coxmi··on What seven hours in London teaches me about surveillance capitalism
The author, Brett Scott, has recently released a book called "Cloudmoney: Why the War on Cash Endangers Our Freedom": https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/cloudmoney-cash-cards-crypto...

There's also a good long form interview with him here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4f3PN4UOMA8

coxmi··on The Muddled Origins of the Word 'Viking'
It's the same in Middle English (-wic), which is still present in the names of old market towns by rivers like Greenwich or the street name Aldwych (i.e. something like "old village") in London.
coxmi··on The truth is always made of details
This is a great hacker news meme, but a map is still obviously useful.

To analyse the map, its author and its purpose, is just as useful as getting into the weeds and understanding the terrain.

What use would knowing the terrain be if you can’t share your mental model of it with someone else?

coxmi··on Web components will outlive JavaScript frameworks
I don’t see how light DOM slots could work since it’s just replacing element.innerHTML, but a non-style-encapsulating shadow DOM option would be great.

That, and some progress on template instantiation, reactive DOM primitives or DOM partials, so we don’t have to concatenate strings and overwrite el.shadowRoot.innerHTML, or do direct DOM manipulation for any updates.

Until that all exists, and there’s a simple API to bring it all together, other frameworks will eat this space completely.

coxmi··on How to Make Your Own Spooky Magic Eye Pictures (Autostereograms)
Can anyone else not see the image? I can unfocus my eyes a little, but what I think is mostly happening is that I’m just slightly crossing my eyes so it doesn’t work.

Is it better on a non-phone screen?

coxmi··on The Segal method and the UK's self-build movement
There's also a brief video here describing one of the community projects in London: https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2015/sep/16/anarchism-com...
coxmi··on The Web Is for User Agency
This is a fantastic essay, not just about the web, really, but technological or industrial artefacts in general.

I’ve often mused on my role as a developer, thinking really that we’re just another set of gatekeepers. Within normal economic relations at work, it seems we’re often taking agency from users and gifting power to others.

This isn’t anything new, and we need to not be blinded by technocratic ideas of efficiency or technological progress, as if they’re not deeply political terms.

It’s very telling that we’re regurgitating Keynes’ idea, from the mid 20th century, that growth, technology and automation will liberate us from work, when it’s done nothing of the sort.

coxmi··on Payload 2.0: Postgres, Live Preview, Lexical RTE, and More
Yep! There are probably issues with this setup, but I wrote a small plugin to allow them to work in the same repo, sharing the same express instance: https://github.com/coxmi/astro-payload-plugin

Because of various ES module/CJS issues I had to bundle payload with esbuild and change the extension to cjs. The config wasn't being properly found/parsed by their webpack/ts-node setup, and because payload loads its own config in dev mode, it's all a bit complicated. This was the easiest fix I could find.

My example repo can be found here: https://github.com/coxmi/astro-payload-example

Which was sort-of based on Payload's own custom server example here: https://github.com/payloadcms/payload/tree/main/examples/cus...

coxmi··on Payload 2.0: Postgres, Live Preview, Lexical RTE, and More
I bundled it with esbuild for an astro/payload monorepo setup and it worked fine.
coxmi··on Payload 2.0: Postgres, Live Preview, Lexical RTE, and More
Great to see 2.0 launching, there’s some really great stuff in here!

Very exciting to see open source alternatives to the other headless content management systems that put developer experience as highly as editor experience, like Sanity, DatoCMS, or Contentful.

We’ll be switching to Payload very soon for all of our new internal and client projects after we’ve had a chance to play around with this release.

coxmi··on Organization probably doesn't want to improve things
Something along the lines of: A socioeconomic order centered around common ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange that allocates products to everyone in the society based on need.

I guess the point of the poster above is that the word communism just confuses things in the initial statement — it’s just a dictatorship. Socialists and communists fairly uniquely believe in workplace democracy.
