And I'm just going to link the obligatory link to the video of a Viggen landing, reversing, turning around and taking off again, because that's just how cool the Viggen was.

codeduck··on Meta Security Researcher's AI Agent Accidentally Deleted Her Emails
I spent an hour on Friday restraining myself from swearing at Kiro, which was loudly and sarcastically convinced that the "network" issues it was having talking to a local MCP server were due to a misconfigured proxy server and it wanted to open a JIRA ticket against the team responsible to fix it.

It was only when I provided it the logs that it believed my contemplationr that it was it, itself, which was at fault for not correctly adding an Authorization header to the requests it was generating.

These things are like teenagers who just discovered Ayn Rand. They're infuriating.

codeduck··on AI Agent Has Root
how is this any different to naively running a webserver or database server or, in fact, anything as yourself?

People are forgetting the basic rules of operating systems. Do not run sensitive programs as a user account - especially not as a root account!

Doesn't it?

The technology exists to build it. The pipelines exist to populate it. The marketing engine exists to leverage it for targeted delivery of content.

And yet, somehow, nobody's built it?

How sure are you of that?

codeduck··on Show HN: 1667, a terminal UI for writing fiction with language models
> It seems that the only people who are hating on this aren't even writers themselves.

I will gladly be the counter-example, then. I program. I'm grumpy. I also, however, write fiction - and have for well over twenty years now.

Writing is a skill I acquired and honed through hard work, diligence, and practice. I would no more cede "creative" control of my stories to a LLM than I would load a MIDI track onto my piano and claim the piano's perfect rendition as my own.

But feel free to characterise I - and others - as "grumpy coders who probably don't write".

The reaction is not because the OP used AI to create software.

The reaction is because OP's software facilitates the outsourcing of creative writing to a agentic content mill, and many HN users take issue with that.

AI feels like a Faustian bargain that has been struck on my behalf by others who do not know me.

codeduck··on US vs. UK Baby Names 2025: The Biggest Top Differences Visualized
why are you resubmitting something you submitted 78 days ago?
codeduck··on London Underground begins scanning passengers' faces
Believe it or not, the UK already does this to people for whom there is no plausible asylum claim. The problem, if you want to think about it as such, is that the UK currently believes in treating potential asylum claimants as such rather than automatically labeling them as criminals.
codeduck··on London Underground begins scanning passengers' faces
Believe it or not, they actually already do this.
codeduck··on Let’s take apart your phone
I was thinking earlier that a traditional spring-based pocket watch seems far more intricate to me than a wodge of glass and silicon. I know the phone is far more complex, but intricate? Nah.

Bad news, budget cuts mean we can afford a flounder with a paper fan. His name's Steven and he lives about twenty yards east of Lulworth Cover, but we reckon he's okay to commute to work.

Why would no local cache on a laptop hold the IP address for the api endpoint if it's already open in the browser and being posted to?
codeduck··on Anthropeum – Where in the world, and when, does this human artifact belong?
I studied History of Art in school - long ago admittedly, but it was clearly helpful in identifying differences between eastern and western portraiture. It was, however, far less useful at helping me identify artifacts from Central Africa and Mesoamerica.

I used no external resources since that would defeat the purpose of this.

Given that, I placed in the 64th percentile based on a couple of really accurate matches (renaissance sculpture, fnar) and a lot that weren't terribly wrong.

codeduck··on Show HN: Managing on-premise servers without Kubernetes
I have to ask why someone would choose this over ansible, ssh, and a proper monitoring and metrics stack.

Something like this allows unconstrained config drift with no audit trail.
