code_runner··on Swapping two Numbers without Temporary Variables
I tried to explain to a previous employer how much their little "brainteaser" test was turn off to legitimately talented engineers. I explained that everybody in town knows about the test and basically refuses to even entertain the company because of it.

Bear in mind this is a place building relatively simple web apps... standard line of business stuff. The test was questions like "how many words can you unscramble from these letters" etc.

A majority of the engineers felt the test meant you "knew you were working with smart people". A majority of the code was unmaintainable sludge. (though a few people were extremely talented)

I no longer work there.

code_runner··on Ask HN: What book changed your life?
This sounds super interesting. Did it have any impact on your own beliefs?
code_runner··on Show HN: A game that tests how well you know your local area
Love this! Works great on mobile. Awesome idea.
code_runner··on Please don't ask founders existential questions
I don't think we should have to play w/ kid gloves around founders. They aren't different from the rest of us.

I imagine there is a correlation between failed founders and "number of question categories deemed askable" that the founder has dreamed up.

code_runner··on Accused of cheating, marathon runner Frank Meza's life fell apart (2019)
ahhhh gotcha. Yeah, bad behaviors/instincts from all involved.
code_runner··on New cars make me want to Saab (2020)
I'm not sure how canonically-correct the author is trying to be.... as much as they're just drawing comparison to transformers in general.
code_runner··on New cars make me want to Saab (2020)
You're right... but as soon as you drive one of those saabs you realize just how wrong you actually are. Its the most beautiful ugly car I've ever had.
code_runner··on New cars make me want to Saab (2020)
the 2001 saab 9-3 turbo I got around 2007 was and is still my favorite car I've ever owned.

What is night mode and why did I use it all the time?

What is this CD? a tour of my own car... hosted by a jet fighter pilot and random disembodied female voice?

Where do I put the key? Oh, next to the gear box... like mid thigh. (the cd will tell you this is to avoid injuring your knee in an accident)

Wait, how do I remove the key? Shift to reverse? Well it won't go in reverse... oh pull up on gearbox skirt and THEN shift into reverse.

The windows rolled up and down unnecessarily fast. Faster than you're thinking.

I had little wipers on the headlights (so european!)

Its turbo suddenly died, taking the engine with it... but I would LOVE to own that car again.

code_runner··on Accused of cheating, marathon runner Frank Meza's life fell apart (2019)
There is outrage, stripping someone of their ill-gotten-titles etc... and then there is further shaming that person... all just to verify that they feel as badly as you want them to.
code_runner··on Accused of cheating, marathon runner Frank Meza's life fell apart (2019)
I agree that drug testing local races is overkill.... its easy to pick out the few dopers in a community because they ONLY do the small local races (and therefore are extremely limited in what prize money they can win).

People wanting to win that local level at all costs are definitely cheating the other clean/non-cheating athletes who would've been on a podium but the scope is limited to those in contention (though still wrong).

For the most part, people are competing against themselves and trying to get a qualifying time for another event or just set a PR.

code_runner··on Accused of cheating, marathon runner Frank Meza's life fell apart (2019)
I just think that the cons out weight the pros.

The professional runners are monitored so closely cutting is not a realistic option.... and they're the ones actually getting prize money... obviously they're tested for doping etc... Everything else is really just personal achievement... and if you're cheating at that level you're just depriving yourself of legitimate accomplishment. It isn't a race organizers responsibility to keep you from doing so....

When it comes to something w/ limited availability like a Boston etc... that is different.... if you cut a course (or cheated via other means) in order to submit a qualifying time you're legitimately affecting others as well. I have to admit it does get murky here and there.

code_runner··on Accused of cheating, marathon runner Frank Meza's life fell apart (2019)
haha yes. I mean "if you run fast, you ran fast". Can't be taken from you if you're out of shape now... if you're in great shape but didn't run fast... you didn't run fast.
code_runner··on Accused of cheating, marathon runner Frank Meza's life fell apart (2019)
As a runner I love that running is a true meritocracy. Sure, some people can afford better recovery tools etc but performance is the true test.

Someone cheating sucks, but nobody deserves to be mobbed and totally ruined.

It’s usually people at the “local elite” level as well. The pros who actually make a living running could never get away with it… it’s just people being vain, who in most cases have legitimate talent but feel so much pressure to perform.

Nobody is getting rich by cheating. They are primarily cheating themselves. Driving them into the ground helps nobody.

code_runner··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
Investing time your health is a very worthwhile investment.
code_runner··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
I’ve already commented about running but I would also recommend looking for a registered dietician. Some have a sports/performance focus but athletes are the most likely to seek them out… 99% will work with you if exercise is not a goal.

They will help you attain sustainable healthy weight loss. Most will actually ensure you are eating ALL of your meals + snacks in the proper portions (it’s not as restrictive as you think).

I would be extremely cautious of skipping any meals with regularity. You only make your body hold onto calories that way. A dietician can help you learn to give your body what it needs

code_runner··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
Exercise is the most effective for me. Find a running coach in your area (look for run clubs that have all levels) and usually they are led by a capable coach… especially if they’re an established club.

It can start really small… maybe having a goal for a 5k would help give you a goal…

I don’t know about a runners high, but pushing myself and getting better… setting and beating goals (failing along the way of course). That’s the addictive part.

In no time at all you’ll be able to cover 5+ miles maybe 4-5 days a week. There is literally no wrong way to do it. Walk/run, run too fast, run easy all the time…

it’s empowering to be able to walk out the door, pick a distance, and do it while everyone else is asleep.

code_runner··on SPAs Were a Mistake
For me, things like react and vue are DEDICATED to the front end. They are great for building UIs and have great ergonomics.

Backend frameworks that I LOVE (asp.net, laravel) have templating languages that feel like an afterthought, and passing data to them sucks (I usually have to redeclare what data they receive somewhere, or it’s entirely a dynamic paradigm) editor support is ok AT BEST… all of the sudden part of my app is dynamic c#, which c# isn’t good at.

My choice of backend should be absolutely divorced from my choice of front end. I can write an api in node, c#, go, etc and I don’t have to totally change how my front end works.

And splitting state between front end and backend (as mentioned throughout the comments here) is awful and error prone. There is a reason large scale apps aren’t using vanilla js or jquery and hand rolling state management etc.

It’s all about the size of the app, complexity, division of labor (I can hire a front end specialist who spends 70-80% of their time on front end)… the only goal isn’t JUST performance but if you do it right you get that too.

code_runner··on Solid.js feels like what I always wanted React to be
have you had any success using the useReducer hook totally outside of redux? I feel like its bulky for certain operations but I still haven't found that "perfect" use-case for it yet that makes it click for me
code_runner··on Solid.js feels like what I always wanted React to be
I just dove back into react after a while in vue and deep in some backend systems.

I love the new ergonomics (hooks, useEffect, redux tools) but I definitely hit the exact issue OP mentions almost immediately.

I don’t feel that the solution react provides is too out there, but agree it could be better. The react ecosystem still makes it worth the one or two “could be betters” for me.

code_runner··on Solid.js feels like what I always wanted React to be
I love vue’s concept of computeds. It makes me think back to knockoutjs when things felt like they “just worked” as long as you knew where the ES5 footguns were.

It’s nice to have a concept “ground truth” in data and props and then computeds that sort of tie it all together.

code_runner··on Playdate Software Development Kit is now available for free to all
I haven’t heard of this device and thought It felt like something from teenage engineering… awesome that they’re involved.

A full blown sdk for a device like this seems like a blast. Side projects/hobby coding can get boring/stale sometimes but this seems like a blast

code_runner··on Almond.css: Collection of CSS styles to make simple websites look nicer
For better or worse (I think better) a little polish and minimal effort gives a huge amount of credibility/trustworthiness to a website.

Projects like this are even trying to make it so easy you don’t have to do much of anything.

“I’d like my website to not use this” is an odd criticism. You aren’t being made to use it in any case.

code_runner··on Inside Pornhub
In a few generations when some stigmas go away and we are slightly closer to this mythical society… distributing personal moments of others, especially in compromising positions will still be wrong.

So now, and in the future, we need to punish the victimizers.

code_runner··on Inside Pornhub
You’re really standing up a straw man here and I’m not convinced you’re even winning against it.
code_runner··on Inside Pornhub
It sounds as if they’ve learned otherwise through first hand experience at this point.

Seems like a way to shock the people actually putting real effort into vetting a candidates resume/credentials.

Maybe a warning that it’s nsfw would cause less extreme reactions.

code_runner··on Simple passwordless authentication for web projects
The first app I used that implements this is a great little campsite reservation app. I usually come there from an email notification anyways and I find it much less annoying than fumbling for my phone to dig out a 2fa code.

code_runner··on Event-driven access to my home after a run
I run 5 days a week. I run with a group ~3 minutes from home, but for years ran from my front door.

My phone is too bulky, I have a spare home key. I just… take the key with me.

I installed a keypad lock on my last home and that was great but the batteries died once and only had enough juice to lock me out.

I really like projects like this but for some reason this one seems silly… hopefully it was at least fun to do
