coderdude··on U.S. government begins asking foreign travelers about social media
I kind of envy that. But years ago I cared a whole lot about HN and tied my personal self to it. I owe a lot to the community, too. For better or for worse, I'm stuck. I don't know of a community I'd rather be part of. It just is what it is.
coderdude··on U.S. government begins asking foreign travelers about social media
Who among us isn't already self-censoring?

In contrast to yourself, I'm most self-censored here. In a game or in person is where I feel like I can speak freely. Here, not so much.

coderdude··on How Social Isolation Is Killing Us
> but living with someone is more likely to destroy your friendship than strengthen it.

Never live with someone you aren't prepared to hate. Nothing kills a friendship like becoming roommates.

coderdude··on AdNauseam: Fight Back Against Advertising Networks and Privacy Abuse
Trying to explain this has failed an innumerable number of times here. Whenever this discussion pops up, there are die-hards who are against all advertising versus those who present a rational argument explaining how the content they willingly consume is supported by those ads. Like wrestling in the mud with a pig, you will come out of this unfulfilled while the other side comes out feeling like the winner. They're just a highly vocal minority.

I'm not a personal fan of ads but when it comes to things I find important enough and have the option, I pay to remove them. The difference however is that the die-hards tend to not accept paying or viewing ads as acceptable. If they did, this wouldn't keep coming up.

coderdude··on Crytek has not paid wages, employees are leaving
If it comes to pass that Crytek cannot, and knowingly could not, pay them then that's when to bandwagon. Not before it's known. That's how it plays out on HN. Guilty before proven innocent.

If you believed everything you read here the world would be a very alien place.

coderdude··on Crytek has not paid wages, employees are leaving
Your error was to go against the 'gimme free stoofs' people. They outnumber us 1 million to 1.
coderdude··on Crytek has not paid wages, employees are leaving
They're still not the same thing at all.
coderdude··on Crytek has not paid wages, employees are leaving
You are factually correct. The emotion-based downvoting is real.
coderdude··on Let’s relocate a bunch of government agencies to the Midwest
How can you increase demand for housing and decrease the cost of housing at the same time?
coderdude··on How publishers are defeating ad blockers and how ad blockers are fighting back
Indeed. I think you and I both are left with many others wondering what the ultimate solution will be.
coderdude··on How publishers are defeating ad blockers and how ad blockers are fighting back
I'm positive I've said exactly the same thing in the past. Over time, I realized that the issue is more nuanced. I don't think most people actually feel entitled to free content, but rather that the non-monetary "fee" is not acceptable. There is no known simple solution to this issue that I'm aware of.
coderdude··on How publishers are defeating ad blockers and how ad blockers are fighting back
The bit about them insisting they know better than you what you need to see and how you need to see it, coupled with the bit about ads, is a non sequitur. We're talking about tracking usage stats.

Some people simply can't be bothered to disable an ad blocker for non-ad related things. Others take a more extreme stance and consider analysis itself to be an affront. Everyone loses. Producers don't know what works or doesn't and consumers don't get the content they desire.

One thing I've noticed is that these comments tend to come from pure consumers but rarely from those who both produce and consume. It's partially an issue of having a lack of perspective of the other part of the equation.

coderdude··on How publishers are defeating ad blockers and how ad blockers are fighting back
They wanted to see information about how you use something they offer. You wanted something they offer. You declined, which is your choice, of course. I think you both lost that battle.
coderdude··on Facebook developing AI to flag offensive live videos
Don't worry about it brother. You're watching something go down you're not part of. Your response is funny but it's not part of your HN pay grade.
coderdude··on Facebook developing AI to flag offensive live videos
You're the only person with the balls to show it. Thanks. There are so many willing to deal with what it takes but the most important thing is for people to bust out the qwerty and speak.
coderdude··on Facebook developing AI to flag offensive live videos
If your one opening argument rides on being someone who watches YouTube all day, you're going to meet some questions. If someone asks that question, the wrong answer is to tell them to watch YouTube all day with you. He referenced something like all we do is watch the Maury Povich version of the Internet all day. I asked, and this is what I get.

Literally no one will even attempt to address my original concern. We love references like we love cranberry sauce on our turkeys.

I think they're afraid I'll buy some deviled eggs if I talk.

Edit:

I hold true to what I said, with the caveat that I picked the wrong fight on the wrong day.

coderdude··on Facebook developing AI to flag offensive live videos
He's not wrong about it being off-topic. He's wrong about trying to put something kinda like it in the same conversation. It's typical. We get it all the time here.
coderdude··on Facebook developing AI to flag offensive live videos
Is it only not in taste to ask for references when numbers aren't involved? It was a simple request. Bet you could have fulfilled it.
coderdude··on Facebook developing AI to flag offensive live videos
Lol, what? Stop trying to shoehorn unrelated things into your narrow view of the world.
coderdude··on Facebook developing AI to flag offensive live videos
What's that video? It's hard to comment without the context.
coderdude··on Best Practices for Time Travelers (2003)
Were you disappointed that this wasn't bleeding edge advice for time travelers?
coderdude··on Female monkeys use wile to rally troops
He's saying that because the person who says they've been here for 8 years registered 16 days ago. As if, in 8 years of Inflammatory HN commentary, only just now did they decide to stop lurking. And only just now did they become so vocal about what matters to them.

That's my interpretation. It could also mean the more obvious, "I've been here for 8 years but under a different name."

coderdude··on Female monkeys use wile to rally troops
As someone who has actually been here for like 8 years, I know better than to be baited into doing basic legwork research for the uninitiated.
coderdude··on Female monkeys use wile to rally troops
You can do the work for yourself and search HN. I'm not going to sift through it all. If you're actually interested in knowing, take a few minutes.
coderdude··on Female monkeys use wile to rally troops
Be sure to also screencap the hundreds of statements made against males in order to keep your perspective accurate.
coderdude··on Why the MacBook Pro Is Limited to 16GB of RAM
If you've ever used Firefox this isn't lost on you. However, it's a pitiful defense for a $1500+ computer.
coderdude··on Why the MacBook Pro Is Limited to 16GB of RAM
This was exactly what I was shooting for, myself. I needed something powerful but portable. Ultimately what I got was very portable but not very powerful. "Time to reboot!" should not be part of the daily routine.
coderdude··on Why the MacBook Pro Is Limited to 16GB of RAM
Well, I'm tired of an employee coming up to me and saying "this thing is going so slow" and it's just Firefox and some other things open. The hardware can't keep up with today's software demands. Whether it's a memory constraint or otherwise. Apple today doesn't "just work". It's not like I'm asking my employees to render the next Toy Story. We're talking emails and opening pages in a browser.

I now do all my work on a beefy box running Ubuntu, as I did prior to my last year's stint in trying Apple hardware full time. I'm transitioning who I can onto similar setups and moving away from the laptop-as-the-main-computer setup. They just aren't good enough for it.

coderdude··on Why the MacBook Pro Is Limited to 16GB of RAM
I'm not sure what they're optimizing for. If they had some bad ass machine that wasn't the thinnest machine in existence I'd still buy it. I own a pro and an air from the last generation and I think they suck. Give me something worth the bucks and tack on a few millimeters to make it happen. I absolutely will not pay for their current trajectory of lackluster stats and a small physical footprint. I need better. If that means bigger, they should get over it and deliver.
coderdude··on Show HN: Writing an HTTP server in Prolog
> Are you saying that people shouldn't teach themselves powerful technologies?

That much it was clear they weren't saying. What was being said was that prolog is just about the last lang you'd do this in. Aside from that, I think everyone else was aware that this was an experiment.

To add:

I think this is a great approach. The last highly up voted article suffered from being the same ol' hello world intro to prolog. It's fun to see a real world problem tackled.
