clojurerocks··on Better Volunteering for Web Geeks
Im a web programmer and social entrepreneur currently developing django driven web sites for a few non profits. Im also hoping to develop an incubator next year to help get more technology driven non profits off the road. Im always looking to connect with others interested in similiar.
clojurerocks··on Is it too late to learn to think/write code?
I am currently teaching a few people how to program. If youre interested in joining us, drop me a line at startupz.net@gmail.com
clojurerocks··on Ask HN: Python based cloud solution
Im actually learning python for the first time myself and am currently working with the various cloud engines. If you want im willing to compare notes and maybe we can even work together to learn it better. Drop me a note at startupz.net@gmail.com.
clojurerocks··on Portrit - Digg/Reddit for Photo Sharing
Interesting. Ive had a very similiar idea for a while now, actually its almost the exact same idea i think, but havent had the time to implement it. Ill be following your startup to see how things work out. Good luck with it.
clojurerocks··on Ask HN: Rails 3 hosting?
Thanks for the quick reply. Im not looking for quick response time although the last host i just tried had horrible response time. This would only be a development account. As i said ive looked at heroku but the git aspect of it just confuses me.

Also i wanted something cheap which i guess for rails 3 isnt going to fly. Ill look at linode though.

clojurerocks··on Ask HN: experiences with couchbase mobile?
How does couchbase compare to localStorage?
clojurerocks··on Appcelerator Titanium: From a developer's perspective
This was my experience as well actually. I looked at phonegap appcelarator and rhomobile for a while but it seemed that there was such a steep learning curve that you could just build things in the native platforms and have full access to the everything rather then having quasi access via webkit.

All three really were a letdown frankly. Right now im learning Jquery Mobile which oddly enough is kind of cool. Its got a decent community behind it. ANd its jquery so its somewhat more generic.

clojurerocks··on Ask HN: Good Reading for Young People about Science?
Im actually in a bit of a similar situation. I have a niece who reads at a similar level. She reads mostly fantasy books so im not sure about science. Ill try to look some up and leave them here.
clojurerocks··on SHOW HN: Take a look at my startup; Show off your vocabulary prowess
I was actually considering developing something like this myself. :-). Im a social entrepreneur with a focus on technology and like the education and game markets. Ill bookmark your site and try to follow the development.
clojurerocks··on Mobl - A new open source language for mobile devices
Hello. Can you compare this to whats already out there? Meaning PhoneGap Rhomobile and Appcelarator?
clojurerocks··on Phpfog "Down for maintenance"
So does that mean ec2 is insecure? Or is the flamewar about how the article is really about the writer blaming their problems on something thats really not at fault. Meaning php or ec2?

Thanks!

clojurerocks··on Phpfog "Down for maintenance"
Whats up with the attitude? Seriously. The arrogance and self righteousness on HN is ridiculous sometimes and really kills the conversation.

To your point though no i didnt read the article because there was so much noise between it and the flamewar going on here that it was difficult to figure out what was even going on. However, to quote you, "The article is about a PHP hosting company that is getting merc'd because of the security flaws inherent in PHP that lead to their design decision to use Amazon EC2."

Ya wasnt that the question i just asked? Seriously maybe you should read the question before just downvoting it and replying with no reply. My question was actually a serious question. I want to know if there are security flaws in php as i am looking at it for a few projects and would like to know if there are issues with it before i start them.

clojurerocks··on Phpfog "Down for maintenance"
Is this at all incriminating against php itself? Tumblr which is written in php had a security issue and now php fog. Is php hard to secure as opposed to other languages/platforms?
clojurerocks··on Show HN: Simple Web Bookmarking on One Big Page
I actually had thought of this exact same idea about a year ago. Mainly as a way to learn jquery and because i look at a lot of web pages during the day and traditional bookmarking really doesnt work for me. I started adding alot of ideas onto it though and ended up dropping eventually. Are you pleanning on developing it further? Oh i was even going to use a very similiar name. :-)
clojurerocks··on [dead]
Hello from a fellow triathlete! I cant give money but ill post your link on my FB page. I might be doing a Lavaman myself but this ones in NJ. Good luck with your race!
clojurerocks··on Ask HN: I'm a 14yo HS student. How can I improve my situation?
Can we chat through email instead? Mine is startupz.net@gmail.com
clojurerocks··on Ask HN: I'm a 14yo HS student. How can I improve my situation?
Im a social entrepreneur involved with several non profits doing programming projects. Ive actually be brainstorming an organization that uses these projects to help people like yourself learn about the industry and the tools. As such if youd like to help out and thus learn about programming wed be open to having you involved. So you can learn from the projects and from myself as well as other people on the projects.

Please let me know if interested. Thanks.

clojurerocks··on Ideas for philanthropic web services?
It should be there. But if its not for some reason, its startupz.net@gmail.com. Id be more then happy to tell you about them. Thanks.
clojurerocks··on Ideas for philanthropic web services?
Im a social entrepreneur currently involved with non profits doing exactly what you are talking about. Theres actually endless ideas for this so the challenge isnt which idea the challenge is to decide that you really want to do it.

Personally i decided it was worth it and now have more projects then i can handle all or most of which are focused on helping a larger group of people through services related to education and health and other "cause" oriented topics.

If you want to talk more send me an email. And if you want to help out with any of the projects let me know as well.

clojurerocks··on Ask HN: How to start-up when you are not technical?
I have a background in web development and would be open to talking to you about your project and helping you out in any way i can. Including helping you get your coding off the ground. Please let me know if you are interested. Thanks.
clojurerocks··on How did MySpace do such a bad UI/UX job?
Dont forget MySpace was THE site out there when doing these things was considered the best business plan. Hence why Ning and a few other sites like it were also popular. However that was a LONG time go and things have changed alot since then.
clojurerocks··on A Week After Google Changes Algo, Mahalo Fires 10% of Staff
Jason, you might consider doing a non profit with a more narrow focused education project rather then a for profit catch all product. Im personally involved with 2 projects that are being directed at kids and teens and are using game mechanics to try to get them excited about learning.

There is a DESPARATE need within this market for passionate knowledgeable and skilled people who are willing to invest their time energy and certainly money to help build these projects and get the word out. Personally knowing that the work that im doing will help kids and teens and maybe even young adults get excited about learning is more exciting then the idea of having everybody use my product and then being able to sell it and make alot of money. Ok almost as exciting. :-).

So please consider it. Thank you.

clojurerocks··on Quora for Startups: Sprouter Pivots to Focus on Q&A for Entrepreneurs
Sprouter is an odd beast. It was started a few years ago as a twitter for entrepreneurs. Its based in canada so that was part of its marketing and was founded by a woman which was also part of its marketing. It had a terrible interface for a while which they sort of improved over time. I tried to use it for a few months and found it was loaded with spam. It also has a very small userbase in general so theres really nobody to follow and no real discussions taking place.

Why they are now becoming a quora clone is frankly bizarre. I think they are becoming another digg or myspace or hunch where they just are becoming desparate and are probably either losing users or just not having an increase in traffic. SO they are just throwing different plans out there to see which ones stick.

clojurerocks··on Ask/Offer HN: Anyone wants to connect?
I second the Hear Hear! Im actually involved with social entrepreneurship right now and doing several projects with non profits and technology. So ya would definitely be open to talking about them or technology and startups in general.

Im on skype under edwards_ross and my gmail is startupz.net at gmail.com.

Maybe we can setup an email list or something and get a talk going.

clojurerocks··on Ask HN: What is a good alternative to techcrunch?
http://www.venturebeat.com http://www.readwriteweb.com http://www.fastcompany.com
clojurerocks··on Tornado 1.2
Whats the difference between tornado and node.js? Besides the obvious that they are developed in different languages.
clojurerocks··on Google's Design Strategy is Killing Them.
Google is really an engineering company. SO they dont emphasize design as much as you might. Which is good because they have some cool projects but bad in that theyre applications tend to be really ugly.
clojurerocks··on Ask HN: What else do you do besides computers?
Triathlons
clojurerocks··on Ask HN: My younger brother wants to get into web engineering. Where to Start?
Learn how basic coding works using any of the languages that are out today. Such as python or ruby or php or any of them. Learn loops and dates and databases and logic and the like. I would be open to tutoring him as well. Send me an email at startupz.net@gmail.com. Look forward to hearing from you.
clojurerocks··on Poll: Tech Bubble?
