In the SCRUM shop I used to work, I did this all the time for our QA dept when the sprint was fairly trivial. If I didn't the PMs and the BAs would start breathing down their necks like they weren't working.
I imagine these communities will end up resembling the student ghettos of Allston, MA. An amazing place when you're 18, but just depressing when you're 28.
I think these bottom of the barrel techies have got it wrong. How many home schooled kids have been accepted as founders into YC? My guess is not very many. Most founders are elite college graduates that come K-12 schools where standardized testing is the norm.
I love sports that are one on one but couldn't care less about teams. When somebody brings up "the game", I usually respond with "the fight", and then we'll both race to cut the conversation short.
Redis easily creates millions of dollars in value, but antirez doesn't get to capture any of it. A 6 figure sponsorship is a drop in the bucket of what antirez should be earning.
It's easier to write bad OOP than bad procedural code.
Let me guess what's happening here. Some kid recently read the gang of four design patterns book and now thinks he can turn your battle tested scripts into reusable extensible modules?
Unfortunately this is all too common, especially in SV. There are just too many "forever alone" types with hiring power, and girls who will do anything to be a successful "young professional."
In regards to your third point, how do you differentiate yourself from a 23 year old kid who has the same amount of experience with the new technologies? Also how do live with yourself having to learn this new platform written by someone half your age?
Yes it will. But only at the companies where you wouldn't want to work at anyway. Enterprise companies with cushy layers of middle management love 'B' and 'C' players.
You shouldn't care about the egos you run into at these meetups and hackathons. The majority of them were the beta males of their high schools and haven't accomplished anything other than having 50 followers on github.
Any enterprise company that's all aboard the .NET and Team Foundation Server train. With the daily scrums, sprint planning, and interruptions from the stakeholders, taking a full work week to create one table in Oracle/SQL Server is par for the course.
It's because the people hiring you are in their late 20s and have culture fit as the second most important attribute. I've seen it first hand where my team chose a 30 year old man child over a 40 year old. The latter actually got marks against him because he wore a suit to the interview.
If you're young and fit just forgo it. It's very unlikely a basement dwelling neck beard would get hurt writing javascript and refreshing the browser a million times.
I guess I live in a bubble then because even the recruiters I've worked with suggested a "Side Projects" field on my resume. This despite my highly relevant employment history.
