dc-programmer··on Ask HN: Where are the interesting conversations?
Is this perception or reality though? Anecdotally, I don’t know a single person who has been “cancelled”. I share non-orthodox ideas in public all the time and in the worst case scenario it causes a few people not to like me. But who cares
dc-programmer··on Why Adults Care What Young People Think
Im on the younger end and I don’t agree with this analysis at all. If it were true you’d see people converging to handful of worldviews espoused by experts which does not map to reality at all.

The truth is humans aren’t optimization machines that gravitate towards high quality inputs. There’s a massive emotional component to learning and development that can’t be ignored. A child will take to the opinions of people they have an emotional connection too over whatever google spits out.

The thing is at a certain age peers become more important than family in terms of emotional connection, at which point adults become to feel alienated. But this is not new, adolescents aren’t basically wired by evolution to break from their elders.

Nixon was the last “liberal” president. Not really surprising no meaningful reform has been pushed through since him
dc-programmer··on Ask HN: Do you still buy physical tech books like “Learn Rust” or “Learn Go”?
Yes. The clarity of graphics and diagrams is often degraded when shown on a device. In the past I tried getting around this by using one of those jumbo sized tablets but that was too hard on my eyes (even after turning on night mode). If there something akin to a massive kindle out there, I would give it another go.
dc-programmer··on Ask HN: Inherited the worst code and tech team I have ever seen. How to fix it?
The NGINX config description actually had me laughing out loud. That one seems particularly heinous.
dc-programmer··on Ask HN: I'm considering taking a break from startups to join big tech
That may be a little too harsh. I will say for me that startups are not able to provide the work experiences I’m interested in due to their size
dc-programmer··on Super apps are proliferating across emerging markets
Awesome insights, thanks for sharing
dc-programmer··on US border forces are seizing Americans' phone data and storing it for 15 years
Thanks for the info, I was wondering what all was involved. I still think that falls under the mundane
dc-programmer··on US border forces are seizing Americans' phone data and storing it for 15 years
Does biometric here mean your passport photo? I totally believe this is the official name, but the nomenclature definitely opens up the possibility of concept creep so that biometric data can mean anything from the mundane to the terrifying
dc-programmer··on Suspected counterfeit components found in ejection seat after fatal F-16 crash
Not sure if you’ve heard but he got in a little trouble for not registering as a foreign agent
dc-programmer··on Google employees alarmed that the company suddenly expects them to do work
The litmus test is “would cloudflare take them as a customer?” If the answer is no then it’s a red-blooded American publication, if it’s yes then it’s a commie rag
dc-programmer··on Suspected counterfeit components found in ejection seat after fatal F-16 crash
He definitely was not involved in the low level grifts but the fish rots from the head
dc-programmer··on Google employees alarmed that the company suddenly expects them to do work
Going to have to steal “load bearing comment”
dc-programmer··on Suspected counterfeit components found in ejection seat after fatal F-16 crash
I saw a gap to make that point and shot it. There is definitely formidable institutional inertia blocking meaningful change. I’m hoping history does rhyme and we’ll see an adoption of civil service reform policies by both parties like in the late 1800s
dc-programmer··on Suspected counterfeit components found in ejection seat after fatal F-16 crash
This is why folks like Michael Flynn should be no where near positions of power in the military hierarchy
dc-programmer··on A message from Twilio CEO Jeff Lawson: 11% workforce cut
More of a nitpick but was the USSR not considered a imperialist polity? The ubiquity of the Russian language in Central Asia seems like a strong artifact of colonialism. Even today, Russia is throwing people and resources largely from the (non-slavic) provinces and satellite states at Ukraine. Even in the United States, Eastern Europeans immigrants were quick to assert themselves in the racial hierarchy in places like Chicago.

I’m not saying this to implicate or unimplicate anyone really. It’s more to point out morally elevating one group of people over others (western vs Eastern Europeans) to make a rhetorical argument doesn’t really hold up to scrutiny because of the contradictions inherit in all people and countries.

dc-programmer··on Ask HN: Cloud certifications and job prospects. Is there a real connection?
I see how people come to adopt this perspective. However, because so many tech workers appear ambivalent about their job and tech in general, any signal indicating effort to take control of their career direction is positive.

Every member of a software team does not need to super star autodidact. In a lot of cases it would actually be counterproductive to have such a composition.

dc-programmer··on Kevins got a bad rap in France
Keep fighting the good fight
dc-programmer··on Patreon Lays off 17% of Staff
Maybe I’m biased due to the content I subscribe to, but Patreon seems to be going for a more sophisticated aesthetic. This comes through even in the name. The word Patreon conjures images of the Medici’s and “elevated” art forms. I think if they started to cater to the NSFW side of things it would result in brand confusion for producers and consumers.
dc-programmer··on Why are 20-somethings lonelier and more sex-deprived than ever?
Why do these articles never include economic considerations in their analysis? I wouldn’t say culture is entirely downstream of material conditions…but it’s close
dc-programmer··on Jackson’s water crisis: latest updates
The state government of Mississippi, probably one of the worst in the developed world, has been known to impede Jackson from receiving block grants it is eligible for. A massive scandal is coming to a head where a whistleblower allegedly discovered that 70 million dollars of federal welfare funds where diverted to the ex-governors slush fund which he used to enrich allies such as Brett Favre. In a state that consistently finishes last along any dimension important to measure.
dc-programmer··on Transcending Posix: The End of an Era?
There is the alternative of an object based interface like Windows offers.

I thought it was an interesting idea until I actually got around to experimenting with Powershell recently. The ergonomics are more akin to Python than any of the GNU tools. I can’t help but wonder why not just use a language like Python rather than a heavyweight scripting language if it’s a similar LOE (speaking in general, I’m aware of CLR)? The benefit of the text based interface to me is the expediency of performing one-off CLI actions. I inclined think an object interface actually impedes this goal.

dc-programmer··on Campus College of Letters and Science plans to limit high-demand majors
I think it’s more of a matching problem. There are lots of students who get nothing out of CS classes. Ideally we would match the available slots with the students with the highest analytical aptitude.
dc-programmer··on 'Serious errors' in research linking deaths to red meat
Personally this is one of the reasons I chose to go into software instead of statistics when I was a young math major. The idea that you could make a small mistake that invalidates all your work and you might not even know it until much later or even never always made me uncomfortable. With software I can write tests till my neuroticism has been placated
dc-programmer··on Nano-nonsense: 25 years of charlatanry (2010)
People joke about how hard it is to exit vim but I don’t think I’ve ever been able to exit nano without just closing the tab
dc-programmer··on Pakistan's floods have created 100km-wide inland lake, satellite images
I don’t disagree with the analysis but the thought that crossed my mind reading it is that the developed world is trending towards the Pakistans of the world, not away.

Every year kleptocracy and corruption become more normalized and the “me-first” popular movements that have arisen as a response to elite corruption are wholly unequipped to correct course. I am not optimistic my country will properly account for the long effects of climate change on human well-being.

dc-programmer··on What does it take to be a good programmer?
I don’t doubt your abilities but I personally will always go with the choice that bounds the maximum risk to myself and the company every time
dc-programmer··on The silent majority in software
It’s definitely not a solved problem. Most developers absolutely would not escape their outputs if left to their own devices
dc-programmer··on What does it take to be a good programmer?
What you are saying absolutely makes sense to me for domains like device drivers.

I think it becomes a lot more questionable when your coworker wants to write their own JSON parser or HTTP server for use on a commodity x86 linux box. It’s an incredible waste of resources and a major security hazard too boot.

dc-programmer··on Why aren't there C conferences? (2018)
I’d assume the average practitioner who attends systems conferences uses C as one of their primary languages. It seems like it would be redundant to have a language specific conference when it would overlap so much in form and audience with the systems oriented ones
