Feeling like contacting me?

email - hn (at) femto (dot) host discord - Codefined#8017

I'm pretty open to talking about anything.

codefined··on Ask HN: How much time per week do you spend on side projects?
I think at that stage it becomes your main project!

Have you considered downloading just the envelope of each email very quickly at the start (takes 2-3 seconds for me with 3,000 emails) and then lazy loading the rest either when they're loaded by the user or slowly over time? Even downloading hundreds of thousands of items would take only a minute of high CPU usage.

Compressed as an executable, using `electron-builder`. And thanks, femto is cool, but Nylas is awesome! It's the mail client I currently use and will almost certainly use for the foreseeable future.

Just thought I might toy with a minimalist email client, the thing that gets me about Nylas is it takes a while to synchronize emails.

codefined··on Ask HN: How much code do you write a day?
My favorite application to do this is git-quick-stats[0]. Then just multiply by something value (maybe 7/4.8) to calculate an estimate of the number per workday. For me, it appears to be roughly 500 lines per day. However, this is just a side project I work on in my spare time. This is a mean though, not a median (which would probably be more fitting), so should definitely be taken with a pinch of salt.

Meetings are often useless because they're put on too much, but I find that code & design reviews are one of the most important parts. Not only does it benefit the company (having cleaner & more efficient code will remove later code bloat), but it also benefits you by learning from other peoples experience. That being said, there have been times where code reviews aren't done well. If code reviews are based upon fact, I find they often go significantly better than those based upon opinion.

The reason I became a programmer was to not have a repetitive lifestyle and I think it's pretty easy to accomplish that. I always have new problems to solve which require new techniques to be used and anything that gets done repetitively? Just automate it.

Although I do completely agree that about 90% of my work is actually thinking about how to implement a problem as opposed to actually implementing it.

If you're rewriting tens of functions that are almost identical, you should probably consider finding a different way of organising your code (even if there are minor differences between the functions).

40MB seems a little excessive? An entire mail application I created in Electron was 30MB which included the Node binaries. Not to mention it also had all of Chromium.

I've been trying to create a complete open source solution to this exact problem, although I've only been working on it for a month and so far have only semi-complete the email part of it. You can see the current iteration of it here:

Sorry about some of the negative comments posted on here, apparently some people in this community don't understand the entire purpose of "Show HN". The game itself is very fun, congratulations on making it!

Nine minutes per piece of content would be _significantly_ more than any other company I've seen has given to reporting of user-generated content. I would also agree that unless it's a video, nine minutes is enough time.
codefined··on Ask HN: Do you think Electron is good for building Desktop Apps?
I would thoroughly disagree with you that there is any other repository of libraries nearly the size of NPM. Take a look at ModuleCounts[0] and you'll see that NPM is growing 4x faster than the next sized repository (Maven) with already over double the number of modules.

Entertainingly, the size for naver.com and youtube.com are the same for me, both reaching 1.6MB (without caching). As far as I can see, the only difference is that for naver.com, 1.3MB are for images with 0.3MB for the page whereas with youtube.com only 0.6MB are for images and 1MB is for the page.

A _lot_ of shorteners die, with millions of links dying every day [0]. This method would be reproducible, so they'd never die.

Another thought, however, an application I wrote is 30MB when packaged. On an average internet speed, this takes ~16 seconds for your average internet speed (15mbps). Even on 1mbps, it only takes 4 minutes for the application.

When unpacked, it weighs about 100MB. This disk space costs roughly £0.004 for an HDD or about £0.020 for an SSD.

In exchange for these extra costs, I get to use HTML, CSS and JS on both our website and our desktop applications and they get to share the same codebase. That alone must saves me 50% of the time. The fact people might have to spend upto 3 more minutes to download my application and that it costs them 2p to install it on their SSD is minimal compared to the fact that I can have twice as many features in the same amount of time.

Virtualisaton is the basic task you're doing, you're making a "virtual" computer. The idea of the "cloud" is more that these virtual machines are hosted in a room somewhere far away with other virtual computers there as well.

For instance, I can install VMWare and get virtualisation going on my laptop, but I wouldn't consider that the cloud. Similar, you can get bare metal computers on the cloud which aren't virtualised.
