cli··on A Japanese Pen Maker Anticipated the Fountain-Pen Renaissance
I have a Mont Blanc fountain pen, which I want to use as my main pen but cannot due to the ink spreading and bleeding through cheap notebook paper. Thank you for the ink suggestion.

Is a private company's value akin to a public one's market capitalization? How is this determined?
cli··on The Decline of the Baronial C.E.O
>Princeton is the epitome of a capitalistic school.

Please explain this. I know little about Princeton.

cli··on Airbus A380 – $6.1B in additional costs due to project delays
The dimension of the seats is dependent on the airline. I do not know about the cabin noise.
cli··on President Trump Dismisses FBI Director Comey
I watched that NBC interview here: http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/former-dni-jam.... Right after Clapper answered, the interviewer asked him whether the information exists, and Clapper answered that it does not to his knowledge, but he does not know whether more information has come to light since he left office.
cli··on Bias in the ER
What do, for example, tourists pay? When I buy a plane ticket to the US, there is travel insurance, but I have never needed to use it and do not know how it would work.
cli··on Yahoo SEC Filing: Name change to Altaba Inc and director resignations
Did you add an extra 0? The average programmer salary is around $27,000 per year in Silicon Valley?
cli··on Pregnancy alters woman's brain 'for at least two years'
There are cultures where the grandparents or other relatives mostly take care of the children while the mother works (some parts of China), and there are people who pay for nannies to take care of the children at night.
cli··on Ask HN: Is 170k a good salary for a software developer in Seattle?
>The latitude also means that in January, the sun rises at 10 AM, and it starts getting dark around 3 PM.

No it does not. I grew up in Vancouver, and the latest sunrise is at around 8 am, and sunset at 4 pm.

cli··on YouTube Changes YouTube Heroes Video Stealthily
The difference is that I know that written articles can be changed with no notice. I did not know that youtube videos can be edited like this.
cli··on A Small London Company That Makes Beautiful Globes
This is fascinating. I will be sure to visit that area the next time I visit London. Are you aware of similar areas in New York?
cli··on NYC tech catching up to Silicon Valley, while Seattle flails
$50 billion? Why that number? That seems extraordinarily high. Target has a market value of about $53 billion, and Deutsche Bank $49.7 billion.
cli··on When will rooftop solar be cheaper than the grid?
How difficult is it to install and maintain them? Is it something that can be installed by nonprofessionals?
cli··on AlphaGo beats Lee Sedol again in match 2 of 5
At the root of it, they earn a living by being entertainment. This can be applied to any of the arts or sports. Why are smart people making movies, writing fiction, making music? I think these are the sorts of things that make life worth living.
cli··on The Unbearable Asymmetry of Bullshit
What are the differences between postdocs, research assistants, research scientists and visiting scientists?
cli··on Google achieves AI 'breakthrough' by beating Go champion
Go is far more popular than western chess in China.
cli··on High-Speed Firms Now Oversee Almost All Stocks at NYSE Floor
>It can be solved by an exchange that makes trades every second or on some time interval that is minuscule to a person but enormous to a computer.

I do not see how that will solve the problem. Suppose firm A and firm B both want to buy stock X at prize Z. There is only enough X at prize Z for one of those firms. Both firms send their trade orders withing milliseconds of each other. In your time interval scheme, which firm gets to buy the stock?

cli··on Dead Certainty: How “Making a Murderer” Goes Wrong
> prosecution presents first. (Google Anchoring, Confirmation Bias)

How else would you do this? There is a presumption of innocence; the defendant needs to defend against the arguments made by the prosecution.

cli··on Japanese Suicide Apartments
>So tell me, would you live in one of these suicide apartments?

I would probably seek them out, as they seem to be much cheaper.

cli··on Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer Faces Morale Challenge
>You want to me to go to 3 different sites for Finance when I can get everything at Yahoo! You want me to go to 4 different sites for Sports when I can get everything at Yahoo!

What? No. He/she meant that any of those sites can replace Yahoo by themselves, not that all of them are required.

cli··on Hampshire College changes speed limits to honor math professor
Does it have to do with the video game Dota 2? 322 is a famous number in the Dota community because a pro player once bet against himself for a payout of $322.
cli··on 'More Ashley Madison' data leaked onto dark net
Note that about 40% of those accounts state that they are single. http://dadaviz.com/s/ashley-madison-revealed
cli··on Military technology: Laser weapons get real
The article states that the firm MBDA in Germany had helped to show that reflective armour, at least with mirrors, is not a good defense against lasers, as

>any dust on the mirrored surface would get burned in, and lead to the destruction of the target even faster than with a non-reflective surface.

cli··on Military technology: Laser weapons get real
I think that demonstration was to show that the laser system can be useful against very cheap home-made mortars and rockets. The military would rather use a laser that costs tens or hundreds of dollars per shot to defend against mortars that cost perhaps several hundred dollars, rather than the current conventional methods that cost tens of thousands of dollars per shot.
cli··on Ten Commandments of Sushi
Which city? In NYC, it should be easy to find some excellent places. The meal I had at Sushi Yasuda was one of the best I remember.
cli··on A Tiny Minority of Elite Grad Schools Produce Most Tenured Academics
> you've opted into playing on super-hard mode, where you have to work twice as hard and be twice as good to get as far as someone who opted for the best school to which they were accepted.

Does this matter very much if the PhD student is not looking for a job in academia?

cli··on What Doesn't Seem Like Work?
Organic chemistry is the least or one of the least math-intensive chemistry subjects at the undergraduate level.
cli··on GoFundMe Tops Kickstarter as World’s #1 Crowdfunding Platform
I had not heard of gofundme prior to this. I think this is because the places where I would naturally see news about such crowdfunding sites are heavily biased towards the kinds of projects that Kickstarter specializes in, namely games. As duskwuff wrote here (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8889346), gofundme is "explicitly aimed at personal fundraising (e.g, "medical expenses, education costs, volunteer programs, youth sports, funerals & memorials" [1]), whereas Kickstarter is aimed at projects with a well-defined goal and a tangible result."
