cloudwizard··on Troubled welds on the Bay Bridge
The whole thing was a mess http://www.sacbee.com/2013/04/12/5338065/supplier-of-bay-bri...

The bolts made by an Ohio company broke and they maybe a danger to the bridge,

cloudwizard··on Google Invests in Satellites to Spread Internet Access
Their driverless car needs Internet to work. This will let you drive anywhere.
cloudwizard··on How the Asians Became White
I live in SV and my son competes in math and robotics competitions. I have never seen an African American at a competition. Robotics has more caucasians. Still below 50% but Bay Area skews Asian so hard to tell.

Elementary School Math competitions are almost completely SE Asian and South Asian. Maybe 2% Caucasian. Girls/boys are about 50/50 across Asians. Fewer Caucasian girls than boys but small sample size.

Just random observations.

cloudwizard··on Why is San Francisco public transportation so bad?
SF transit is poor partially because they have managed to make car movement so miserable that people feel compelled to use transit. By making all the alternatives worse, you can seem decent.

Compared to cities outside the US, it is a mess.

cloudwizard··on Facebook Ads don't suck
If you are advertising FB ad services, your conversion would obviously be higher in FB. The fact that it is only 63% better that Google Ads seems poor.

My experience with FB is that the conversion rate is essentially zero and limited by your ability to donate to FB.

cloudwizard··on Any female engineers in San Diego interested in showing my daughter their work?
You can win the robot game and it has no bearing on advancement. The key is the 3 interviews. In the robot design interview, the number of points for quality of engineering is low. Most of the points are in the show your work category. A better presentation of a poor design will score better than a poor presentation of a quality result.
cloudwizard··on Any female engineers in San Diego interested in showing my daughter their work?
Maybe HS First requires a lot of programming, the regular FIRST for 9-14 does not require any programming to advance. It is mainly focussed on presentation skills rather than technical skills.
cloudwizard··on Tesla Announces $1.6 Billion Convertible Notes Offering
This means that the law banning Tesla sales in Texas will be off the books in about 20 seconds.
cloudwizard··on Uber sued by family of six-year-old killed in San Francisco crash
Uber claims to be a platform like Ebay. When I buy something on Ebay, I pay the seller not Ebay.

When I get a ride on Uber, I pay Uber. Uber pays the driver. Uber cancelled the drivers account. They fired the driver. Uber is screwed. Luckily, they have a lot of money.

cloudwizard··on Facebook may lose 80% of users by 2017, say Princeton researchers
All the other social networks were growing right up until they didn't. They had a similar percentage of the online world.
cloudwizard··on Why Google isn't our Bell Labs
They may not be Bell labs but they are the closest that this generation has.
cloudwizard··on A "Hacker's" Guide to the Bay Area
What about the Peninsula? Close to SF but with sun and car friendly. Close to SV but easy drive to SF. Personally, I like being within an easy drive to SF but not be in SF.
cloudwizard··on Show HN: Bootstrap In Practice, my ebook for starters
I would have felt better about Ebook pricing if you included the kindle version. I keep my reference books on a kindle with a 2 month battery. My tablets are always out of power when I need them.
cloudwizard··on On Being Black in China
I grew up on the Canadian Prairie. The only black people in the entire city were part of the professional football team. At school, the few black kids were tall and very athletic. It may be a stereotype but it was real in my city.
cloudwizard··on Has the US become the type of nation from which you have to seek asylum?
That is a false decision as well as an unlikely result. False Positives are 1000x more likely than actual positives.

The more likely result is 100000's innocent Americans are placed on the no-fly list, thousands of innocent non-americans are waterboarded in Guantanimo, etc for each potential terrorist stopped.

Most terrorists are incompetent and would get stopped get good police work or fail because the bombs do not explode.

cloudwizard··on Hong Kong Baffled by Snowden’s Hideout
This brings up the idea that Snowden fled the US to a place that he felt would be more free.
cloudwizard··on Larry Page addresses PRISM
I have donated even before this. How about Google giving them say $10M to hold some people's feet to the fire?
cloudwizard··on Larry Page addresses PRISM
A nice $10M donation to the EFF would help me believe him.
cloudwizard··on Go 1.1 performance improvements
Rob Pike said that he believed that they could get similar performance enhancements in the next release. He was talking at Google I/O fireside chat on Go.
cloudwizard··on Ask HN: Google workers, sister is visiting S.J. Can she tour the Googleplex?
I was impressed by Spaceship one hanging in the lobby.
cloudwizard··on Why developers are leaving the Facebook platform
I agree. The amount of maintenance to fix bugs created by FB is insane.
cloudwizard··on Canadian Government Makes Call to Foreign Startups for New Startup Visa
If nobody goes to Canada, it does not cost them anything.
cloudwizard··on Web Framework Benchmarks
It would be nice to see raw Python like you have raw PHP. I would expect Django to perform very poorly unless you optimize it's caching.
cloudwizard··on What really happened at PyCon 2013
I had a great time at PyCon. My son who is 7 attended young coders and learned a lot. All the kids got Pi's too so now we have two Pi's to work on.

I did not even hear about the Twitter incident. I consider it a twitter incident and not real.

cloudwizard··on Google I/O 2013
Some of us have been loyal since it was just developer days at the GooglePlex.
cloudwizard··on The Worst-Run Big City in the U.S. – San Francisco (2009)
They both do a crappy job but Detroit does it more efficiently.
cloudwizard··on Google App Engine is Down
I would worry more about Heruku given that SalesForce is losing money.

http://techcrunch.com/2013/01/13/marc-benioff-has-swagger-bu...

Google is insanely profitable and uses GAE internally for a large number of products. It would take years to re-write and shut down GAE.

cloudwizard··on Linus Torvalds: Is Engadget really that stupid? Just corrupt? Trolling us all?
Amazon is exploring the idea of ad supported hardware. Ad supported content on the web has pretty much wiped out paid content. We will see if ad supported HW does better.

To call it predatory pricing is stupid.

If you leave prices high and keep Apple in business, you have to be concerned about their slow rate of innovation. Most of their innovation is figuring out how to extract more money from you. They are like Microsoft IE innovation. MS was really slow until the FREE Chrome and Firefox browsers started to take significant market share.

cloudwizard··on About today's App Engine outage
It makes more sense for GAE to potentially have cascading failures since they failover for you. AWS does not so it is less vulnerable.
