codegladiator··on Ask HN: What are some terminal tricks you wish you knew sooner?
ctrl+r for reverse searching of previous command

add a "# tags" at any commands end to use above for future.

so lets say you have a ssh into multiple servers

$ ssh -Uasfd host1 # server1

$ ssh -Uaiouhqe host2 # server2

then later, ctrl+r -> and type ver1

That's also there, but medium pay walled it for me before plotly would.
codegladiator··on Ask HN: Is GraphQL still relevant?
To me "migrating from rest to graphql" feels like the new "migrating from monolith to microservices". Everyone is being told to get to graphql because of some benefits they might never need.
codegladiator··on How I tried to compete with YouTube and Google with Livevideo.com
Not if the "charge for search" is actually paid by the website. Google is indirectly charging the users

Google -> search results (for free) -> website (owner paid for seo/adwords and charge the customer)

Similar thing happened with google maps while they were never a monopoly by your definition because other solutions exist.

codegladiator··on Ask HN: Suggest me a new programming language with small user community to learn
What do you consider as "run-of-the-mill" libraries ? like data-structures/algos ? or say something like a database connector / http router ?
codegladiator··on Ask HN: Why do langs with alleged “automatic memory management manage tiny part
How would your new OS/hardware know when the "use" of the resource is complete ? Maybe the dev wanted to read just 10 bytes from a 1 GB file, maybe 100 bytes... maybe its a telnet connection which is never supposed to be closed and just kept in a pool ?

For a very small benefit of "automatic closing of resources" this looks like a huge trade-off.

codegladiator··on Ask HN: How to deploy a single web page in 2019?
No questions for vue cli for a single "web page"? Really? Or even ci/cd?
codegladiator··on Ask HN: How to deploy a single web page in 2019?
Yes, use vue cli to generate the skeleton app, it will add all the things you mentioned like webpack. Then use Travis or circle ci to build the app, finally setup a kubernetes cluster so you can deploy your docker image easily plus get ssl certificate and other benefits quickly. Now you can call this an app instead of web page.

Who even does just a html?

codegladiator··on Hey advertisers, track this
Yes. One by one on Opera, didn't hang/slow-down my machine though.
codegladiator··on Ask HN: Can we create a new internet where search engines are irrelevant?
No

> If your work isn't ready for people to try out yet, please don't do a Show HN. Once it's ready, come back and do it then.

> Blog posts, sign-up pages, and fundraisers can't be tried out, so they can't be Show HNs.

codegladiator··on DJI RoboMaster S1
So you must have same sentiments regarding paintball and lasertag as well ?
codegladiator··on DJI RoboMaster S1
> where it is hunting down a child

You are explicitly trying to put it out of context and I don't understand why.

Thats tracking and object and not "hunting". Even the hover link which makes that video visible mentions this:

> People Recognition

> Thanks to advanced computer vision technology, the S1 is able to identify and track any individual you select in the S1’s FOV.

codegladiator··on Ask HN: Is it worth learning Vim/Emacs if you're doing well with VSCode already?
Not worth at all unless you work too much in ssh/cli.

Just the basic paradigm and few basic commands is all you need.

codegladiator··on Ask HN: Free program for making polished PDFs?
I think you can replace "PDF" in your question with "document" and use anything (latex/word/libre) then just print it as pdf.
codegladiator··on Powerless investors vote overwhelmingly to oust Mark Zuckerberg as chairman
The engineers are definitely involved. This doesn't mean that we will stop creating things which can hurt people, but people who are involved in the pipeline need to be held responsible for supplying/maintaining to those with bad intentions.

So making guns is okay, supplying them randomly is illegal at most places because they just do harm.

Similarly there at these companies the engineers working to maintain the infra making it all possible.

Engineers need to understand where their work is getting put at.

We're told not to build our own since we don't understand what we're using

codegladiator··on Show HN: Scar – Static websites with HTTPS, a global CDN, and custom domains
No, vendor lock in can mean a lot, from lets say even a simple plain API implementation, where one vendor might implement something(storage for eg) in a way where its not possible for the other vendor.

I recently moved one of my k8s cluster from gc to aws, even terminology change can introduce a lot of awkwardness.

Just lead ? I am interviewing "Full stack rockstars" who haven't who think SQL is unfit for every purpose. Frustrating, but a good filter.

codegladiator··on Music: A Mathematical Offering (2006)
Correct, its not been updated though the book says it would probably have been updated.

I found the link to the new home page of the author:

https://homepages.abdn.ac.uk/d.j.benson/pages/

which links to the same version of the book.

Wearing ironed clothes makes me feel much better compared to wearing wrinkled clothes. Sometimes the difference could be as huge as between a good day and bad day. So maybe luxury but not useless.

I think 120 seconds is really short, say 10-15 minutes would be better for demo.
codegladiator··on Show HN: docker-run.com enables to “docker run” in the clould with a subdomain
The sub-domains you are assigning doesn't work for me. Lookup fails.

Eg: https://zeyxnt8hs40zr2.docker-run.com/ https://qazf5k4ow7gpz2vq.docker-run.com/

Am I understanding something wrong or what ? Rabies vaccinations are something about $10 in India. I knew prices are up in US but this seems another level.

codegladiator··on Does contributing to open-source companies increase chance of a job there?
No
codegladiator··on Ask HN: Should Apple buy DuckDuckGo?
DDG's allure is that it doesn't track you. Apple has a track record of investing into not tracking you, so IMO acquisition by FANG might be doom for it but acquisition by `A` wouldn't be.
