Do you know if Rumble is sustainable? Just curious
collaborative··on The negative impact of mobile-first web design on desktop
Display: inline-block is the answer :p
collaborative··on I face investigation for terrorism
We saw a sample of this when they ousted Corbyn
collaborative··on Spain tech job market is facing a hiring freeze
Sure, but employees would rather work and live away from the grind-zero. If businesses want to attract talent, they need to accept this. Again, it's about leverage. Employees need to hold the line
collaborative··on PostgresJs: PostgreSQL client for Node.js and Deno
I use pg in Node and these results are impressive
collaborative··on Show HN: An app store just for installable web apps
I really hope your store takes off. I will say a prayer or two to this end. May your good character flourish and may you avoid all temptations that come with gatekeeping

Apple and Google's app stores are death. They motivated me to re-code my c and java-based iOS and Android apps in js+wasm (SPA/PWA) from scratch. For a long time, I announced it with its proper name ("PWA"). I became very frustrated every time I interacted with users who asked "what does that mean?". So now it's simply "Web Version"

collaborative··on Most demographers now predict that human population will plateau
There are plenty of trustworthy fathers they simply aren't the ones they are angling for
collaborative··on Bing Chat responses infiltrated by ads pushing malware
That's correct. But AI can further increase the quality of search results by neutralizing click-bait. Click-bait is where their $ is at
collaborative··on Bing Chat responses infiltrated by ads pushing malware
Neither Google nor MS will ever get AI search right because the only applicable use of AI in a search engine is to remove the seo/junk/ads/clickbait and give the user what he is looking for. This goes against their core business (ads)

Engines like you.com, phind.com, aisearch.vip, or kagi have the advantage because their business model doesn't depend on this

collaborative··on Type 2 diabetes rates in US youth rose 62% after Covid pandemic began
The rise of society and culture-driven anxiety (this is not related to covid the disease) resulting in seeking food comfort and accompanying type 2 diabetes might also explain this

I know a few people that have had their anxiety shoot up recently. We are more isolated than ever

collaborative··on Ask HN: Where Are All the Jobs At?
I recently joined a local tech network and was surprised to see that their slack channel is flooded with "career changers". I assume everyone went for a 3 month coding bootcamp once they caught wind of the reality of remote work. I also think that their plan might not be going too well judging by the numbers

collaborative··on The Tyranny of the Marginal User
For decades now bilionares have bought companies, improved numbers in the short term, and sold them for a profit
collaborative··on Apple finally put USB-C in new iPhone, but limited to 23-year-old USB 2.0 speeds
Looks great, thanks
collaborative··on Skip the API, ship your database
> Moving compute to the client

This is a great point and the reason why I think server-side rendering will ultimately fail.

I've done something similar for a site I manage (6groups.com). Each client's DB log is stored in compressed files on the server and only initialized via sqlite wasm on the client when needed. The trick is to periodically run compaction jobs (also on the client) to make sure DB logs don't grow to unreasonable sizes

I can't imagine the DB consumption I'd have if all client data was in relational format on the server

collaborative··on Apple finally put USB-C in new iPhone, but limited to 23-year-old USB 2.0 speeds
Shocked. I exclusively dump on my NAS from time to time. Connecting to iPhones is my nemesis
collaborative··on Lessons from YC AI Startups
Mine. Only because my time is free and I already had the hardware
collaborative··on A group of open source Android apps without ads and unnecessary permissions
Subscriber count is not telling of what the "vast majority" is doing. Subscriptions to quasi-gate-keepers also can't be compared to "street market" one-time purchases
collaborative··on A group of open source Android apps without ads and unnecessary permissions
Unfortunately, the vast majority of users don't want to spend a dime on any digital good ever. In fact, they are very offended when asked to pay and will gladly leave 1 star reviews thinking that they are defending their interests. They won't admit to it but they are instead paying with their privacy and attention. This is the reason we have tech monopolies financed by marketing and user data for sale on the dark net. And the worst bit of it all is that the current state of affairs is hopelessly irreversible
collaborative··on A group of open source Android apps without ads and unnecessary permissions
imagine having to pay 0 euros for an ecosystem that monetizes your privacy and attention
collaborative··on Investors account for 30 per cent of home buying in Canada, data show
You are being downvoted but you are right. It just depresses me to see that people I look up think this way. I have met others who also can't see that building is the solution because of more exotic reasons: those who want to impose price controls because they think this will somehow finally allow them to own that coveted flat in the center, those unwilling to allow the mass building of lower quality stock because who cares about poor people's houses, etc

A multitude of entitled opinions that in a democracy hinder the construction of houses for the future generation

collaborative··on Investors account for 30 per cent of home buying in Canada, data show
A person I know of outstanding moral character (has adopted 3 kids) boasts about voting against any development in his area. I don't know what it'll take for people to see what you are saying
collaborative··on Shorts risks cannibalising core YouTube business, say senior staff
Would Youtube make financial sense without a "free" tier that includes ads? Would people use it? Would creators on Youtube even be found?

The few people donating money will never donate enough to sustain the platform that also serves non-donating users. And those same people that donate will never even find any platform that hasn't already become popular thanks to the free ad-supported tier. There's no way out. The griftnet is here to stay

collaborative··on Microsoft had three staff at Australian data centre campus when Azure went out
Guessing affected customers had to spend time and effort on top of ongoing high cloud bills

I've slept so much better since I began hosting, producing energy, and cooling on-prem

collaborative··on Shorts risks cannibalising core YouTube business, say senior staff
Ads are a necessary outcome of users rejecting to pay for digital content 99.9% of the time
collaborative··on Social media decline: Users are shifting to messaging apps and group chats
That metric is never important. Brands have always lost money advertising. Spending on ads is seen as burning extra budget to stay ahead of the curve and remain relevant

They are simply digging trenches for survival and domination. That is why I believe brands with profits above average should be banned from spending on ads. They polute the market and decrease competition

collaborative··on Elixir saves Pinterest $2M a year in server costs
That's interesting, thank you! Now I have new things to learn on my list :)
collaborative··on Elixir saves Pinterest $2M a year in server costs
I'm a seasoned Java and Node developer, but have never touched Elixir/Erlang. Could you spell out for me the benefits Elixir provides over Java concurrent code? Is it actually a performance gain, or simply a nicer syntax? I am a bit confused by the claims of this post and of the earlier comment. Thanks a lot
collaborative··on Pricing your SaaS on the demand curve using the Pareto power law
Understood. I will offer a 4x tier to all my Android users. The new price will be 0.004 dollars. This will net me a 60% extra income

What does this rule say about street begging?
