codevark··on Ask HN: Good Fitness Band?
The Village People. Oh, wait..
codevark··on The Etymology of Fart Knocker
Quite oddly, none of these explanations comes close to the meaning of the phrase as I have encountered it in my life.
codevark··on Why do techie's use .io instead of .NET for domains?
.net, I have it, It will probably outlive me as I have it on auto-renew.

.io, ain't that what it's all about? Never forget a project manager getting all excited about a little drawing I made showing things going in and out of a box. To him it was a revelation. To me it was just how things work.

codevark··on Ask HN: What do your non-tech friends don‘t understand about technology?
It's more simple than you think it is. It's more complicated than you think it is.

(Didi! Don't touch that button!)

When I was teaching my mother to use a mouse she waved it around in the air and asked why nothing was happening on the screen. When I showed her a picture of water, she kept poking the LCD screen making it distort and laughing that it looked like real water, until I firmly told her to stop before she damaged it.

But even much younger people seem to have no clue. Some think their desktop is their browser, or their browser is the Internet. Some call their monitor (or UPS) their "computer". No understanding of hierarchical file organization. No understanding the difference between memory and storage. No understanding of "context".

My wife complains that Thunderbird is slow. I point out she has tens of thousands of unread emails in her inbox.

A neverending shitshow.

And why don't have the full client list yet?
codevark··on Ask HN: Do you clean out your downloads folder after each download?
I never use the downloads folder. I always download to where I want the thing to go.
codevark··on Ask HN: How much of your code gets thrown away?
Some of my code was written in 1995, and is still being used. I tend to toss my stuff that needs tossing before anyone else sees it. :)
codevark··on Ask HN: Do you visit HN on a daily basis?
Yep, but I just keep reloading "new", as well as slashdot, alternet, wunderground, coinbase, twatter, urbandead, pardus, nationstates, and butterchat.
codevark··on Ask HN: What's a simple setup for creating an offline LAN?
Add a 2nd eth port to your computer, attach a switch/router that the offline devices connect to, using same class C network the 2nd port uses (different from the one on 1st port that connects to broadband router/network). Unless you bridge your ports, the other devices can talk to you and each other, but not the internet. Semi-educated guess :)
codevark··on The West experiences aspects of climate crisis scientists warned of for years
The West? When I was a kid in northern Vermont ('60s-'70s) we would have snow on the ground from mid-October until May or June. One year we had some snow in our front yard under a big pine tree on the 4th of July. We had snowbanks on the road to our house that were so high that I could almost touch the transformers on the electrical poles. We got snowed in for a week and had to use our 23.5hp SkiDoo to get to the store for milk and eggs. Don't talk about "gee, it's finally obvious"; I've known it for decades.
codevark··on Ask HN: How do you automate your data analytics report?
First World Problem. Help me find my webserver. I know it's in my basement.
codevark··on Addressing AI’s energy cost
Batteries! Who wants batteries!
codevark··on Ask HN: How do you deal with slight memory impairment?
Realize that everything is equally important.. to someone. Your job is to juggle all those things and make everyone happy. Including yourself. First.
codevark··on In Dune, Paul Atreides led a jihad, not a crusade
Now you're just picking words. The fact is, on one level, he was right. On another, delusional.
codevark··on Ask HN: Has anyone successfully used LibreOffice for their business?
Use it all the time. Of course, my "business" consists of me and my wife and maybe a couple of kids hehe
codevark··on Ask HN: Do you use your personal computer for programming?
On my work desktop I do Delphi coding. On my work laptop, I mess around with lazarus/FPC. On my home webserver, I use PHP. On one or more of my home desktops (PC, Amiga) I mess with REBOL/RED, ARexx and CanDo. On one of my home desktops I do UE stuff. Random other stuff sprinkled here and there.

"Useful RAM" depends on what you are trying to do. My UE machine has 64GB. Most of my other machines have between 6 and 16GB. My A500 has 3.5MB, my A3000 has 82MB :) Windows and Mac seem to need more RAM ha :/

codevark··on Ask HN: What's your greatest enjoyment in life?
Playing/singing my own music. Dream-flying with my two cats, who are no longer with me :/. Gardening. A good game of footy. Skiing like it's what I was born to do. Coding something remarkable way under schedule. Teaching my wife how to enjoy herself. GMing an amazing game session. Turning 62 this summer while camping out on my land in VT.
codevark··on Ask HN: How many computers you got?
Four windows laptops (two from our employers), old windows Phenom X4 file server, new(er) windows Ryzen 7 PRO desktop, Rocky Linux Athlon X3 webserver, (2) Amiga 3000s, Amiga 500, mini HTPC (needs repair), Mac Mini w/ MorphOS, Pegasos 2 w/ MorphOS, several spare A3000s for parts/repair, RPi Zero W, Android tablet.

17? 18? Maybe more. ha

codevark··on The Niche Programmer
Check out Red (or Rebol).
codevark··on Ask HN: Do you ever service your vehicle?
Canada? You need a Canoo pickup.
codevark··on Ask HN: Is your company considering inflation in this year's comp review cycle?
My company is considering whether we can keep doing what we've been doing for 35+ years for another year. Your point? I haven't seen a raise like that since the '90s (44%) (different company) (maybe you're special).
codevark··on The Joys and Sorrows of Maintaining a Personal Website
I've been running my personal website since 1997.

It went down last night due to power outage. Considering a whole-house generator which would not only increase the value of my property but, as well, keep the dang thing up, mostly.

I really need to update it, so much has happened. :)

codevark··on Ask HN: How did famous college drop-outs learn CS despite dropping out?
I began programming my first year of high school, and in college ended up getting a Humanities BA. My first job was a computer operator/programmer position. I've been doing sweng and IT stuff for almost 50 years, using many different systems and languages.

And, I was almost famous. :)

codevark··on Amiga OCS/ECS was untouchable for about 4-5 years
Yes. I sold Amigas and worked for Psygnosis during that time. TGOD.
codevark··on September 1, 1939 by WH Auden (on hearing war had broken out)
One of the most amazing poems ever written. Auden rules.
codevark··on Ask HN: How I buy a TV that don't show porn ads to kids?
Sceptre makes a 55" non-smart TV that only costs $400. Not OLED, but pretty nice.
codevark··on Ithkuil – An amateur linguist loses control of the language he invented (2012)

codevark··on Technical Analysis of the DDoS Attacks Against Ukrainian Websites
Blocked by Malwarebytes Browser Guard :)
codevark··on Ask HN: How many people use the web from their desktops?
My phone is for phone and messages (not email!). I do use FF on my phone with ad blocker if I have to sit around somewhere with public wifi waiting for something like auto repair work, etc. Otherwise, everything is desktop (and preferably virtualized). I work in IT. <shrugs>
