cleancoder0··on Arctic Inuit, Native American adaptations to cold and body fat distribution
Yeah, being overweight, having hypogonadism and eating a low calorie diet can result in no weight loss or even weight gain. The energy distribution is all over the place and the lack of calories affects cognition, hormone production etc.

If you were a "good" vegan, as you mentioned, I cannot imagine what kind of foods you ate to have more calories compared to fat (calorie) rich foods like fish, mussels or meat.

500 grams of raw beans is 2000kcal (very little for an avg 45 year old man), contains about 120g of protein, but is around 1.5kg of beanwater sludge when cooked. Impossible to eat in a day for most people. Adding rice, pasta, or other sources of calories still does not help a lot. It takes a lot of food to get to 2500-3000kcal.

Many vegans lack calories in their diet. Older and sedentary vegans that are starting to develop protein resistance (due to age or sedentary lifestyle) also consume way too little protein. A perfect recipe for various metabolic issues and aging related diseases.

This sounds a bit like you went from a low calorie diet that triggered various metabolic shutdowns to a high calorie diet that made your body work again.

Sounds like you went from hypogonadism ( which is associated with all of your listed issues) to something healthier.

Quite impressive if diet solved it, although it might be the calories, not the content.

cleancoder0··on Dependency injection in Go with Uber-go/fx
Given a list of pairs, where one is an object and the other the arguments of the constructor, find a way to construct all of the objects.

Topological sort and run. That’s all there is to dependency injection and I cannot imagine a graph so large that I would care for toposort

cleancoder0··on Failing in Haskell
What Haskell did with Monads is nice, but eventually Monads are just tags on what functionality the function uses.

That being said, I like that Nim and Koka did exactly that. You just tag the functions (IO, Async, Whatever) and it works.

In Haskell, you need monad transformers (which have a runtime costs) or whatever else was made to allow you to work with multiple different effects.

cleancoder0··on Ask HN: Any scientifically proven techniques to boost concentration?
There are studies on creatine and cognitive performance.
cleancoder0··on Soybean oil affects hypothalamus, causes genetic changes in mice: study (2020)
Who ever told anyone to drink soybean oil?

On the other hand, I consume massive amounts of flaxseed oil (insane amounts of omega3), olive oil, sunflower seed oil every single day. I have no issues with weight, no heart or blood vessel issues, blockages.

Ingredient isolation studies of foods are a complete disservice to scientific method.

Any particular food can be part of a healthy diet and lifestyle, absolutely any.

People today are sedentary, just look at natives living in wilderness across the world. They gorge on honey, occasionally eat meat and have insanely strong skeletons and muscles. Look at others that eat only meat, milk and blood, have massive amounts of atherosclerotic plaque, but given their lifestyle in the wilderness, their blood vessels expand and are insanely flexible, only a few unlucky ones die of heart attack very young.

The RDA for Calcium in Western world is so high due to sedentary lifestyle not promoting usage of calcium by the body. There are healthy populations, consuming half the amount and have even less bone fractures.

cleancoder0··on Estonia, allies to trigger NATO Article 4
This is unfortunately highly unlikely. A lot of EU politics depends on the pockets of rich Russian oil firms.

Just look at Austria, very rich but obviously Russian run EU country. (latest prime minister got fired by Russians even though Russia cyberarmy helped him win the elections. They decided he was no longer as compliant, so they leaked data many years after elections, Russian scandals several years before that etc.). Raiffeisen bank in Austria, basically launders money for Russians over the last several decades, with no consequences to the chief officers.

Hungary is another good example.

Another Austrian neighbor, Croatia, not rich, and less influenced by Russians, had one of the biggest scandals ever when the biggest privately owned company in the Balkans (owned by a Croatian), that employs a massive amounts of Croatians, went bankrupt and could have been acquired by creditors (Sberbank and VTB Bank). I guess there was not enough Russian influence in politics and Croatian government put a new law immediately, so that this kind of takeover does not happen (Croatia nationalized the company).

Russia has quite a large reach into EU.

cleancoder0··on What made World of Warcraft's environments so compelling?
I remember returning after the soundtrack change and it did not feel the same. Thousand needles, Tanaris, barrens, zulfarrak were great in Vanilla.
cleancoder0··on Timescale raises $110M Series C
SQLite does not support column based optimizations. Time series data is insanely compressible.
cleancoder0··on Game Boy Wordle clone: How to compress 12972 five-letter words to 17871 bytes
Zero suppressed binary decision diagrams are the best
cleancoder0··on How to set up a blog with Hugo and Cloudflare, and why you should
I do not like Hugo at all. Quite hard to map data inside templates.
cleancoder0··on The Unreasonable Math of Type 1 Diabetes
I once took a 5 hour bike trip on an empty stomach. At some point I couldn’t even turn the pedals. I had to lay on the ground, not feeling better even after half hour. I can still remember the feeling of eating some sweets. Felt like I was reborn. Can’t imagine what it’s like for T1
cleancoder0··on FP techniques that will help you write better JavaScript
Yeah, this goes full FP with fp-ts (although it's TypeScript). The only thing I hate about it is brackets everywhere.

    pipe(
      xs,
      reverse,
      A.map(addOne),
    )
cleancoder0··on U.S. Inflation Accelerates to 40-Year High
Is student debt with variable interest rates or just a fixed rate?

Because variable interest rates can get quite high due to inflation.

cleancoder0··on Every M1 Mac is due for a 2022 refresh with faster M2 chip, new designs
The impact should be in the 0.001%, compared to all of the other activities, like heating, cooling, meat heavy diet, driving a car every day, taking 1 transcontinental flight obliterates all savings from not driving a car for a year.
cleancoder0··on Ask HN: How do you deal with getting old and feeling lost?
Having children does not bring meaning in itself. Your interpretation of having children brings you meaning.

I am extremely happy that I do not have children and that I do not have to deal with children. I have so many meaningful relationships with adults and wonderful life experiences and every morning I look forward to continuing with the day. I do not desire children and I'm completely fine with not having them at all.

cleancoder0··on Web3 doesn’t care about privacy
I feel like some of these comments are autogenerated from some GPT3 running in the cloud.

Cryptography ensures that transaction amounts, sender, receiver are encrypted. There is no way to decrypt the data. You can verify the encrypted data without decrypting it. Everything works similar to Bitcoin but now you and others have no way of figuring out anything valuable by looking at the blockchain, because everything on the blockchain is just encrypted bytes.

Even the node that is the first one to receive all bytes has no idea who is sending, receiving and the amount. Everything is always encrypted.

When I create a transaction that includes my wallet address and the address that receiver gave me, once the transaction is made, the receiver cannot see the original address of my wallet, the 3rd party cannot see the amounts or addresses in the transaction and the receiver can move the money to a different address and I would have no way of figuring out that happened. Similarly, receiver can send me back the amount and I would have no idea from which wallet address it came.

cleancoder0··on Delta CEO wants U.S. to put unruly passengers on 'no-fly' list
Statements like "vaccine does not protect against infection", or "vaccine does not stop transmission" are obviously true, because vaccine cannot be 100% effective.

But the data clearly shows that spread and 2nd order effects are reduced in a heavily vaccinated population.

cleancoder0··on There’s No Such Thing as Clean Code
I like to measure things. Like token count, line count, variable count, method parameter count, indentation level and grokking time.

Clean code minimizes these measurements.

To minimize variable count I can use ternary expressions. To minimize indentation level I think carefully about early returns or extracting blocks of code to functions that do nothing if condition is true (early return).

To minimize grokking time, I revisit old code I've written and measure the time it takes me to understand it. It turns out it correlates quite a lot with line, variable, and token count, indentation level :D

Clean code as commonly defined is far away from any measurable metrics. That's why one might say that it does not exist.
