cbdevidal··on What are locusts and what happened to them?
The jumping grasshoppers at the bottom really surprised me :-)
cbdevidal··on The Forgotten Art of the LAN Party (2023)
At a three person LAN party in 1998, I didn’t have an Ethernet card. The owner of the house had two phone lines. I connected my modem to one of his phone lines and dialed across the room to his dial-up server on his Win95 machine. We played Quake that way :-D A little laggy, but acceptable.
cbdevidal··on The worst job interview I ever had
The little bit I knew about the guy, coder with bad social skills does seem to be a fit.
cbdevidal··on Uber blows through its AI budget in 1 quarter
Pardon my ignorance but could they not switch to a cheaper model? Honest question.
cbdevidal··on The worst job interview I ever had
I couldn’t even tell you the last ten I’d read recently, and I thoroughly enjoy reading.
cbdevidal··on The worst job interview I ever had
Beats my worst interview. For some reason I mentioned that I like reading. The guy then demanded to list the last ten books I read. I just named ten random books that I had read at some point in my life, even in childhood. Pretty bizarre. Glad I didn’t get that job.
cbdevidal··on Ferrari shares fall after launch of first EV as Jony Ive design proves divisive
I agree. Love older cars in the way they look, but I consider them only a little safer than a motorcycle.

And plenty of people drive motorcycles and old cars every day without incident. Just from a percentage basis it’s not as safe.

cbdevidal··on Ferrari shares fall after launch of first EV as Jony Ive design proves divisive
What prevents car manufacturers from taking a normal-looking body style and electrifying it? Seems popular with the aftermarket mods. Every hybrid and EV I can think of looks like a suppository.

Edit: I asked AI the same question and it reminded me that BMW’s i4, Camry Hybrid, Porsche Taycan, Ferrari 296 GTB (hybrid), Corvette E-Ray, F150 Lightning, and Genesis Electrified G80 all look fairly similar to standard ICE vehicles.

cbdevidal··on Uber, Lyft drivers in Massachusetts form first US ride-share union
Doesn’t appear they were successful, seems self driving taxis are still allowed. From my understanding, they have better bargaining rights for companies intending to switch to automation, but nothing preventing a scrappy upstart with only driverless taxis from coming in and eating their lunch.
cbdevidal··on Ferrari Luce
This happened to me, as well. Ironically, it was a Ferrari. The 1986 Ferrari Testarossa felt to my teen self to be a cheap Countach. But it grew on me.
cbdevidal··on Microsoft pulls plug on plans for 244-acre data center in Caledonia (2025)
Fun fact: Large businesses are often tapped to write the laws intended to target large businesses. The process is called “model legislation.” Fox and henhouse.
cbdevidal··on I love my Bluetooth keyboard
Maybe rent a cheap VM for Docker?

I often think to myself when using my iPhone, there is no way I could get desktop work done with this. Can’t recall right now why I have said so but I think it had to do with keeping multiple apps open side by side.

For example this year I have been car shopping and I keep multiple windows open; this would be much harder on my iPhone. Maybe not so much an iPad.

cbdevidal··on Kindle loyalists scramble as Amazon turns page on old e-readers
I guess that must be other devices. I honestly don’t notice on the Nook. Maybe it was designed for it. Shrug

Of course they tested Doom :-D

They might also run Linux kernel 3.7, that supported i386. Gray386linux is still maintained, and runs a patched 3.7 kernel.

It is still possible to remove DRM and export to PDF or epub. Not point-and-click easy, though.

I do both, actually. But I don’t notice the difference personally.
cbdevidal··on Microsoft starts canceling Claude Code licenses
Thanks for the heads up. I had a brainstorming session with Gemini about this (I can’t believe I just typed that sentence lol) and the plan is to switch to two local LLMs; a lightweight, fast 3B model for autocomplete, and a slower 14B model for chat sessions. Then I can switch to a DeepSeek Premium API key for the really tough stuff. It recommended the Continue plugin for VSCode.

When I am away from home I’ll run autossh on my dinosaur road laptop (which probably has 8MB video RAM lol) to connect to the home PC’s LLMs. Gemini assured me that this should run well over my intermittent cellular connection.

You just saved me some headache and money :-D

cbdevidal··on Microsoft starts canceling Claude Code licenses
There’s a new plan? Ugh. I signed up about five months ago.
cbdevidal··on Microsoft starts canceling Claude Code licenses
Can even buy more premium tokens for more Claude use, which I have done once. But most of the time the tokens included in the plan are sufficient.
cbdevidal··on Microsoft starts canceling Claude Code licenses
I’ve been quite content with CoPilot’s $10/mo plan. Still offers access to Claude models (limited tokens) but has no time limits like the $20 Claude plan, so no interruptions in work flow. I use one of the free models for the more pedestrian tasks then sic Claude on the particularly thorny problems. Works very well for me.

Same here. I read your comment from two inches away lol

Crap like this is why I 1.) export my Kindle books to plain PDF 2.) use a Nook Simple Touch. They work perfectly well 100% offline and are CHEAP now.

Primarily use two of these for a prepper book cache. (Two is one and one is none.) The battery lasts about a month on low cost chargers, and a pair of 32GB SD cards holds my entire collection. (A redundant pair since two is one.) Whole thing sits in an EMP bag in the bugout bag of my car, so I always have my library everywhere I go.

Exporting to PDF used to be pretty straightforward; the newest encryption is a lot harder to bypass but is still possible:

Not sure if you’re joking but is it possible to even do that? I understand some books are kept on their cloud servers and only some get downloaded.
cbdevidal··on The memory shortage is causing a repricing of consumer electronics
I don’t. Also from my optimist side :-)
cbdevidal··on The memory shortage is causing a repricing of consumer electronics
The optimist in me hopes this means developers will pay more attention to memory usage in their apps.
cbdevidal··on Nobody understands the point of hybrid cars [video]
Yeah 2010-2015 all had that issue—or I should say it is far more common in that generation. In 2016 they finally fixed it and the fourth generation is really the best one, though the fifth might prove to be as good or better given enough time.
cbdevidal··on Nobody understands the point of hybrid cars [video]
My whole draw to hybrids is low overall cost and longevity. Just two days ago I bought my son a 2007 Prius with 194k miles for $6k; and three weeks ago, a 2008 with 225k miles for my sister for $2.5k. Both should last another 200k if they don’t abuse them.

And if gas goes over $6 I’m buying one for myself, too. I sleep in my car twice a week for work, and being able to run the AC on hot Florida nights will be the cherry on top.

The 2007 is like new except it’s the original battery, so son and I will swap the modules inside the battery pack in a few weeks for some refurbished modules with a warranty. Aside from the battery, the ABS pump is fragile but it is a DIY replacement if you have the time and patience.

Other than that, they just go and go and go, saving money mile after mile.
