If stuff like this or Alibaba existed when I was a kid I would've gotten myself in so much trouble messing around.

casefields··on AI predicts crime a week in advance with 90 per cent accuracy
For petty crimes that’s true. Unfortunately it’s pretty hard to hide or fudge murders which are still committed a disproportionate amount by blacks. Usually black on black.

I would like to add that these are quite difficult unless you have a baseline of some athleticism. If you’re just getting into fitness these are going to be too hard.

Apple has plenty of bland nondescript office buildings they can close in the area and move those employees there.
casefields··on Are film critics losing sync with audiences?
>How many reviews of movies have you seen from a senior, experienced reviewer got a film really totally wrong?

Tons. Even legendary critics like Ebert got movies wrong. He gave thumbs down to Full Metal Jacket, Blue Velvet, The Thing, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Usual Suspects, Ace Ventura, Tommy Boy, and many more.

casefields··on I couldn’t get over my brother’s death
>The so-called ‘psychotically depressed’ person who tries to kill herself doesn’t do so out of quote ‘hopelessness’ or any abstract conviction that life’s assets and debits do not square. And surely not because death seems suddenly appealing. The person in whom Its invisible agony reaches a certain unendurable level will kill herself the same way a trapped person will eventually jump from the window of a burning high-rise. Make no mistake about people who leap from burning windows. Their terror of falling from a great height is still just as great as it would be for you or me standing speculatively at the same window just checking out the view; i.e. the fear of falling remains a constant. The variable here is the other terror, the fire’s flames: when the flames get close enough, falling to death becomes the slightly less terrible of two terrors. It’s not desiring the fall; it’s terror of the flames. And yet nobody down on the sidewalk, looking up and yelling ‘Don’t!’ and ‘Hang on!’, can understand the jump. Not really. You’d have to have personally been trapped and felt flames to really understand a terror way beyond falling.

-David Foster Wallace

casefields··on Gov. Newsom signs law to stop UC Berkeley enrollment cuts
Hogwash. CEQA is doing exactly what it was meant to do. By its very nature it's a conservative ideal that we should be careful about development.

That process slows/stops things you hate, but also things you like.

casefields··on One Bad Apple
There's a reason they always promote the most extreme cases to restrict liberty:

"The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all." — HL Mencken

casefields··on Apple's New CSAM Protections May Make iCloud Photos Bruteforceable
You ever notice when cops bust a prostitution ring they never call it that? It's been renamed human trafficking. Law enforcement is all in on the marketing game.

Using scarier words will get the public to trade liberty for security every time.
