codecutter··on Delta CEO wants U.S. to put unruly passengers on 'no-fly' list
Instead of asking government to have no-fly list, what doesn't each airline have its own list? They are private businesses and should be able to decide their customers, just like customers can refuse to do business with certain companies.
codecutter··on Ask HN: Why is spam email still a thing?
I wished there would be some service like 'Lenny for phone spam' that will automatically keep on replying to spam emails and waste their time and resources.
codecutter··on Ask HN: What's the easiest way to make a living with $600k in cash?
You asked for easiest way, so I would suggest moving to a country with low cost of living. You can always use your software development skills for remote work.
codecutter··on Museum of Plugs and Sockets
This is an unusual topic for a museum. I found it rather interesting. Thanks for all your effort.
codecutter··on Dogs distinguish human intentional and unintentional action
Beautiful story.

I want my children to have a dog Or may be two or three They'll learn from them more easily Than they will learn from me. A dog will teach them how to love, And have no grudge or hate I'm not so good at that myself But a dog will do it straight I want my children to have a dog, To be their pal and friend So they may learn that friendship Is faithful to the end. There never yet has been a dog That learned to double cross Nor catered to you when you won Then dropped you when you lost.

codecutter··on Open-source Dropbox client, with multi-account, no-device-limit and M1 support
I left Dropbox when they stopped supporting Linux client. I didn't want to go to either Google or Microsoft, so I went with Mega.nz and I am very happy with them. I pay around $30/year for 400 GB storage. (most likely a grandfathered plan, not sure of current pricing).
codecutter··on Open letter: Ban surveillance-based advertising
I read the open letter. I learned about businesses that support user privacy and I will be supporting them with my wallet. (already use Mailfence and Duckduckgo )
codecutter··on Mark Cuban-backed banking app Dave to go public in $4 bln SPAC merger
The reason I use a local brick-and-mortar bank is to get access to a safe deposit box. Besides banking is free as well. ( No fee for account maintenance, ATM, free checks, free Zelle payment to friends etc.)
codecutter··on Ask HN: What lessons did you learn from your best or worst colleagues?
Please don't play it emotionally and report it to HR. Folks from HR are there to take care of the manager and employer. Such a step could be suicidal.
codecutter··on I’ve had the same supper for 10 years
Thank you for your comment and the video link. I really enjoyed it.

The delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe

codecutter··on I made a mobile app for my significant other and she won't use it
Why settle for a dollar? If you are willing to make the source code FLOSS, I will donate $10 to you. :)
codecutter··on U.S. Supreme Court rebuffs Facebook appeal in user tracking lawsuit
Any website that is not behind a pay wall or does not require me to login to read the content, I would consider it to be a public site.
codecutter··on My bank sent me 64 copies of the same debit card
I fail to understand why anyone would keep such important documents in a fast food bag.
codecutter··on Donate Unrestricted
Sorry if I sound harsh, but I wonder if such a donation will be purely to satisfy one's ego. We give donation because we believe in the cause and feel good by donating. When I give donation, I give it unrestricted and sometimes even if it is not tax deductible.
codecutter··on Donate Unrestricted
As a donor, I would appreciate that. It will help me decide whether to give money to charity A vs. charity B. There will always be someone willing to accept the donation.

PS: AFAIK, Religious institutions in USA are exempt from Form-990 so a donor wouldn't anyway know where the money is going.

codecutter··on Free for Developers
Do you know how they detect virtual cards? I have seen some scripts which detect whether card number is valid CC or not. But never heard of validation of virtual cards.
codecutter··on Free for Developers
I have Citibank DoubleCash card and I can generate virtual card number for it. Typically it is for one-time use because the expiration date generated is for next month.
codecutter··on Euro privacy watchdog calls for end of targeted advertising
The problem starts when your "targeted" advertising will send flyers to only those homes where both husband/wife work and have little free time; or households that have very young children or household with single parent or the household that owns very old lawnmower that was repaired recently etc. Then your "targeted advertising" starts charging more from households that have only senior citizens etc.etc.
codecutter··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
Try Google voice. https://voice.google.com/rates

I call my family for 1 cent per minute.

codecutter··on Things I Learnt in 2020
I was born and brought up in Mumbai, Maharashtra and Marathi is my native language.

Ek number was commonly used in my childhood days in Mumbai and it means "First class" or "Classic". Typical uses: ek number joke, ek number daaru (daaru = alcohol, liquor), ek number maal (First class, good looking, hot girl), ek number vada pav (classic food dish) etc.

codecutter··on You have the right to record police in public, federal court rules
It is still riskier job than a cashier or software developer. OP's comment about police compensation is irrelevant, IMO.

Talking about risk, would you play a Russian roulette for $100? If you win, you will make $100 in less than a minute, far better hourly pay-rate than a police officer or a pilot.

codecutter··on You have the right to record police in public, federal court rules
The county officials would not remove traffic cameras, so citizens had to put it on voting ballet in Houston and force the county to remove them.

codecutter··on You have the right to record police in public, federal court rules
Comparing compensation of cashiers and police officers is unfair in my opinion. Police officers risk dying in line of duty. Would you play Russian Roulette for say $100k? I wouldn't.
codecutter··on How I Collected a Debt from an Unscrupulous Merchant
Your comment made me look up what IMNSHO means. That was pretty interesting by itself. :)
codecutter··on Due to a problem with AWS, many "smart" vacuums or doorbells will stop working
They need to put fail-safe mechanism such that washer spinning will stop the moment someone opens the washer door.
codecutter··on YouTube will now show ads on all videos even if creators don’t want them
I was grandfathered from Google music family plan for same old price of $15 + tax. I am not aware of current price for new subscribers.
codecutter··on YouTube will now show ads on all videos even if creators don’t want them
Exactly my thought. As much as I hate advertising and Google business practices, I would rather pay to avoid advertisements if that is an option. For $15/month family plan for 6 users, I find it to be a reasonable deal.
codecutter··on Show HN: Please-unsubscribe.com – fwd emails to unsubscribe from marketing
I am not going to be so kind to folks who send try to send me spam.
codecutter··on Show HN: Please-unsubscribe.com – fwd emails to unsubscribe from marketing
I called 1-888-5-OPTOUT and told all 3 credit agencies to stop sending me pre-approved offers. Since then, junk postal mail is almost zero.
codecutter··on Show HN: Please-unsubscribe.com – fwd emails to unsubscribe from marketing
I have simple solution for that. If the newsletter doesn't stop and keeps coming, I would just cancel my email address amzn1@mydomain and open another one amzn2@mydomain. If the spam persists, I just move business elsewhere. As simple as that.
