Winning the fights against code !

codegladiator··on Running a Unix-like OS on a home-built CPU with a home-built C compiler
new doesn't come before knowing what exists and why, and to understand the latter making it is important. as a teacher if you fail to understand you should probably spend some time to read more why people study what exists in school and college for the better part of their life.
codegladiator··on Logging Everyone Out
Curious why do you trust (in cases where trust is even required) wikipedia ?

I am under the impression that anyone can build credit and write what they think is correct. Do you check the linked sources and verify as such ?

codegladiator··on YouTubers are upscaling the past to 4K, but historians want them to stop
> ML/AI-invented content (colours, fill-ins during upscaling, textures, etc.) already outperforms genuine historical content

I think you are missing OPs point.

Better (colours, fill-ins during upscaling, textures, etc.) is not more accurate. Any change is worse from the original because now its modified (however ugly the original is). It suddenly becomes a fake.

your ssl cert is not valid for www subdomain. only valid for root so the link doesn't work.

codegladiator··on Epic’s decision to bypass Apple’s App Store policies was dishonest, says judge
And now everyone should know what they are getting into with any of these stores that 30% is normal. Fight back is futile. Just makes microsoft look like stupid business guys not charging 30% yet.

Nice domain name for "job resume" related services
codegladiator··on Amazon restricts how rival device makers buy ads on its site
Sorry I don't get the point. Costco's competitors selling Costo's cheaper product would still harm costco ?

Does costco get some extra benefit if the consumer buys Kirkland from costco ?

codegladiator··on Amazon restricts how rival device makers buy ads on its site
Why can't they still sell it at stores which they don't owe?
codegladiator··on Won’t Subscribe
That can go ugly as well. What happens if nobody is putting in money for real issues (some accident somewhere) and everyone is putting in money for vain news (celeb news?).
codegladiator··on Ask HN: Why would a bot (or person) leave these identical nonsense IMDB reviews?
Somehow your 2nd and 3rd link is giving 404. But I suspect to get the account out of "new accounts" list, you know like the green usernames on HN. Just a guess though.
codegladiator··on 5k people have pledged to give 10%+ of their income to effective charities
> 10% of their lifetime incomes

is a lot. People do donate, but it's not anywhere near 10% of income.

codegladiator··on What Is Math?
If you think about it really hard (since we are at abstract) "1 of <something>" is never equal to any other "1 of <something>"

Nothing is equal in universe. Everything is its own thing. 1 drop of water != another 1 drop of water. Two different entities.

Only in math we have 1=1 or 1+1=2. And math doesn't work for universe, it works for science.

Amaroli is different thing and is not related to anything passing from the nose.

You are probably mixing up Neti and Amaroli.

codegladiator··on What Is Math?
You are correct when you say its not a defined measurement. And that is the point. Not defined in math.

Math is our reality, and not a universal reality/law/principal (while science conservation of energy/matter is universal). There are no addition/subtraction happening in the universe.

Addition is not conservation. But that's how we see it.

codegladiator··on What Is Math?
Sure we can measure something else to keep a track of whats happening and fit our definitions, but the math remain true, isn't it? It is still 1 river and 1 drop and 2 sticks.
codegladiator··on What Is Math?
> This seems like a boring objection: where does the letter 'A', or the ascii 0x41, exist?

Only in our minds ? A doesn't really exist IMO.

codegladiator··on What Is Math?
1 drop of water + 1 drop of water = 1 drop of water

1 river + 1 river = 1 river

1 stick - 1/2 stick = 2 stick

If as a dev one ~not know~, assumes that their code base will have issues because its python 2, then the dev has some issues.

codegladiator··on Ask HN: People who stick to Windows, why?
I recently came back to windows after 10 years of ubuntu ( i had it dual boot setup all the time but never used it other than games).

The WSL 2 is smooth. So feels like best of both worlds now.

Playing games on linux is hard.

codegladiator··on Ask HN: How does a Triplebyte certification factor into a resume?
> top 10% of quiz takers on their platform

I think certifications should not be given with the criteria of "top X%", but should have a clear score threshold (above X score).

Because even knowing the hardness of their test would not give me clear indication as to how the candidate actually performed. Only relatively.

Based on this I usually give very less weight to certificates like that.

codegladiator··on Show HN: Compile Ruby to C
No. You can continue to build everything with the language you love. But there are cases where a certain thing is just easier to get done in a particular language. And there is nothing about hating any language.
codegladiator··on Show HN: Compile Ruby to C
For example if you are building something around nlp, probably pick python.

Also, since you are all into ruby, maybe take a look around as to why other languages exist.
