code_runner··on Rivian software update bricks infotainment system, fix not obvious
it didn't initiate it, I did. I should've waited like..... 30 seconds or until I was stopped quite honestly. I'm fully aware of how the vehicle operates and I would consider myself solely responsible for initiating the reboot.

That said, it was weird that the blinkers didn't work, but it may be that the sound in the cabin wasn't playing and the blinkers were just fine... and in hindsight thats probably accurate.

Point being, I picked literally the worst place to do that reboot. I would consider the need for the reboot in that situation to be on tesla maybe, but the choice to perform it when I did was solely on me.

I dislike elon as much as the next person (i like to think more, but some people definitely me beat).... but the car is solid... i just never thought i'd say "i need to reboot my car's computer"

code_runner··on Rivian software update bricks infotainment system, fix not obvious
I had to do this once or twice (its very very infrequent in my experience) and one time it was genuinely terrifying, as I had lost blinkers etc where a few interstates all intersect and merge etc.

I still do love the car though.... but a very sketchy moment that I shouldn't have brought on myself while driving in that situation.

code_runner··on Rivian software update bricks infotainment system, fix not obvious
out of morbid curiosity.... how long did it take to ssh into and fix all of those servers? I imagine even automating a fix (if possible) would still take a good amount of time.
code_runner··on Google offered Netflix a sweetheart deal to pay just 10 percent on Google Play
And this is why Apple is being sued and google isn’t. Google at least will work with you I suppose
code_runner··on NYC's new rat-killing weapon is wildly successful – for now
even if we're talking densely populated areas, aren't cans just going to be better no matter what? The alternative is literally throwing plastic bags of trash into the street. I adore NYC and I look for every excuse I can to go. I understand that it has very unique issues that few, if any, cities on earth have to contend with. This one just seems pretty addressable. I need a youtube series or podcast about how it got to this point, whats been tried, and why it failed so I can fully comprehend it.
code_runner··on NYC's new rat-killing weapon is wildly successful – for now
when walking through some neighborhoods (parts of park slope) i saw almost exclusively trash cans at every residence. At any rate, to say its impossible to implement trash cans just sounds nuts. I'm sure it truly is complicated, but not viable? I don't think so.
code_runner··on Is AI the next crypto? Insights from HN comments
I completely agree that there is no relationship at all between the two. Hucksters are gonna huckster no matter what the medium is.

If you want to ask "are LLMs the next metaverse" or something.... implying LLMs are over-promising on their utility and the hype is all driven by the companies controlling the tech.... even that is a stretch but makes more sense.

Anyone selling you AGI, or "make money on youtube by typing a sentence into this prompt" is probably a crypto scammer who found a new group of people to scam.

code_runner··on New models and developer products
Summarizing large documents. Finding relationships between two (or more) documents. Building a set of points bridging the gap between the documents. Correcting malformed text data.

Not everything is just data in a database or some structured format. Sometimes you have blobs of text from a user, or maybe you ran whisper on an audio/video file and now you just have a transcript blob… it’s never been easier to automate all of this stuff and get accurate results.

You can even have humans in the loop still to protect against hallucinations, or use one model to validate another (ask GPT to correct or flag issues with a whisper transcript)

code_runner··on Dating apps lose their luster with college students
It’s interesting to track college kids for dating app viability. They are surrounded by their peers constantly. They would be far less likely (hypothetically) to struggle to meet people in real life.
code_runner··on GM's Cruise alleged to rely on human operators to achieve "autonomous" driving
Infrastructure cost could be considered as well. Like it or not but not every part of the world has the same desire nor infrastructure for mass public transport.

Not saying it’s right or wrong, just stating the other half of the equation

code_runner··on GM's Cruise alleged to rely on human operators to achieve "autonomous" driving
Sounds like the market works and you can easily find the cars you’re looking for that last “forever”
code_runner··on OpenAI Preparedness Challenge
I don't even think robotics are the primary thing to be concerned with. There would be a whole slew of additional hardware problems to solve.... There is a TON that can be done outside the physical world that is probably far more damaging
code_runner··on I think GCP is better than AWS (2020)
bigquery is a joy to use! I really don't hate the editor in the browser either.
code_runner··on Who profits most from America's baffling health-care system?
After working in consulting you find out:

- there are companies dedicated to detecting “missing” treatment codes based on a patients chart

- companies dedicated to detecting hospitals gouging insurance companies, and deciding which instances to push back on and which to just ignore

- a whole slew of companies that essentially make awful old tooling “online enabled” by just syncing troubling amounts of data to salesforce

The companies making tons of money live in the margins and you’ll never see them. They can make one tiny thing more efficient and the hospitals are so poorly managed they’ll just add more contractor to the mix and pass the cost on.

There are no rules for hospital management and administrative reporting etc. it’s all a giant shit show

code_runner··on Redis Insight: GUI App for Redis
It’s been a little while, but I believe just running it via docker worked really well also without any forms etc
code_runner··on GPT-4 vision prompt injection
If anyone’s plan for consuming a 3rd party api, especially an LLM, is to blindly pump in inputs and blindly reproduce the outputs… they’re gonna have a pretty rough time.

I get all of my syntax highlighting, autocomplete, integrated terminal, test panels etc in vscode. Vim is great too with the right configuration and tweaking.
code_runner··on AI Graphics at JetBrains
Certain bits of Python were red, but not because of an error… it was just the color scheme.
code_runner··on AI Graphics at JetBrains
I would pick vscode over any jetbrains tool for absolutely any language. I do all of my Java, scala, and python in vscode. Use whatever tools you like (that’s why there are so many) but vscode is genuinely good for just about everything.

I can’t bring myself to fight with jetbrains insane configurations (what the hell is a facet?!?)… and some very questionable syntax highlighting.

code_runner··on AI Graphics at JetBrains
I guess you’ll have to try it again. If it’s been a few years I’d definitely say to give it a shot… that’s a lot of time for things to improve

code_runner··on Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and the Risk of Dementia
I just looked up these numbers and I’m shocked at how much alcohol consumption can be considered moderate.

I hadn’t seen this info before… thanks for mentioning this!

code_runner··on Frasier Fantasy
The new season is better than I expected (so far) though not anywhere near the original. I think they may actually settle into something good!
code_runner··on Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and the Risk of Dementia
The quality of this website does not give me a lot of confidence in whatever content lives in the narrow window I can see on mobile.

I don’t know if I have adhd… it seems like the definition of adhd is almost constantly expanding. Whatever the case, I hope dementia becomes treatable or curable in my lifetime. My grandfather suffered with it and it was awful.

code_runner··on Frasier Fantasy
like a lot of shows from that era (in my opinion), you may end up needing to push through at the beginning... but it does settle in relatively quickly. there are almost no bad episodes in the entire run.
code_runner··on About half of Bandcamp employees have been laid off
can you follow up on the recreating popular songs and how spotify wronged taylor swift?
code_runner··on Stack Overflow is laying off another 28%
I don’t understand how redundancies can be carried out respectfully. Redundancies suck. Someone will always be on the list that didn’t expect to be and quite honestly shouldn’t be.

People will say they know the right answer and some aspect that helps them would’ve been considered (tenure, peer feedback, # of commits). It always sucks no matter what.

code_runner··on Apple Plans Smaller, Lighter Vision Headset; Meta Works on Cheaper Quest 3
I firmly believe this will suffer the same fate as 3d tv. Even sports couldn’t save the 3d tv.

I think the most that people would ever consider would be a HUD with some walking directions or something.

I could be wrong and it ends up being the biggest thing since the PC, but I just don’t understand even the most optimistic takes outside of cool gaming experiences.

code_runner··on Meta pitches EU to charge a $10 subscription for ad-free Facebook and Instagram
I think the alternative is that creators/influencers do even more ad-content on their accounts... which ends up with non-paying users getting inundated with ads + ads baked into content. Only an issue if the subscription model gains traction I suppose.

Some businesses (spotify, pandora) would kill to have the success with ads that meta/facebook has had.... and I'm sure during the downturn at the beginning of the year metabook would've killed for the consistent subscription revenue... so really interesting to see where this goes.

code_runner··on Weird A.I. Yankovic: a cursed deep dive into the world of voice cloning
I know what you mean. Its more noticeable (imo) on the Michael one.... but its definitely in there. I think the pitch correction is to blame for a bit of the weirdness.
