code_runner··on DOGE employees ordered to stop using Slack
"there are a lot of unsolved murders out there. aren't those people free? my client should be free too!"
code_runner··on DOGE employees ordered to stop using Slack
only because the courts stopped it
code_runner··on Humans have caused 1.5 °C of long-term global warming according to new estimates
Exactly. “It’s bad and you should feel bad and it can’t be fixed”

Well… ok I guess I won’t stress about it too much since I can’t change it? I was already powerless but now effort is futile.

I’d like a real straw I guess

code_runner··on FTC to launch investigation into Microsoft's cloud business
I feel like an example would just restate the sentence. “Company name tried to move but the migration was manual and there were fees of $X”.

What details do you want? Im not shocked to hear Microsoft acting a little poorly.

code_runner··on Maybe Bluesky has "won"
I’m torn here. I would personally use whatever was fun and interesting. Threads was immediately political and I assume bluesky is too.

It’s just a lot. Twitter will be awful. Bluesky will be a little over the top. I don’t know what’s happening in threads these days…

People want to yell into the void and don’t want to think about more than 140 characters… and there really isn’t a place for just easy going goofy fun

code_runner··on Docker Compose Isn't Enough
not every single system requires 100% uptime... some folks still use release windows for specific applications/hardware. I'd argue that most systems out there can support a release window.... and the overlap between "docker-compose works for us" and "we have release windows" is probably quite high.

We needed to do inference on remote machines stationed at random points across North America.... the machines had work to do depending on external factors that were rigidly scheduled. really easy to make upgrades, and the machines were _very_ beefy so docker-compose gave us everything we needed.... and since we shipped the data off to a central point regularly (and the data had a short shelf life of usability) we could wipe the machines and do it all again with almost no consequences.

I needed to coordinate a few small services and it did the trick beautifully

code_runner··on Docker Compose Isn't Enough
I've used it for both.... but for production only in extremely constrained/limited environments. Its every bit as stable as anything else... you can version the compose you deploy so rollbacks are easy, etc etc.

far more useful for development IMO, but when push comes to shove and you need a few things running together on a machine in the middle of nowhere with limited/unreliable internet access.... you can't do much better... a few volume mounts for durability and you're really in decent shape.

logs, networking, system health etc etc.... just all a few docker and docker-compose commands away

code_runner··on Trump wins presidency for second time
trump is running at least partially on a revenge-tour platform. his rhetoric is unlike anything else I've personally heard from another candidate on any side of the aisle.

I understand that we don't agree here and that we all view things that are said through a distorted lens... so you may feel that certain speech from one person isn't violent, but said by another person is.... and I clearly would flip that around.

Its a shame that things are the way they are, but hopefully we can all understand each other at some point and things are less polarized. Its pretty miserable to have calm and reasonable conversations about anything even broaching politics. Its just contributes to the echo chambers.

code_runner··on Trump wins presidency for second time
I don't know of a time in recent memory with "even keeled" republicans (at least beyond the Primary). Romney and McCain would be the last I'm aware of.

I'm confident that I've heard both sides saying exactly what you're saying though... and I remember many times that "the end of democracy" was around the corner.... and if such-and-such wins a race war is going to break out etc.

The rhetoric and post-election-dooming is always the same regardless of which side wins.

I pretty firmly believe that things like the economy, incumbents tendency to remain in power, and a party switch after hitting the term-limit are the biggest factors. What people actually say once the primaries are over just doesn't matter to most people. People will cherry-pick what they want to hear.

code_runner··on Trump wins presidency for second time
100% agree. No implementation details, just a setup for additional court cases... when we've seen that courts making decisions on reproductive rights doesn't count for too much.
code_runner··on Trump wins presidency for second time
my hope is that somehow, someway, somewhere.... there is a politician who will think twice about further stripping reproductive rights because of this. Or maybe even someone who will help expand. It is a popular position with wide support.... and hopefully that does mean something.

you've got to stay hopeful. votes do count, but a 60% threshold means a minority have more sway in this instance.

code_runner··on Trump wins presidency for second time
And that’s why you have to appeal to them all the more. You have to be able to understand and counteract messaging like this. Proof is in the pudding
code_runner··on Trump wins presidency for second time
FL had 57% in favor but needed 60 for an amendment to state constitution. Generally speaking it seems that this issue has popular support, which hopefully counts for something.
code_runner··on AWS and Azure Are at Least 4x–10x More Expensive Than Hetzner
This just in: use the tool that is most cost effective for your specific use case. There is no one-size-fits-all. More to come after this advertisement
code_runner··on Why don't we use awnings anymore (2022)
we just bought a house that came w/ some pretty old awnings. We wanted to rip them down at first but slowly evolved from "they're ugly" to "charming".

Our A/C bill over the summer was pretty competitive with our previous home which was half the size.

code_runner··on 'Shoe doping' changed marathon times in ways we still don't understand
Even still some people are going to just have natural attributes that make them more efficient, less injury prone etc.

If you take away Kipchoge’s shoes he’s still gonna be fast.

code_runner··on 'Shoe doping' changed marathon times in ways we still don't understand
Definitely a reasonable response. Yes, super shoes are equivalent to a fully mechanized leg that doesn’t exist. It’s basically like being Rosie the robot from the jetsons with wheels for feet. Can’t believe we let them get away with it.
code_runner··on 'Shoe doping' changed marathon times in ways we still don't understand
Exactly. The whole super shoe discourse is really tired at this point.

Shoes changed. Now all of the shoes have carbon plates. The athletes are still incredible… nobody is getting one of these shoes and becoming some super star overnight.

We let the athletes drink hyper specialized drink mixtures based on studying their sweat content and even adjusting the drinks for their perspiration level during the race.

The shoe foam and carbon plates sell more expensive shoes.

code_runner··on TypedDicts are better than you think
The irony of a typo in this meaningless and overly sensitive reply is hilarious
code_runner··on We're excited about our new roundabout
US here. There seems to be an obsession at the moment with adding roundabouts in my area. They don’t always fit where they are put. Some of them have a stop sign in the roundabout?

When asked why, the answer is reducing “points of conflict”, which is a static variable. There aren’t actually studies being done before or after to see if makes the flow of traffic better.

They are also adding them in walkable areas with the express intent of “traffic never stopping” which doesn’t go well with pedestrians crossing the street.

I think we can find better ways to spend money… including the salaries of the people dreaming up bizarre applications for these things.

code_runner··on Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-8 Max Experienced Dutch Roll
dutch babies are a pretty decent desert!
code_runner··on Stack Overflow and OpenAI are partnering
Over zealous moderation and the average age of a question/answer being like 8 years.

There are very few novel questions and the ones that are there use outdated apis.

code_runner··on Show HN: I made an app that helps you find where to stream movies and TV shows
This is unbelievably great. Already made use of it.
code_runner··on The Making of Django Reinhardt
If you aren't happy, or want to be happier, just put on some Django Reinhardt and sit back for a second.

The Joe Pass tribute album is also absolutely incredible.

Truly truly some amazing music.

code_runner··on Fairbuds: In-ear with replaceable batteries
microphones have failed for me in the past as well, though to be fair, apple gave me a free repair for one issue on their end.
code_runner··on Spotify demonetizes all tracks under 1k streams
That’s not quite what the article linked says. If anything is done it could be years. It’s also unclear if they have any price per stream in mind and how they even think it should be calculated on an ongoing basis.

Sounds pretty early stage

code_runner··on Lago, Open-Source Stripe Alternative, banks $22M in funding
Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t this how suse, red hat, databricks etc work? They offer useful open source tools and make money to sustain development by offering service around those tools.

I could be totally wrong but that is my understanding of some of these projects.

code_runner··on How Hertz’s bet on Teslas went sideways
in my experience getting to the car around 1am after a really long day on a last minute trip.... I didn't really have any trouble at all and car was fully charged. Most it honestly works about how you'd expect (pull down on the stalk to engage drive etc). Had enough charge to get me through my weekend without ever having to think about it.

Honestly, its not that much worse than my prius with the goofy shifter. Knowing what to do with the keycard was confusing until the screen lit up to show me

code_runner··on How Hertz’s bet on Teslas went sideways
I had an almost opposite experience and ended up buying a tesla a handful of months later when it was time for a car.

the UX was a bit of a pain at first and I didn't understand the regen braking, but I felt that I at least had menus instead of buttons with symbols in weird places. I have a theory that I'm not as good at remembering where my buttons are as other people because i've never thought twice about the buttons being on a screen instead.... I always have to glance at what i'm setting

All that said: I would never want to drive or own one of the teslas without the turn signal stalks on the steering wheel and all that.... just seems like asking for trouble

code_runner··on Amazon ditches 'just walk out' checkouts at its grocery stores
amazon is notorious for paying late night sketch comedy shows to make fun of them in order to promote their niche projects that only exist in a few cities.
