bufferoverflow··on Show HN: I built a synthesizer based on 3D physics
Dang it. I am working on the same thing, but in 2D.
bufferoverflow··on Wyze pays $255k of tariffs on $167k of floodlights
And then sells them for $800K.
bufferoverflow··on Qwen3: Think deeper, act faster
What kind of answer do you expect? It all depends on the hotend shape and material, temperature differences, how fast air moves in the room, humidity of the air, etc.
bufferoverflow··on Boxie – an always offline audio player for my 3 year old
Could be simplified a lot by making SD cards as cartridges.
bufferoverflow··on People trust legal advice generated by ChatGPT more than a lawyer
Would be good to know if ChatGPT is better or worse than an average lawyer. I'd bet when it comes to a bit more obscure law knowledge, it's unbeatable.

UK has a two-tier justice system.
bufferoverflow··on A $20k American-made electric pickup with no paint, no stereo, no screen
> if they’re advertising a 150 mile range you would be able to beat that considerably if you drove at 30mph.

Yes, because it's true. But who drives at 30 mph? Grandmas maybe. Not exactly target audience for a truck.

The peak efficiency is actually at 25 mph, not 30.

bufferoverflow··on A $20k American-made electric pickup with no paint, no stereo, no screen
> EVs dont lose 50% of their range at highway speeds.

Yes, they do, compared to 25 mph. I even gave you the chart.

That's not the entire point of art. There are many points of art: inspiration, expression, fun, interior design, exterior design, etc.

AI can create art that covers all of the above, except maybe expression.

bufferoverflow··on A $20k American-made electric pickup with no paint, no stereo, no screen
150 mile range makes it close to useless. As soon as you take it on a highway, the range will likely drop by half. Which means you can only do a round trip of 37 miles before you have to charge.

Even a very aerodynamic Model 3 loses half of range at highway speeds.

bufferoverflow··on Ask HN: Share your AI prompt that stumps every model
It's not bad, because it's one of the valid solutions to that riddle.

How often do you expect to have every possible answer to your question?

bufferoverflow··on Assignment 5: Cars and Key Fobs (2021)
I don't see it. Give an example of how this attack can be executed, a practical application.

I approach my car, I press the button on the fob to open it, and your attack does what exactly?

bufferoverflow··on DeepMind releases Lyria 2 music generation model
You forgot the most important and most common use of art: viewing and listening.

AI can already produce good music, good images. At least I found some that I liked.

And AI doesn't stop you from making art and having fun doing so.

bufferoverflow··on DeepMind releases Lyria 2 music generation model
> No one wants to hear other people's ai songs because they lack meaning and novelty.

That's not true. I already found a few tracks that I like. It's actually impressive what Udio can produce. Also ElevenLabs demoed their music generator, and their demo tracks were all quite cool.

I do agree with you that fine controls are missing, and also splitting instruments/voices into separate tracks.

bufferoverflow··on DeepMind releases Lyria 2 music generation model
Doesn't matter what you want. AI is going to do everything that humans do, and probably better, faster and cheaper.
bufferoverflow··on Assignment 5: Cars and Key Fobs (2021)
Why can't it be very simple and secure. Car and fob share a secret key.

When you click on the open button on the fob, you send

SHA256(key)

Car responds with a random challenge

RND

Fob sends

SHA256(key XOR RND)

Car does the same calculation and compares.

And it doesn't make almost any difference, because other countries are building hume amounts of coal plants. China started 95GW of coal plant construction just last year.
bufferoverflow··on LLM-powered tools amplify developer capabilities rather than replacing them
For many developers the first couple of items isn't a thing, we're just given requirements and the designs. At most, you can point out issues and do time estimates.

For my current job coding is 90% of my time. The rest is meetings, deployments, ticket management. Most of the time coding isn't particularly hard, but it sure consumes lots of time. I've had many days with 1000+ line diffs.

bufferoverflow··on The skill of the future is not 'AI', but 'Focus'
This article makes no sense. It criticizes current LLMs and then without stopping for a second pretends future LLMs will have these problems. Even though hallucination levels have been going down with every generation. Even though every test and benchmark we can come up with, LLMs do better with every generation.

No, students should pay for their own life choices. That money should be returned to taxpayers.

Take-home assignments are basically obsolete. Students who want to cheat, can do so easily. Of course, in the end, they cheat themselves, but that's not the point.
bufferoverflow··on US judge finds administration wilfully defied court order in deportation flights
The illegal migration under Bush was half of the levels of under Biden

https://www.economist.com/content-assets/images/20240127_EPC...

And yes, under Obama it got low, and that's great. He was called Deporter-in-Chief for a reason.

> But the solution and fix for this isn’t abandoning due process rights and turning authoritarian

Again, where were you with this "due process" when Biden manufactured this crime on a massive scale to create more dem voters?

The process is pretty straightforward. You can't prove your legal status, you get deported. Sure, occasionally you will have some injustice when dealing with hundreds of thousands of criminals. None of that would've happened if Biden didn't manufacture this crime in the first place. It's all on him.

bufferoverflow··on US judge finds administration wilfully defied court order in deportation flights
But they imported around ~10K per day for 4 years. Do the math. The 270K deportations, if real, mean nothing. They just let them back in in less than a month.

But I don't believe that 270K number anyway, seems like typical left-wing propaganda.

bufferoverflow··on US judge finds administration wilfully defied court order in deportation flights
You're the one spreading misinformation. Biden didn't deport anyone, he completely opened the border.
