I'll bet you're right about that. To AVG's credit, it may be overly protective and annoying at times but I don't think it has ever let me down outside of being annoying popupware. Maybe I should just finally pay for it like I should have since I've been enjoying their free edition for longer than my memory serves me. Note to self: do the same for Sublime Text.

I hate to say this but you basically have to trust these types of authorities when it comes to this type of "trust." You wouldn't believe how many people are out to scam. It's endemic in anything that involves money. I'd say "few bad eggs" but it's mostly shit eggs amongst a few good eggs.

I've been here for ages and it didn't occur to me to use the Web link to sneak past their sign up wall earlier today. I support no longer allowing submissions that require "one weird trick" just to read.

For me, the extra time isn't too much of a burden. It does take longer than a few seconds but that's not my beef with it. My beef is with the problem of "so, what do I do? Insert or swipe?"

Some places require inserting. Some places still use swiping. There's a swipe area and an insert slot. The cashier looks at you like you're new to using credit cards when you don't guess the right method, even though it's different everywhere you go. It's a mess and apparently the chip isn't even a requirement. Screw the chip.

They can remotely wipe my stolen machines? That's the one cool thing I've heard. How come I haven't received that email in my spam box? Poor marketing attempt if that's what they're aiming for. I'm not running a huge company but they could at least try targeting the SMB sector (I think I qualify for that). I'm against the ME vector up until it's actually useful to me.

I am. I look them in the eyes and treat them like people. I know from the people I talk to that the worst part is having everyone ignore you and not treat you like a fellow human. It breaks my heart. It sucks out there. We might be off topic but I get you.

I'm in the same-ish boat with regards to paid subscriptions. I pay for what is worth it to me. I think it's an older people trend yet. I tend to put things in the perspective of what a movie costs to watch in theaters. If the entertainment value surpasses or at least equals that to me, I go for it. Netflix and Hulu are a friggin bargain. Other services fall on that spectrum to me. It's all about the value.

I laugh when you bring up compatibility issues because man have I grappled with them, too. You won't hear me say they're on the bleeding edge of c++ standards. It's their IDE that compels me to speak on their behalf. I do get what you're driving at, though.

I feel like I've had a chance to be on both sides of this issue. I hate visiting a site and having the page jump around a bunch while all the ads load. And then dodge the ads. I also pay a lot for advertising. I get that it sucks for every body. I have sympathy for NYT. This stuff doesn't get written for free. I don't have any ideas to contribute yet but they aren't wrong to need to put their foot down and readers aren't wrong to want an alternative. It's a weird time for the net.

You got to see how the sausage is made, so to speak. I'm still a fan of the end products that I've dealt with. They have a ton of products.

Because Visual Studio isn't on every platform yet? The answer to your question is yes, btw. I spend most of my time in Ubuntu and I've also been forced to get my own projects to compile on my MacBook. It sucks, if that's what you were getting at. At least make a point.
