dataking··on Some observations on the final text of the European Digital Identity framework
I believe it is well understood by now that users tend to ignore security warnings; anyone serious about computer security will not accept this as a solution. We don't even apply security-critical patches reliably.
dataking··on Some observations on the final text of the European Digital Identity framework
I frequently travel to the EU and the amount of cookie banners is decidedly higher.
dataking··on Some observations on the final text of the European Digital Identity framework
A reasonable concern here is that power is transfered from subject matter experts to technocrats with a poor track record of making technical decisions. Some recent examples of EU tech debacles include Quaero, Galileo, Gaia-X, Ariane 6.
dataking··on The first two custom silicon chips designed by Microsoft for its cloud
I was under the impression they had their chips manufactured by SMIC.
dataking··on Why does so much government tech investment deliver so little?
> Why are all of these examples of successful government tech investment so old?

There are indeed newer examples such as GPS, RF-CMOS, Lidar, Siri, mRNA vaccines that DARPA invested in one way or another. Not saying they are as spectacular as the internet.

dataking··on Sudo-rs' first security audit
This is a logic error whereas Rust delivers a way to drive down memory errors (assuming parent comment isn't mocking Rust advocates).
dataking··on Leaked Microsoft pay guidelines – salary, hiring bonus, stock awards by level
Lots or reporting requirements only take effect once a firm reaches a certain size. This makes a lot of sense given that tiny firms (say less than 10 employees) may not have formalized wage scales, in-house administrative staff, and have a harder time amortizing compliance costs. So yes, there are disadvantages to consider.
dataking··on Platform that enables Windows driver development in Rust
I'm not aware that C# has security or reliability advantages over Rust. It may be better integrated into the Microsoft ecosystem but from the point of view of a driver developer who has to support more than one OS, Rust would seem to be a good tradeoff between security, performance, and reliability vs. C/C++.

Immunant | Software Engineer | REMOTE | Full-time | https://www.immunant.com

If you have recent, professional experience with C/C++ and Rust and know about operating systems, hypervisor internals, or compilers, we might have a job that fits your qualifications and interests. Folks with superficial knowledge in one of these areas are not encouraged to apply. Please note that we can only consider candidates resident in the US.

We offer a remote-friendly, collaborative work environment with high flexibility and competitive benefits.

Send your resume to team@immunant.com; we look forward to meeting you.

dataking··on Writing Python like Rust (2020)
> Unlike in a strongly typed language, the python type annotations aren’t enforced.

Python is a strongly typed language but type checks happen at runtime rather than ahead of time [0]. The author is correct that the type annotations aren't enforced.

dataking··on Appleseed – open-source, physically-based global illumination rendering engine
Filament is a real-time renderer, appleseed is an offline renderer.
dataking··on The Move to Memory-Safe Programming
... which is still a net win given that logic errors, AFAIK, take more effort to locate and exploit. (If someone has hard data that prove or disprove this, please share.)
dataking··on Emitting Safer Rust with C2Rust
> The date at the bottom of the article is 2022-06-13

The date was wrong; sorry, my mistake. The article reflects progress as of early January 2023. We're actively working on the lifting feature and will post a follow-up post once the tooling are sufficiently mature to be tested by the community.

dataking··on Emitting Safer Rust with C2Rust
Can confirm that the output of c2rust currently suffer because the refactoring tool needs to be revived. We will get to it eventually but we don't have a firm date :/
dataking··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2023)
Immunant | Software Engineer, Senior Software Engineer | REMOTE (US-only) | Full-time | https://www.immunant.com

Are you experienced with both C and Rust? Do you know OS, compiler, or emulator internals? Are you interested in binary analysis and rewriting ELF files? If you can demonstrate one or more years of hands-on experience in one of these areas, we'd like to hear from you.

Immunant is helping its customers deploy Rust code alongside or in place of C/C++. We are looking for a fellow systems programming expert to help us harden and optimize components used across the internet. Most of our team is fully remote. Check out some of our work at https://www.github.com/immunant

Please note that we're unable to consider applications from candidates outside the US.

Send applications to team@immunant.com – please mention HN in subject line. We look forward to connect!

dataking··on Dinner for one: A little-known British comedy famous in Germany
Can confirm; couldn’t have said it better myself!
dataking··on The Transistor of 2047: Expert Predictions
To be fair, they predict that transistors will be everywhere including places where they (mostly) aren't found today such as in our bodies and close to our food.
dataking··on ASML looking to finally get ahead of Moore’s Law
According to Jim Keller, yes, there is. If my memory serves, he said so in a recent Lex Friedman interview.

dataking··on Some companies find only humans can do the job
We'll have increasingly more incentive if birthrates (and thus the size of the workforce) continues to shrink. Moreover, robots of all sorts will probably have come down in price which is one of the stumbling blocks mentioned in the article.
dataking··on The pool of talented C++ developers is running dry
Immunant offers no-crypto remote Rust work. Send resume to team@immunant.com
dataking··on C2Rust Transpiler
Can confirm it is broken. With a little luck, it should be back up and running early next week.

We are currently considering both freelancers and candidates for full-time positions as long as your technical skills fit the position. People with minimal or modest exposure to systems programming are not encouraged to apply.

Please send your CV to team@immunant.com. We are unable to consider candidates outside of the US. Please mention HN in the subject so we know you pay attention to detail. We look forward to hearing from you.

dataking··on Australia gov wants telco Optus to pay for new passports for data breach victims
The whole idea of forming a business entity is to limit the liability of its principals. This is an important incentive to make people go into business without risking their home and whatnot. Let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater.
dataking··on Danish Data Protection Agency concludes Google Analytics cannot be used lawfully
Thanks for you summary! I, for one, needed it. Can you comment on why the BSB found that anonymized IP addresses are personal data (3rd point). Is it because the anonymization is too weak?

Edit: seems GA only masks the last octet of an IP4 address.

dataking··on Danish Data Protection Agency concludes Google Analytics cannot be used lawfully
> Is there any other industry where the client is responsible for making sure the service or product is legal and not the producer?

Let's remember, for context, that the EU is saying that the US is an "unsafe" third party country. While this is certainly true under a given definition of safe/unsafe, I doubt (m)any European citizens can point to harm as a direct result of their data being subpoenaed under the US CLOUD act. I am not saying there isn't a real problem but as I mentioned in another comment, the US and EU have agreed "in principle" on a third privacy shield to satisfy concerns on both sides and we are now waiting for it to be codified and tested in courts.

dataking··on Danish Data Protection Agency concludes Google Analytics cannot be used lawfully
I'm not sure this is correct. The EU and US agreed "in principle" on a new privacy shield in the spring of this year [0]. Maybe third time is the charm? (I think this is the third attempt.)

Immunant | Irvine, CA | Software Engineer | FREELANCE or FULL-TIME | REMOTE (US residents only)

Immunant is a motley crew of nerds who likes to write Rust but not for the blockchain. Instead, we focus on operating systems development, security hardening, and code migration to Rust. The code we help write run on millions of devices and must resist attempts at tampering and exploitation.

If you are a dedicated systems programmer with substantial C/C++ or Rust knowledge and the ability to solve problems in a minimally terrible, minimally fragile, and reasonably clear way, we'd love to hear from you. We'll currently consider both experienced freelancers and exceptionally strong candidates for full-time positions.

Please send your CV to team@immunant.com. We are unable to consider candidates outside of the US. Please mention HN in the subject so we know you pay attention to detail. We look forward to hearing from you.
