I see your point.

I suggest "encrypted tunnels"

combyn8tor··on We're moving on from Firebase
I don't think it's a case for ML.

I always thought a rules "learning" mode in the emulator would be useful. While the mode is switched on, the rules are set to allow read/write everywhere. Run your app and simulate a typical end user interaction. After you're done, the learning mode writes a set of the most restrictive rules possible based on the data read/writes from the simulated interaction.

I think this would make a good starting point for new apps.

combyn8tor··on Recreating macOS’s Drift Screensaver with Rust and WASM
In the era of beige crt monitors and not caring about electricity consumption it was all the rage to personalise your screensaver. A lot of people used them to display personal pics of their animals, family, cars etc. in place of putting physical pics on the desk. In a corporate environment with uniforms people did what they could to add some flare :-)

Does anyone know what Firebase uses for their functions service?
combyn8tor··on Show HN: Reflio – Open-source affiliate program creator for SaaS
No probs, I run a niche gaming vpn service supporting a handful of games for Australian and New Zealand customers. It is mostly run out of a Discord server and any support work is handled via Discord PM's. All my new customers are from word of mouth and typically just get sent an invite to my Discord channel from existing customers. The website is pretty much an afterthought and to provide a bit of credibility.

That's pretty much what I'm after. Ideally the affiliate gets real $ in return for their referral instead of just credit for my service. I run a niche gaming vpn.

Last time I looked at your competitors nobody seemed to be doing it, so I implemented a halfway version myself. I currently generate a unique Stripe promo code for each new customer. If someone uses the promo code it gives them a small discount and gives the referrer credit against their account. Its not very popular as it stands.

Can I use promo codes instead of website tracking? Most of my new customers come from a Discord channel and never visit my website.

Is there a template for replying to hackernews posts linking to engineering articles?

1. Cherry pick a piece of info 2. Claim it's not that hard/impressive/large 3. Claim it can be done much simpler with <insert database/language/hardware>

Isn't it possible they're just talking about what their media advisers wrote for them? It doesn't mean they didn't set the agenda.

combyn8tor··on Australia ranked 61/63 countries for entrepreneurship
> other people's financial position

IMO this is pretty much top of the priorities in Sydney. How much money someone is perceived to have is usually intertwined into their description along with where they live and how much money their parents have.

There are various issues but as others have mentioned tall poppy syndrome is a big factor in Australia that prevents people from trying. Outside of a very small group of tech/VC people, friends/family/associates will be lining up to watch you fail. Unlike the US, failure is not a commendable outcome so there is increased social risk. This also translates to lower job prospects if you try to get back into the market after a startup failure.
combyn8tor··on Show HN: Appwrite – Open-Source and Self Hosted Firebase Alternative
You can validate the data with Firebase rules. The other data can be updated with Firebase functions. They listen for state changes on the relevant data and then update the data that the user does not have access to.
combyn8tor··on HTTP/3 Is Fast
A CDN solves those issues and is significantly faster than HTTP3 in your use case... why the hate for them? The centralised aspect?

It's pretty dam close to native. I would consider researching it again. You could do away with Electron altogether and just run it in browser. You can make it a PWA to give it that "Native app" feel so the users are none the wiser but you don't have to deal with the complexities of Electron and managing releases etc. If you want to launch a new release just deploy it to your web host and you're done for all platforms.

This is all assuming there isn't some specific OS level requirements in your app. I know there are other video editors using WASM successfully and apps like Figma.

Interested to hear if you considered compiling Rust to WASM and what your thoughts were?
combyn8tor··on WireGuard for Windows now uses high speed kernel implementation
Okay that makes sense, thanks for the info. I'm new to Windows networking and thought WireguardNT was somehow using a WFP callout to encrypt plus reroute packets and then drop the original. Keep up the great work you're doing!
combyn8tor··on WireGuard for Windows now uses high speed kernel implementation
Hi Jason, are there any plans for process based routing within the WindowsNT driver? For example, if a Windows user wanted to route only Chrome through a Wireguard tunnel but leave all other applications network traffic untouched.
combyn8tor··on How Discord Stores Billions of Messages (2017)
Well on one hand you've got engineers at a billion dollar company explaining how they've solved a problem. On the other hand you've got some random commentor on HN over-simplifying a complex engineering solution.
combyn8tor··on Red Ventures has turned very specific advice into very big business
Ethics aside, that is pretty clever.
