cloudwizard··on Getting Google to ban our entire company
My experience with Microsoft was different. Back in the day, I installed IIS server ( MS official web server) and it wiped my system. I called customer support and they said that I needed to reinstall to fix it. I re-installed everything. Installed IIS and everything was wiped again. Customer Support said that they could not help and I should wait for the next patch.

cloudwizard··on CEO of Bulletproof Coffee shares why he left Silicon Valley and moved to Canada
Some people consider their children their first priority. Why the US education system is failing above average children is a different argument. I send both my kids to private school and consider it a necessity.
cloudwizard··on Inside Vancouver's Brock Commons, World's Tallest Mass Timber Building (2017)
The speed of construction is due to prefab wood. Prefab concrete would be just as fast or faster.

It has nothing to do with wood. Wood could be easier on the environment though.

cloudwizard··on Anvil: full stack web apps built only with Python
I would pay double if the app produced was a progressive web app.
cloudwizard··on When Citi Bikes Are Faster Than Taxis in New York City
If you are commuting on Caltrain in SF, it is way easier to take the citibikes. Only a relatively short distance in SOMA and way faster. When I went south to the tech campuses, I brought my own bike on the train.

There are a few bikers that cause problems. I was driving in Palo Alto yesterday and a cyclist insisted on using the car lane instead of a perfectly good bike lane.

cloudwizard··on 42% of California’s STEM Workforce Hails from Outside the U.S
In US HS, the grades are going up but the world rankings are dropping. Our kids are not being prepared to be competitive.

https://www.nsf.gov/nsb/sei/edTool/data/highschool-08.html FYI - It may not look like much on the graph but the US is 2 years behind the top rankers.

cloudwizard··on 42% of California’s STEM Workforce Hails from Outside the U.S
I was CTO at 2 startups during the first Internet boom. I was getting resumes from janitors that were offering to be trained.

I had to hire most of the teams from Canada.

cloudwizard··on Remove United from your flight results
My story about United was when I was flying from Vancouver to SFO. For some reason, we could not land at SFO so we ended up in Oakland. I said fine. Let me off and I will catch a cab.

They said that the plane was too big for Oakland. We sat on the runway for 2 hours then flew back to Vancouver with nothing put warm coke. By the time we got to Vancouver, it was late so so all airport and hotel food was closed. We had vouchers but nothing available to spend it on.

Of course they lied about the plane being too large, another airline flew the same plane to Oakland regularly. i had to spam fax their customer support line to get vouchers.

cloudwizard··on Robots Aren’t Killing the American Dream
You are only talking about recent history. Historically, the vast majority of humanity lived in abject poverty. I expect the vast majority of new jobs to be low skilled, low pay jobs like cleaning the robots. or gig economy where people are paid by the minute and screwed over by Uber like companies.
cloudwizard··on Should gifted students go to a separate school?
Cognitive elite or financial elite. The rich get to send their kids to private schools. Smart poor kids get locked into mediocre public schools with reducing standards. Rich parents pass on their wealth at a lower tax rate.

Being smart is not a guarantee of success so we should make it harder so the less intelligent do not suffer any disadvantage.

cloudwizard··on Should gifted students go to a separate school?
It does accelerate inequality. The answer is to make sure we are all equal.

To solve this problem, we should not allow the special Nike sports camps because I do not make as much as a basketball player as an NBA player. We need to equalize all opportunity at the lowest common denominator. Of course the US would never see another gold medal in the Olympics.

Gifted students do not require you to repeat the same things as often. By forcing them to go at the same pace as other students, you bore them and stunt their growth.

cloudwizard··on Should gifted students go to a separate school?
For some, the problem is the class is too slow. The slow classes are CREATING the problem kids.
cloudwizard··on Should gifted students go to a separate school?
The problem is the entire class is geared to the slower kids. Since the faster kids learn the entire year's work in the first month or prior to the beginning of the year, the only thing they learn is how to deal with slower kids or amuse themselves quietly. My son read most of the fiction in his elementary school before I took him out to go to a private school.
cloudwizard··on Robots Are Taking Over Oil Rigs
Those are very high paying jobs. It is very unlikely that the displaced workers will make anywhere close to that.
cloudwizard··on Bootstrapping a SaaS Startup from Scratch
I agree with almost everything except advertising on FB and Twitter. I have worked at several startups that had ZERO return on thousands of advertising on FB. Our Google ads cost more but had an actual return. There is a reason that they cost more.
cloudwizard··on China won't be luring foreign tech talent any time soon
In the US, it is the same. I had no idea how my son was doing other than his teacher was lying to me. At the beginning of the year, it is impossible to do better than the middle. Not sure if the reasoning was so the children can show improvement? I knew he was doing better than the middle but how well he was doing was a mystery.
cloudwizard··on Apprenticeships: Useful Alternative, Tough to Implement

Many small cities do not have police academies. They just hire the graduates from other cities. This is similar to the problem of apprentices leaving.

cloudwizard··on Tech billionaires award $25M in Breakthrough prizes to top scientists

cloudwizard··on Homeschooling as a right, and a needed practical alternative
No, were at one of the top rated elementary public schools in the Bay Area. We still could not get a math team out of a school of hundreds even when I offered to pay for it. My son had to compete at Nationals by himself.
cloudwizard··on Homeschooling as a right, and a needed practical alternative
My problem is that schools standards are so low that my son was not learning anything there. He spent his days reading his way through the fiction section of the school library while the teachers focussed on the kids that were behind. If he was learning science, math or anything, I would have been happy.
cloudwizard··on UpLabs (YC W16) thinks designers and developers should hang out more
It seems to require twitter to login. I suppose I don't care if they spam my twitter but still it is annoying.
cloudwizard··on The problem in American education isn't dumb teachers, but dumb teacher training
Parents replacing school education works. My son went through 5 yrs of public education and learned almost nothing.

He learned in after school classes, at home, etc.

The problem was that public schools are focussed on underperforming kids and my son was above grade level so they did not bother to teach him. He did have a fun time at recess. Lots of time for reading fiction during class.

cloudwizard··on The problem in American education isn't dumb teachers, but dumb teacher training
American education is not designed to maximize student performance. As soon as a child meets the minimum, they are ignored. All the effort goes into improving the performance of the underperforming kids.

no child left behind = no child does really well

Involved parents replace school. They act as the real teachers. They pay for after school classes where the child will do all the real learning.

The US education does what it is designed to do. Help as many underperforming kids as it can. The problem is that it claims to help all kids which it is not actually designed to do.

If the US wants higher performing students, it needs to change the design. More education of gifted students will bring the average up. Higher standards will raise the minimum bar that the schools try to reach.

I have 2 kids and I treated one of the top elementary schools in SV as a daycare.

cloudwizard··on Request For Research: Basic Income
Start with reducing the costs of basic needs. Shelter - micro apts, container based Lots of regulations make this problematic in short term.

Food - Basic nutritious food should be cheaper. Currently, cheap food is not nutritious or that cheap. Even Soylent costs $2.83 and many do not consider that food. A meal should cost less than $1. - 2 ways that I have been mulling * Automation for on demand food * Mass production of simple meals.
