coderKen··on Ask HN: What skills do self-taught Web Developers commonly lack?
This question comes up a lot, I once saw this asked on Quora, will update this post once I get the link. IMHO I think most self-taught developers lack the basic CS concepts, myself being a self-taught developer created a list of topics that I study every morning -> https://github.com/nkudo/daily-study

Currently learning algorithms and I've been enjoying it so far, learnt a lot and some of the knowledge gained helped me in a recent interview where I was asked what data-structure the HTML DOM used. I am a JavaScript person so I'm reading this book -> http://www.amazon.com/Structures-Algorithms-JavaScript-Micha...

coderKen··on Ask HN: Is it necessary that a developer own an Apple laptop?
I totally agree with @sauere

I'm not sure if this applies everywhere but if you don't use a Mac you are mostly seen as a cheap developer.

coderKen··on Ask HN: Is your Slack-based product profitable?
I guess we'll have to find out in the coming years.

coderKen··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2016)
what special thing do you guys do that makes it only open to Europeans?
coderKen··on Ask HN: How happy are you working as a programmer?
When I first started out as a self-thought programer and worked for the first company where I really enjoyed my work, the second was horrible, third was cool at first until it began to suck. I am now usually assigned tasks like changing the margin of buttons and other annoying stuff, I don't feel my skills are improving and am not gaining any knowledge. Really horrible
coderKen··on Ask HN: What's the code you've written of which you are the most proud?
Some drawing app with HTML5 Canvas API https://github.com/nkudo/canvas-project Really enjoyed every single minute I spent coding this app, pure bliss.
coderKen··on Ask HN: Why Apple laptops are predominant laptops on every hackathon I go?
Totally agree, I used to work with a HP running Ubuntu 14.04 but the UI just sucks and most of those tiny functionalities that are available on the Mac just makes you not think of getting another laptop. I don't think I can ever use another machine that is not a Mac. I just recently found out that you could create a digital signature on the mac, also imagine the ease of taking a screen snapshot. With windows you would have installed two shitty software's to do that.
coderKen··on Ask HN: What to do if you hate your coding job? (UK, 24yr old)
I am in your exact situation right now and I also am 24year old.
coderKen··on Ask HN: What sites do you use to find contract work?
Anyone, currently looking for a remote front-end developer? I am full-stack developer (tending towards front-end nowadays), I live in Lagos, Nigeria and looking for remote work. I have a strong Javascript(NodeJS, AngularJs) background with over 3yrs experience.

coderKen··on Ask HN: How long did it take for you to get jaded in this industry?
It's all the craze, activities, noise and what not that has moved computing forward. If the industry was not constantly improving, we would have been stuck with a 5MB hard drive this big -> http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/27/visualized-ibms-1956-hdd-...
coderKen··on Konga: The Emergence of an African Technology Powerhouse
oops, didn't even realized it was you. I hardly check out usernames on HN, I just go for the content because most usernames are usually weird.
coderKen··on Konga: The Emergence of an African Technology Powerhouse
He said technology powerhouse not, business powerhouse. I don't see how traction, market share or profit come in here. But for the record, Konga is moving fast in terms of traction and has a fair share of the Nigerian market, this is a country of over 100 Million people with more than 16% online and increasing. If you live in Nigeria you should know this, I really doubt that you live in Africa. I am not for endearment but if you do the maths, Konga is headed towards profitability that's for sure.

coderKen··on Konga: The Emergence of an African Technology Powerhouse
It's good to know that Nigerian tech companies are now building stuff with really high standards. I always respected Konga after Omin - an engineer gave a talk on an app he did for the stock market. I think it would be a fun place to work. Do they have any openings for front-end engineers?
coderKen··on What are your problems or need in your life
really? cool!
coderKen··on What are your problems or need in your life
The thing is I want to work at a smaller startup not another startup-slowly-turning-to-an-organisation
coderKen··on What are your problems or need in your life
Really bored at my current day Job, always assigned to do mundane tasks, I feel like my life is wasting away. Am 23 been programming since I was 18. I recently (Last week) got a remote contract gig which I do at night which helps a bit but my day Job is sucking the life out of me, but I can't change it till I find another one. I can feel my passion during the day fading away.
coderKen··on Ask HN: Working remotely on first programming job?
@JavaScriptKicks @JavaScriptDaily this should get you started.
coderKen··on What will be the top 3 trends in 2016, that shape how we build our startups?
Definitely, you see the use of buttons and textboxes and checkboxes will slowly become obsolete, especially as advancement in natural language will continue to rise. So I just got a new Android Phone and since I got it, I have never for once set an alarm or reminder manually, I just do the "Ok Google" thingy and talk to it and boom, it's all done. This made me realize that the user-interface as we know it today will slowly become obsolete and even more so when AI is embedded in the OS and an API is exposed so that third-party apps will be able to tap into it.

Let's Imagine a future where the Android OS has become so advanced say v9.3 and has natural language API embedded that apps like say Uber can tap into, if you wanted to request for a ride, you wouldn't need to tap silly buttons and drag a pin across a map, you would simply say "Hello Uber I am going Trafalgar square, kindly request an Uber X to come pick me up"

PS: I build android apps

If you are not a very social person i.e you are not usually on twitter then Medium is the way to go, they deliver really juicy information right in your inbox every morning for your consumption. You'd be wise to follow topics like HTML/CSS, JavaScript and NodeJS.
coderKen··on Ask HN: Working remotely on first programming job?
at first, I worked at local jobs for almost nothing just to get my foot in the door, after which I freelanced for almost a year (still local jobs) by then I had a lot of confidence in my skills so I started looking at remote Jobs.
coderKen··on Ask HN: Developers, how many hours do you feel you are productive in a day?
That depends on the kind of project you are working on, If you are highly motivated and the project is fun you may work for longer hours, my case I could go as long as 8hrs non-stop but if it's not as described above then 3hrs max.

Two years ago I experienced a burnout for the first time, for a 23-year old freelancer, I knew nothing about burnouts and thought I was severely depressed. My motivation level was 0.

So if your job is fun then you may find 8hrs a day not even enough, but it's not your fault, it's your employers.

coderKen··on Ask HN: Working remotely on first programming job?
If you use twitter, I'd recommend following a couple of Javascript groups, this will help keep you informed. Also follow a couple of JavaScript publications on Medium too.

It's important that you are always updated as a developer because tech is really fast-paced, I was not fortunate enough to know this when I started programming 4 years ago in college because we had poor/no internet connection.

But with regular internet connection, I have learnt a lot and in a very short time.

I cannot not over-emphasize the importance of having steady source of programming info, especially if you do not have a mentor around you as was my case too starting out.

Also familiarize yourself with Git, create a github account because many companies use it a lot for collaboration.

PS: I live in West-Africa and I currently work remotely as a software developer for companies in New York and San-Fransisco and write a lot JavaScript daily.

coderKen··on What will be the top 3 trends in 2016, that shape how we build our startups?
AI will be the new UI. before you downvote ask me for an explanation.
coderKen··on Ask HN: What is now?
seriously? :)
coderKen··on Ask HN: What browser extensions do you use for HN?
Chrome works good.
coderKen··on Ask HN: Where do you find software engineering jobs?
Right here on HN is a good place to start. There is usually a who is hiring and who want's to be hired thread every first week of every month.
coderKen··on Ask HN: What are you currently building?
Just a week before Christmas I started working on a SaaS project to help organisations keep track and provide useful information on visitors. Involves an app and a desktop client
