dc-programmer··on What Peter Thiel and Others Are Learning from Curtis Yarvin and the New Right
This whole movement is a thinly veiled power play; there is zero intellectual depth to it. The whole thing reduces down to Thiel wanting to place himself and his friends at the top of the hierarchy. The line in the article about replacing the bureaucrats in government with political appointees was pretty telling. I’d assume these goons would sell off the government to the likes of Palantir.

And the tie-in to left wing economics is a complete sham - this ecosystem of “influencers” co-opt communist aesthetics to broaden their appeal. I regrettably looked through socially conservative communist Reddit recently and there was zero talk of economics. All I saw was naked racism and people saying they converted to fundamentalist Islam or became a Trad Cath in order to return to a more traditional way of life.

dc-programmer··on CNN+ streaming service is shutting down a month after launching
Opinionated hosts and guests is the only path to profitability for cable news. Most people read or listen to their news now; TV is for entertainment.

CNN’s problem is that their “personalities” are absolute snore-fests. Fox’s bread and butter are their hosts but they are doing fine for now (cable will die eventually). In the current post-ironic zeitgeist, audiences are drawn to more transgressive discourse. But Don Lemon can’t make hot takes when his audience is Deloitte managers and urban moms (also he’s terminally unfunny).

The left leaning media has become too safe and staid. I think that’s why left sympathetic people are drawn to the new “left” podcasts like Chapo Trap House

dc-programmer··on Does anyone else think Google search quality has gone downhill fast?
I agree Google’s quality has declined. But has anyone else noticed the ubiquity of these types of posts? Is this some kind of guerrilla marketing campaign for a stealth startup? If so, can they do iMessage next?
dc-programmer··on CatalanGate: Spyware operation against Catalans using Pegasus and Candiru
Yeah that was whack
dc-programmer··on The Strange Afterlife of Pontius Pilate (2016)
There is a theory that there were two competing early Christian factions: one, led by Jesus’s brother (or kin), viewed the movement as a continuation of Judaism; the other following the vision of Paul who wanted to proselytize the gentiles. The theory goes Paul made the religion decidedly not Jewish to increase its appeal. I guess adult males did not want to get circumcised. Paul’s Hellenized vision was clearly the one that won out in this scenario.

I couldn’t tell you how widely accepted this theory is however (or the motivations of its progenitor). Biblical studies seems like an area where the orthodoxy is constantly shifting.

dc-programmer··on Americans are drowning in spam
This happens to me as well. At first I thought maybe they are trying to contact my number’s previous owner. But I also regrettably replied to one message which ended the conversation. I think it’s spammers trying to see if a real, responsive person is behind the number. Recently I’ve been receiving phishing links based around another scenario
dc-programmer··on CatalanGate: Spyware operation against Catalans using Pegasus and Candiru
Catalonian secession would precipitate a similar push by the Basque region. From what I understand, these are two of the wealthiest areas in Spain, so them leaving would be a huge blow.

Another reason for the lack of support is that other countries don’t want to create a precedent for similar breakaways. Catalonia would have a hard time joining the EU for this reason (similarly Scotland if they were to secede).

The second reason hints at the explanation for the difference to other regions of the world. There is no hard and fast rule to apply to see why self-determinism is championed for one group but admonished for others. The sentiment is wholly a consequence of the motivations of the country in question and other interested nations.

Any moral rhetoric deployed by nations to justify policy is just post hoc rationalization of the underlying pragmatic decision making calculus. I think most people implicitly understand this. Which is why I’m incredulous when people act surprised by governments acting hypocritically

dc-programmer··on Americans’ views on the war reveal a striking generational divide
There are people out there who are weirdly pro-russia. Oliver Stone was gassing Putin up for years, defending his actions such as his anti-gay legislation. The Putin documentary he created was nothing short of a hagiography.

The ostensible reasons would be he wants to stick it to America or that he likes the attention his contrarian opinions give him (which is much less in our transgressive age). Maybe some people naturally gravitate to authoritarians. One interesting fact though is that his son worked at RT.

It’s all deeply weird to me. I try to grapple with it intellectually but it’s beyond my comprehension. If you are someone who truly believes America is irredeemable, why wouldn’t you esteem more peace loving nations over countries with overt expansionist intentions?

What kind of biking do you do?
dc-programmer··on Kaspersky is declared a US national security threat and is banned by the FCC
The Stuxnet association seems completely basis, and you do not provide any evidence for the assertion. There were multiple firms and individuals responsible for the discovery, reverse engineering, and attribution of Stuxnet, so you are overplaying their involvement.

This decision was certainly made by a bureaucrat who may not even know about Stuxnet. It’s simple risk mitigation. Why even take the chance Kaspersky is a malicious entity? It’s not important software.

Some of the conspiracy theories people throw out around here…

dc-programmer··on On the Weaponisation of Open Source
Yes because in vs. out group behavior started in the 1500s..
dc-programmer··on I'm Too Risk-Averse for Index Investing
One thing missing from the analysis is that many index funds pay dividends. So even if your country is having a rough decade, fund holders are getting paid the whole time. Additionally index funds are tax efficient with low management costs so that has to be considered when comparing to individual stocks as well.

More saliently, (1) it’s hard to identify value stocks and (2) the time frames he was looking at are not that long. I feel fairly confident that markets will be way up in 50 years if for no reason other than technological progress

dc-programmer··on Kharkiv Rubyist during the war: We are still here
I think it’s too soon to make an assessment. Trump spent his whole presidency casting aspersions on NATO, and tried to cut defense aid to Ukraine. If this situation escalates further, he may be viewed as a James Buchanan figure.

And I do think things may get worse. Currently a sovereign country is being invaded and civilians are being targeted. The second order effects might be even worse

* If Russia pulls resources from Syria then the civil war might come to a head. The regime leans heavily on Russian air support

* Russian paramilitary provides defense for unpopular governments like Tanzania’s. If they got pulled these countries might go into civil war

* Ukraine and Russia are two of the worlds largest exporters of grain. Countries like Egypt are big importers (Egypt actually subsidizes the purchases heavily). If grain costs go up (and other commodities like oil) this could cause unrest

* Nuclear war

* Cyber war targeting key infrastructure. The possibility of massive collateral damage is high (see Not Petya)

Some of these things are not intrinsically bad (I have no love for despotic governments for example) but the potential sum total of events could throw the world into chaos.

The War on Terror was a massive mistake. America needs to keep the crazy evangelicals who want to bring on the end times by attacking the Middle East far from the oval office. But taking on an isolationist position in response to the 2000’s would be a massive mistake. It’s clearer than ever that power vacuums have to be filled

dc-programmer··on CIA black site detainee served as training prop to teach torture techniques
I wasn’t talking about the contents of this article, just taking the opportunity to pile in on the libertarians. Their should absolutely be consequences for this
dc-programmer··on CIA black site detainee served as training prop to teach torture techniques
Anything short of libertarian anarchy is a dystopia to these folks. You would actually think that people with a “rationalist” bias would care more about outcomes than elevating deontological ideals above all else but I guess not
dc-programmer··on Strava abruptly ends 3rd party data sync to Apple Health
It’s more of an aspirational wall. If they could get away with it, 3rd party software on the Mac would go the way of the headphone jack
dc-programmer··on Strava abruptly ends 3rd party data sync to Apple Health
Apple’s garden (orchard?) is famously walled. This just means they intentionally make their hardware incompatible with other hardware/software. Presumable so you have to buy more Apple stuff
dc-programmer··on How CNN's Jeff Zucker and His Cronies Manipulated the News
Maybe progressives aren’t willing to support their “own” unconditionally? These aren’t sports teams. Bad behavior hurts us all and should be called out regardless of it’s on your side or not
dc-programmer··on To understand what is wrong with the west, think of libraries
The internet, GPS, nuclear energy, novel vaccines, the interstate system, space flight, the Panama Canal, electrification of Appalachia, 99% adult literacy. Yup glad we didn’t need government action to get these done

Most of the highlights of Western Civ have been a result of collective action. If anything the libertarian mythos that was synthesized in the late 70s is our greatest weakness.
