dataking··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2022)
Immunant | Irvine, CA | Software Engineer | FREELANCE or FULL-TIME | REMOTE (US residents only)

Immunant is a boutique systems programming firm with a focus on operating systems development, security hardening, and code migration to Rust. The code we help write run on millions of devices and must resist attempts at tampering and exploitation.

If you are a dedicated systems programmer with substantial C/C++ or Rust knowledge and the ability to solve problems in a minimally terrible, minimally fragile, and reasonably clear way, we'd like to hear from you. We prefer freelancers at this time but we will also consider exceptionally strong candidates for full-time positions.

Please send your CV to team@immunant.com. We are unable to consider candidates outside of the US. Please mention HN in the subject so we know you pay attention to detail. We look forward to hearing from you.

dataking··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (August 2022)
SEEKING FREELANCER | REMOTE (United States)

Immunant is looking for seasoned developers with clear and demonstrable experience with:

1. C/C++ development including secure coding practices, fuzzing, use of sanitizers, exploit mitigations, and a robust understanding of debuggers, compilers, and emulators.

2. Rust development, including substantial knowledge of how Rust interoperates with C/C++ via bindgen, cxx, and its foreign function interface. A robust understanding of cargo, rustc, and the most popular packages for systems programming is expected.

Minimum soft skills: the ability to express yourself clearly in writing and verbally. The ability to plan, track, document, and execute on tasks with minimal supervision.

Bonus skills: build systems (make, cmake, bazel), scripting in Python. Exploit development, compiler development, kernel development, hypervisors. These skills are in addition to the base skills listed under 1 and 2, not a substitute.

Recruiters and developers that do not clearly meet the above criteria are not encouraged to reach out.

Immunant offers attractive working conditions with an attractive compensation package, knowledgeable and helpful colleagues, and a work environment designed to be maximally reasonable and sustainable (i.e., not leading to burn out or excessive frustration).

Email your resume to team@immunant.com. We are unable to consider freelancers outside of the United States regardless regardless of skill, nationality, etc. Please mention HN in the subject so we know you've read our posting carefully. We look forward to your mail!

dataking··on San Francisco raises Tesla 'self-driving' safety concerns as public test nears
Instead of using the Edison device, as far as I understand, Theranos performed blood testing using traditional providers but hid this fact from investors. FSD, on the other hand, is something 3rd parties can evaluate on their own, the flaws are there for all to see. Hype, while not always okay, isn't fraud.
dataking··on Moderna's Financials

dataking··on OpenAI Sold its Soul for $1B
Their mission of making AI available to a broad section of society vs concentrating power among a few special interests justifies the name as far as I’m concerned. The name open does not have to mean “everything is FOSS and available on GitHub” in my opinion.

dataking··on Unintended Instructions on x86
The term unintended instructions is common in the infosec community and was (as far as I know) popularized by the seminal paper on ROP https://hovav.net/ucsd/dist/geometry.pdf

I'm sure different terms are used in other communities.

dataking··on Constantine: Automatic side-channel resistance using data flow linearization [pdf]
I don't think they are overclaiming. From the abstract:

> we present Constantine, a compiler-based system to automatically harden programs against microarchitectural side channels [...]

> secret dependent control and data flows are completely linearized (i.e., all involved code/data accesses are always executed).

Their goal is to hide microarchitectural events from a passive or active observer. As a side note, the VUSec research group helped discover microarchitectural side channels such as Rogue In-Flight Data Load [0] and I'm sure they know the difference between earlier work on timing and microarchitectural side channels.

dataking··on Apple’s M1 Positioning Mocks the Entire x86 Business Model
> This is clearly wrong as they are still selling Intel versions of the MacBook and MacMini

I can think of other reasons some customers may prefer or need to buy the Intel version. AFAIK, you cannot run virtualized x86 code (docker, parallels, vmware) on the M1 macs (yet?) or maybe you need a driver for HW that is not yet available for M1/ARM. You can't conclude that they sell Intel versions for performance reasons.
