brokencode··on Claude becomes number one app on the U.S. App Store
Yeah, being able to switch quickly between amounts is my number one request for the iOS app right now. Logging in on the browser is a good idea though.
brokencode··on Windows 11 Notepad to support Markdown
Yeah IDK. Wordpad is built around rich text, with all the weirdness and complexity that comes with it. I know for a fact that .rtf is absurdly complicated to work with, and I assume that .docx is similar.

I’m willing to bet that adding markdown to Notepad was a lot simpler than trying to make it work in Wordpad, especially since you’d probably still have to support rich text.

brokencode··on AI Added 'Basically Zero' to US Economic Growth Last Year, Goldman Sachs Says
Nope it’s bleak. Try to enjoy life.
brokencode··on AI Added 'Basically Zero' to US Economic Growth Last Year, Goldman Sachs Says
You must have a really bleak view on life to think an adult should never get excited like a child.

Adult life doesn’t have to be boring drudgery, you know. I mean, it mostly is, but the rare moments of childlike joy and excitement are some of the best parts.

As far as the putting a damper on anything, nope it doesn’t. And it never will.

The people excited about AI are excited because of the impacts they see on their own jobs and daily lives. We don’t care what Goldman Sachs has to say about productivity.

brokencode··on AI Added 'Basically Zero' to US Economic Growth Last Year, Goldman Sachs Says
Why do I get the feeling that AI skeptics will treat it as definitive and irrefutable proof that they were right all along even though it’s one data point in an industry that’s hasn’t even been around for 5 years.
brokencode··on Gemini 3.1 Pro
This keeps getting repeated for all kinds of model releases, but isn’t necessarily true. It’s possible to make all kinds of changes without updating the pretraining data set. You can’t judge a model’s newness based on what it knows about.
brokencode··on GPT-5.2 derives a new result in theoretical physics
I feel like the only upside of the downvote is to act as sort of a mob moderation system, allowing offensive comments to naturally sink to the bottom.

Maybe in the future, platforms can have high quality auto moderation using AI to read every post and delete/flag those not following community guidelines.

I’m sure this would work well today, though not sure about the cost.

brokencode··on GPT-5.2 derives a new result in theoretical physics
Crazy that an honest question like this gets downvoted.

I honestly think the downvote button is pretty trash for online communities. It kills diversity of thought and discussion and leaves you with an echo chamber.

If you disagree with or dislike something, leave a response. Express your view. Save the downvotes for racism, calls for violence, etc.

brokencode··on OpenAI has deleted the word 'safely' from its mission
They already got bailed out on the Chrome antitrust trial because the judge thought AI was going to disrupt search anyway.

And of course it is, though Google may be a prime beneficiary.

brokencode··on Gemini 3 Deep Think
You realize that science and technology does in fact produce medical breakthroughs that cure disease, right?

On the other hand, prayer doesn’t heal anybody and there’s no proof of supernatural beings.

brokencode··on Gemini 3 Deep Think
Like I said, pointless strawmanning.

You’ve once again made up a claim of “two more weeks” to argue against even though it’s not something anybody here has claimed.

If you feel the need to make an argument against claims that exist only in your head, maybe you can also keep the argument only in your head too?

brokencode··on Gemini 3 Deep Think
Ok, here I am living in the real world finding these models have advanced incredibly over the past year for coding.

Benchmaxxing exists, but that’s not the only data point. It’s pretty clear that models are improving quickly in many domains in real world usage.

brokencode··on Gemini 3 Deep Think
You are fighting straw men here. Any further discussion would be pointless.
brokencode··on Gemini 3 Deep Think
Who said they’re godlike today?

And yes, you are probably using them wrong if you don’t find them useful or don’t see the rapid improvement.

brokencode··on Gemini 3 Deep Think
They are using the current models to help develop even smarter models. Each generation of model can help even more for the next generation.

I don’t think it’s hyperbolic to say that we may be only a single digit number of years away from the singularity.

brokencode··on I write games in C (yes, C) (2016)
Nobody claimed it was impressive. It’s a little unusual to use C instead of C++, but that’s about it.
brokencode··on The Waymo World Model
There was a point in time when basically every well known AI researcher worked at Google. They have been at the forefront of AI research and investing heavily for longer than anybody.

It’s kind of crazy that they have been slow to create real products and competitive large scale models from their research.

But they are in full gear now that there is real competition, and it’ll be cool to see what they release over the next few years.

brokencode··on GPT-5.3-Codex
I’m hoping they add better IDE integration to track active file and selection. That’s the biggest annoyance I have in working with Codex.
brokencode··on Xcode 26.3 – Developers can leverage coding agents directly in Xcode
Idk, I feel like these coding assistant features aren’t that hard to add, but can provide a lot of value to developers. Most or all popular IDEs now support similar features.

I don’t disagree that Apple could use a major focus on bug fixing across their platforms right now though.

brokencode··on How London became the rest of the world’s startup capital
At least Elon Musk didn’t end up getting it, which he tried before Google swooped in.
brokencode··on When AI 'builds a browser,' check the repo before believing the hype
It’s just the easiest metric to measure progress. Measuring real progress in terms of meeting user needs with high quality is a lot harder.
brokencode··on When AI 'builds a browser,' check the repo before believing the hype
Every line of code is technical debt. Some of the hardest projects I’ve ever worked on involved deleting as much code as I wrote.
brokencode··on Claude's new constitution
Yes, but when does Claude have the opportunity to kill children? Is it really something that happens? Where is the risk to Anthropic there?

On the other hand, no brand wants to be associated with CSAM. Even setting aside the morality and legality, it’s just bad business.

brokencode··on Vibecoding #2
You are not disproving my point. You are just repeating that you don’t want to try to learn how you can actually use AI tools to help you work, but yet you still want to complain online that they are a waste of time and money.
brokencode··on Vibecoding #2
GitHub Copilot has a free tier as well. The $20/month one gives you much better models though.

All I’m saying is that the vast majority of people who say that AI dev tools don’t work and are a waste of time/money don’t know how and really haven’t even made a serious attempt at learning how to use them.

brokencode··on Vibecoding #2
Who cares if it’s better in 6 months if you find it useful today?

And I reject that anything you learn today will be invalid. It’ll be a base of knowledge that will help you understand and adopt new tools.

brokencode··on Vibecoding #2
You are exposing your lack of learning how to use the tools.

Tools like GitHub copilot can access the CLI. It can look up commands for you. Whatever you do in the terminal, it can do.

You can encode common instructions and info in AGENTS.md to say how and where to look up this info. You can describe what tools you expect it to use.

There are MCPs to help hook up other sources of context and info the model can use as well.

These are the things you need to learn to make effective use of the technology. It’s not as easy as going to ChatGPT and asking a question. It just isn’t.

Too many people never get past this low level of knowledge, then blame the tool.

brokencode··on Vibecoding #2
So using something once or twice is plenty to give it a fair shake?

How long did it take to learn how to use your first IDE effectively? Or git? Or basically any other tool that is the bedrock of software engineering.

AI fools people into thinking it should be really easy to get good results because the interface is so natural. And it can be for simple tasks. But for more complex tasks, you need to learn how to use it well.

brokencode··on Apple picks Gemini to power Siri
Oh well that’s a good problem to have, isn’t it? Siri being so good that they don’t want to mess it up.

That gives them plenty of runway to test and optimize new models internally before release and not feel like they need to rush them out because Siri sucks.

brokencode··on Apple picks Gemini to power Siri
I’m not so sure. Just think about coding assistants with MCP based tools. I can use multiple different models in GitHub Copilot and get good results with similarly capable models.

Siri’s functionality and OS integration could be exposed in a similar, industry-standard way via tools provided to the model.

Then any other model can be swapped in quite easily. Of course, they may still want to do fine tuning, quantization, performance optimization for Apple’s hardware, etc.

But I don’t see why the actual software integration part needs to be difficult.
