Feeling like contacting me?

email - hn (at) femto (dot) host discord - Codefined#8017

I'm pretty open to talking about anything.

codefined··on The internet already lost its neutrality
Disagree, factual information is often hard to come by on "success", since it depends on what metrics you use.

Opinion pieces, clearly marked[0], are probably better than the alternative of nothing.

codefined··on E-Bikes Offer Entry-Level Electric Transportation
Banning all electric bikes seems a little over the top though, surely? The same argument can be made that all trucks should be banned because some have been tampered with to exceed the max speed limit.
codefined··on SSH vs. OpenVPN for Tunneling
Both of the comments about VPN support within SSH seem to be heavily downvoted with no reason why. As far as I can see, their points are correct:

> OpenSSH has built-in TUN/TAP support using -w<local-tun-number>:<remote-tun-number>. Here, a layer 3/point-to-point/ TUN tunnel is described. It is also possible to create a layer 2/ethernet/TAP tunnel.[0]

Just with invalid terminology (s/ssh/OpenSSH) and the likelihood of the added slowdown mentioned in the article.

codefined··on From Markdown to remote code execution in Atom
Adding this[0] list of languages that compile to JavaScript to the list. There seem so many that no matter your taste in syntactical sugar there should be something for you.

codefined··on Meg Whitman to Step Down as HPE CEO
It's already dumped a lot of it's stuff to Micro Focus.
codefined··on Cryptocurrency Is the Next Frontier in the Quest to Abolish Cash Bail
> again after assaulting someone.

They haven't been to court yet, they might be innocent.

codefined··on Tesla Is a 'Hotbed for Racist Behavior,' Worker Claims in Suit
I don't know, it might make the single target bigger. But monopolisation almost always hurts the consumer. At least where there were a million little crappy news sources, there were a few good ones.
codefined··on Vault 8 – Source code and analysis for CIA software projects
In the commercial sector I seem to find myself spending a significant amount of my time working on projects that were started many decades ago that have just been improved over time.

I honestly wouldn't be too surprised if a lot of these applications were used today with relatively little change.

codefined··on Hashcat – advanced password recovery
If you have enough of the bitcoin wallet, cracking the rest is possible with todays resources.

If he was able to crack any random bitcoin wallet, I don't think he'd be sharing it on this website.

codefined··on No, of that I'm innocent
Hell, studies have said anywhere between 2% to 90%[0] of rape reports are false, but telling that a rape is false / true is _incredibly_ hard due to it basically being "he says" vs. "she says".

codefined··on 75% decline over 27 years in total flying insect biomass in protected areas
When 75% of _all_ flying insect biomass is lost, that's not just wax / wane. Considering the only difference in the past 2 years vs. the other thousands of years that insects have survived is human intereference, doesn't this suggest that we have complete control over this change?
codefined··on NASA's Van Allen Probes Spot Man-Made Barrier Shrouding Earth
> "remove excess radiation from the near-Earth environment"

I feel like I'm hideously misunderstanding this, but could this be used to help slow down global warming?

codefined··on iOS 11's Misleading "Off-Ish" Setting for Radios Is Bad for User Security
This change would be absolutely fine to me if it were communicated to the user in any way whatsoever. The fact that I can upgrade and have no idea the behaviour unless I happen to read an EFF blogpost in the few hours it appears on HN isn't acceptable.

Note how they even use privacy as one of the main (at least, in my opinion) selling point for Apple devices[0] ("Every Apple product is designed from the ground up to protect that information.").

codefined··on Catalonia’s Independence Vote Descends into Chaos and Clashes
To be fair, when police are shutting down a not insignificant number of polling stations, it seems justified to allow people to vote at any polling station and not just the one that is potentially shut down.
codefined··on Guitar browser game with a real guitar
Are you sure it isn't? "Heroine" exists as a term specifically for a female hero.
codefined··on Folding Promises in JavaScript
Sorry, in the sense of being identical to the original code in the linked post (reduce), not the comment.
codefined··on Folding Promises in JavaScript

    let accumulator = 0
    for (let item of array) {
      const value = await item
      // your code here
    }
Is identical, doesn't use 'cool' reduce features but is much easier to read in my opinion.
codefined··on Spanish police raid .Cat domain name registry offices
Never heard of a case where someone has been arrested for saying anything that isn't aimed at causing vioelnce. The UK government _do_ allow a lot of open debate on political topics (and every other type of topic) as long as it doesn't threaten peoples health.
codefined··on China Bans Bitcoin Executives from Leaving Country, Miners “Preparing for Worst”
Can you give any more details on "China's economy is crashing"? I must admit I haven't heard anything negative about their economy, thought it was on the up and up.
codefined··on Sublime Text 3.0
I think values like that are more often used by advertisers, instead of software engineers honestly. It's incredibly tricky to measure the increase of start-up time as a percentage since it matters so much on hardware, what files you have open, if it's cached, etc.

Using a single percentage would probably be more misleading than just saying "significantly improved".

codefined··on Android 8.0 Oreo, thoroughly reviewed
Why not just restrict it to user-initiated events that can exit or enter full screen? Similar to how you have to press a button to enter full screen mode. It seems to make sense to do the same thing to exit, or other various actions.
codefined··on The Netherlands has become an agricultural giant
Most farmers do literally bash the animals before slaughtering them[0]

codefined··on Studying how Firefox can collect additional data in a privacy-preserving way
Then don't send the correct source IP address, with simple statistics gathering like this I hardly expect they require a response. It would mean there would be no personal data whatsoever.
codefined··on Show HN: Appster – Free Bootstrap 4 App Landing Page Template
Since the actual size is tiny, tried using webpack to combine some of the resources. Saved ~40% of that size with minification and dead code removal, and saving that many requests meant that it takes a tenth of the time to load.

Might recommend you try it too for releases, as a lot of people might not know how & will use this as is.

codefined··on Draw.io releases open source desktop versions
Using ~110MB for me on Windows. Considering you can get 8GB of RAM for ~£54[0], running this application is costing me roughly 61p worth of RAM when open. Or, looking at it a different way, on a modest system I can run 720 versions of this program.

Honestly in an age where memory is so cheap I'd much rather have an Electron app for every conceivable thing (which take a fraction of the time to create) as opposed to fully fledged applications that only do a few things.

E: Having the tab open in Chrome appears to use more memory for me[0], perhaps because of the extensions I use?

codefined··on Trump CEO Strategy Council Is Said to Disband After Exodus
Not a fan of Trump, also not a fan of this news. With less information he's likely to make worse and worse decisions.
codefined··on TunnelBear Publishes Security Audit
OpenVPN is free and I use it pretty often. Supports both CLI & GUI. Would highly recommend it as an excellent client.
codefined··on TunnelBear Publishes Security Audit
It appears to be down from 3 criticals and 3 high, not 1 high?
codefined··on F.lux major update
Yeah, I've had this version for a while on Linux. I believe it was just the Windows build that was behind a few months.
codefined··on Subscription is the only way to do software
A bunch of online games have tried this, some of the most popular ones include World of Warcraft, Runescape and EVE Online. It works with these MMORPGs, but for other styles of games it doesn't work.
