codeup··on The Coming Privacy Panic
We're talking about privacy here. ChromeOS is a ridiculous suggestion.
codeup··on The Freedom Box Alternative to Facebook
Do you have a tl;dr? The title is bad already, "freedom or tyranny". I think there is more to this than good vs. evil. But looking at RMS, you can see that black/white thinking can produce licenses that work great in the hands of people who think more colorful (the free software scene).
codeup··on The Freedom Box Alternative to Facebook
If the amount was ordinate, they wouldn't have come up with the idea and work on the implementation in the first place. So the issue is what you think about their philosophy and implementation.
codeup··on The Freedom Box Alternative to Facebook
> Seems fundamentally flawed.

Would you call your RL social presence flawed? If you're not physically with a group of friends, your social presence in their group is also "offline" physically, but you are still socially present in the group through their thoughts and conversations.

If you think, however, that the data-hungry "social" model of FB is the way to go, then yes, the FreedomBox is fundamentally flawed for you. Point being that the makers of FreedomBox think the FB model is fundamentally flawed.

codeup··on Facebook sorry over face tagging launch
Do you know why FB isn't asking for permission? Because it can get away with this patronizing and self serving behavior.
codeup··on Facebook - facial recognition is enabled
Looking at the privacy, this was unimaginable 5-10 years ago. But Facebook's strategy of little steps is working. I'm quite sure people will accept this and most comments won't go beyond how amazing this is, creepy but still awesome and similar blabla.
codeup··on Statement About Oracle’s Move To Donate OpenOffice.org To The Apache Foundation
My bet is that the Document Foundation will end up offering the Apache Software Foundation a major role in their organization in exchange for a merger of the OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice codebases.
codeup··on Oracle 'donates' OpenOffice.org to Apache foundation
"despite Oracle's talk of 'donation', a lengthy process precedes the ASF's acceptance of candidates"
codeup··on Oracle 'donates' OpenOffice.org to Apache foundation
As expected Oracle didn't donate it to The Document Foundation. There will be more calls to merge the OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice projects now. That is really what needs to be done, both office suites are still almost identical.

The Apache Software Foundation and The Document Foundation have to overcome their egos and do the right thing. Then we could credit TDF with 'liberating' OOO and ASF with closing the deal.

If they don't merge OOO and LO this 'donation' could create a new division in the Open Source community.

codeup··on Museum of me - A museum made from your own facebook data
For those without a Facebook account, can someone do something like a TL;DR?
codeup··on Let's just use Emacs
Org Mode's agenda has something like that: http://orgmode.org/manual/Timeline.html
codeup··on Ask PG: Is something staving off the decline of HN?
I know many disagree with hiding comment scores, but in my view, the quality of discussions has notably improved since scores are hidden.

I would be interested in knowing how pg estimates the effect of this tweak.

codeup··on Facebook is Great for Dead People
The "subliminal message" remark was somewhat tongue-in-cheek. Calling the inscription a Freudian slip might have been more accurate...
codeup··on Facebook is Great for Dead People
Did you notice the image of the gravestone? The inscription has a (not so) subliminal message.
codeup··on The Cult of Done -- are you in it?
> Laugh at perfection. It's boring and keeps you from being done.

The perfect laugh.

codeup··on Dropbox Lied to Users about Data Security, Complaint to FTC Alleges
Read the article again. Then read your comments. You're just being polemic and you're belittling the issue at stake.
codeup··on Lockitron (YC S09) Lets You Unlock Your Door With Your Phone
Buzzword soup yes, but it's oversalted (once again).

I fail to see any advantage in having my front door "keys" stored in the "cloud".

codeup··on Dropbox Lied to Users about Data Security, Complaint to FTC Alleges
If only they had people like Soghoian dealing with problems in other industries...
codeup··on [dead]
The many people happy with the change won't ask this question.
codeup··on Facebook Loses Much Face In Secret Smear On Google
Don't know what will come out of this but good that Chris Soghoian published the email exchange.
codeup··on Europe's war on cookies
To clarify: My "what's wrong" question meant to show what's wrong with the "what's wrong" question I replied to.

So I agree with your two points. In fact you can easily use interest profiles for serving advertising and news alike, my comparison is apt.

codeup··on Europe's war on cookies
Simply denying aptitude is not an argument. Also, your initial comment only relies on reference to fringe advertising that (probably) nobody here would want to see.
codeup··on Europe's war on cookies
You could also ask: What's wrong with news and political information geared towards your political opinions?
codeup··on 'Steal everything' era of hacking
Most comments seem to miss the point of the article that "data minimisation" or data avoidance is the most efficient security measure. What do you think of that?
codeup··on Microsoft to acquire Skype
How many registered users does FB have in total?
codeup··on Microsoft to acquire Skype
There may be alternatives that cover Skype functionality at least partly if you have the skills and nerves to use them (based on SIP or jingle). But for most of the 170 million connected users, including those who use Linux, there is no alternative to Skype if they want the same featureset (im, voip, video, encryption, conference calls,...). Sad but true.
codeup··on Ask HN: FB banned our page without any reason
FB's practices are well known and should've served as a warning. You shouldn't rely on this being resolved now. I ain't saying it won't be resolved in a good way, but just don't rely on it.

Even if your page is restored, think about alternative marketing channels. Don't make yourself depend on the services of one attractive but unereckonable company.

codeup··on Why Skype is Evil (2007)
You mean that only the browser is software, but not what runs in the browser?
codeup··on Linus Torvalds Interview for LinuxFR
The CA system is broken and browser vendors try to deal with it. Deal with it = trade off between security and (in)convenience.
