codejoust··on That mysterious J in emails
Now I found the phantom character! Whenever I got an email from someone they'd randomly have 'J' in it for me and a bunch of other people who received it (I used thunderbird, and most everyone else I talked to use gmail). It's odd that Microsoft didn't use an ascii/unicode special character or a embed image in the email (alt-texting it).
codejoust··on Offer HN: Help with Ruby on Rails
I'm a rails developer and would also be happy to help with a rails project.
codejoust··on Offer HN: Front-End Web Development.
A good way to build an first app in Python would be to go through the google app engine docs for python, they provide the ability to deploy your app and have a good api. To learn javascript, if you already know C the syntax itself is a lot like C, but there is the dom and dynamically typed variables. A good way to start might be learning some javascript basics and taking a look at jQuery: http://docs.jquery.com/Tutorials:Getting_Started_with_jQuery. Hope that helps!
codejoust··on Hacker News Facebook Group
This will be interesting if it can be tied in with Facebook Connect -- taking over the live website chat space. It's really annoying to always have a new message in chat, though.
codejoust··on Republicans' new Web site not exactly what they hoped it would be
Well, considering most of the government uses a Microsoft stack I'm not surprised. Besides, their categorization is pretty well-done. Reddit and sites such as this one are harder to use for people who don't write software or regularly browse the internet. (And, considering Stackoverflow is based on a Microsoft stack very similar to this site, it's slightly silly. Pick the right tools for the task and a dev stack you enjoy).

Well, their publicity is working. Try refreshing it once or twice and it should come up. Probably got an influx of people from this site and others visiting it which overwhelmed it.
codejoust··on Ask HN: Is AP Computer Science Worthwhile as a student Programmer?
Yes, currently I am focusing on projects and consulting (google my username for more on that). I'm willing to open options, so I may consider taking an AP Comp. Sci class senior year. Would I miss anything by reviewing for the test and taking it? Going through the review sheet most everything looks familiar, but I'm not sure if that's the difference between knowing from a working vs. a theoretical standpoint.
codejoust··on Ask HN: Is AP Computer Science Worthwhile as a student Programmer?
Is the course learning Java or an introduction to programming? It looks like the old course was based on learning C and C++, but now it seems like they have focused on Java for easier learning / usage. I have gone through some stuff on the C and C++ curriculum and it does look very worthwhile (although it is discontinued), but the Java program looks much weaker, only covering basic algorithms and skipping pointers, etc.
codejoust··on A FB ad targeted at one person (my wife)
That's why you don't put in so much personal information. The oddest, though, is when looking at a site that has nothing to do with IT, there are contextual ads for IT stuff below.
codejoust··on Why in the world does Facebook let me do this?
Just remove everything after the &access_token= part and it'll work. The access token has expired, but it's not even necessary to search for public posts.
codejoust··on How to get a 15-year-old started with coding?
I'm younger myself, and I started learning with WYSIWYG html and copy+paste javascript. From there, I learned real html and css, progressing to PHP. After PHP, I was real interested in this thing called Ruby on Rails, took me forever to even get it installed. After that, I continued to work in rails and ruby, along with php. I think if I could do it again, I'd start learning just python or ruby. A linux environment is a big plus, even if it's just a virtual machine. Javascript is a great language, and starting out with jQuery then backtracing to real javascript is a good, and instantly gratifying way to learn, you have to start somewhere.
codejoust··on How inconsistent design will save iTunes
Even autohide taskbars are annoying, I'm using a 10px gnome panel now, and more command-line text search (built into nautilus). A problem with this approach is also if I go over to a friend's house that doesn't ever use the search box, I'll have to jump through hoops to even get to the search box, not a good idea. Hiding user interfaces and dynamically adopting them could be a good idea, but it makes the user think more, in an attempt to make them think less. When helping others, uniformity is important.

If this site was like this, realizing that I read the whole comment thread before commenting and moving the comment box to the bottom of the page for me, it would be frustrating because I would sometimes scroll up and think I was logged out, etc. (Big problem even when people accidentally remove UI elements from a program such as safari by dragging them off the toolbar.)

codejoust··on /r/startups - a Reddit for startups
Last I checked it's called Hacker News.
codejoust··on Ask HN: Just finished coding my new startup; need ideas for getting traction
Sometimes, you need to focus on the bueinsuess idea, as noted below, along with the coding. Also, the coding isn't everything. Coding is a small part, but also is user interface design, from scaling good images, picking easy-to-read fonts, and spelling. People automatically distrust services that have a misspelled logout button for instance. Coding is a small part to a process. Building traction is a final goal, of which coding is a small part. Coding isn't everything for a web startup.
codejoust··on Ask HN: Please review my web app for web designers with no programming skills
That's exactly what I was thinking... (Designers?)
