has legitimate usage. I disagree the way it attempts to paint anyone who's name shows up in the panama papers as a criminal.

Lastly, I want to pay for journalism that weaves together a highly interesting and entertaining story. I think part of the talent is not just telling the facts but weaving a good story that invokes emotional response.

Panama papers did not meet those criteria so it's not as interesting as that paul le roux story.

brilliantcode··on The company behind Adblock Plus is acquiring micropayment service Flattr
I like good investigative journalism and frustrated I can't pay to support it.

For instance, WSJ endlessly sticks paywall for recycled news.

Some journalists risk their lives for the sake of jouranlism.

This was posted a while back on HN and we talked about how to support such journalists that take actual risks which needs to be rewarded.

brilliantcode··on The company behind Adblock Plus is acquiring micropayment service Flattr
I feel like it's being abused now. For instance, I always tip but felt betrayed when another waiter charged tip without even asking, and I was eating alone. I stopped going there.

People are still using Adblock Plus? uBlock is the superior option because I can trust them not to sell out like ADP did.
brilliantcode··on Hackers Hijack entire operation of Brazilian bank
crime pays really well. nobody likes to admit it. most of the rich powerful people dont think twice about it. it seems like to get ahead in this capitalist world, crime is a growth hack strategy. even at the white collar level, crimes are less punishing and more forgiving than violent crimes when the economic aftermath of Enron, Theranos, Madoff is far far detrimental.
brilliantcode··on Mexican Newspaper Shuts Down, Saying It Is Too Dangerous to Continue
There is no norm or enforcement for citations. That is your personal preference. I don't want to spend time chasing down and writing citations. Fact checking is really up to the reader. There is no rule written that says all comments must have proper citations following APA formatting.

no but I spent a lot of time studying this research when I was getting my econ degree and it made perfect sense to me. That might explain my emotional attachment to this theory, coupled with my sympathy towards African Americans downtrodden by institutional racism hidden in plain sight.
