deepstack··on The future of Nginx: Getting back to our open source roots
glad someone mentioned it, browserify is way simpler to use and bundle. But now we have esBuild!
deepstack··on Why Apple Will Switch to ARM-Based Macs (2014)
>>On the Intel front, Apple saw how underperforming, short lasting battery and hot the 12” MacBook was.

Then they saw how performant, long battery lasting and cool their iPad (ARM chip) was.

This became an easy decision for Apple to ditch Intel when they saw how much better their own iPad Pro was relative to the 12” Intel MacBook.

For those who have being using Mac since the PowerPC days all have used this argument against X86 chips. As you all know, Apple actually had to switched from RISC chips to Intel X86 chips, before they switched back to ISAs chips now. Just saying performance is not the main reason to switch chip sets.

deepstack··on Stripe down for 4 hours (and counting) for all those with Stripe Tax enabled
Yeah that's tech for you! E4X was a ES standard, but Mozilla dropped it in 2014, then FB pick it and made JSX and now that is the defacto "Front-End" development.
deepstack··on My take on how DuckDuckGo can outperform Google
would also like to hear from DDG ppl. On another note, Really appreciate DDG's map functionality using apple map with iaxm query parameter set "maps" and q set to whatever you want to search for:

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Africa&iaxm=maps

It is refreshing to be able to use a usable map on tor without having to accept google big term of service.

deepstack··on Connect-Web: TypeScript library for calling RPC servers from web browsers
>As your system gets bigger, and your teams get bigger, the value of a typed schema has a multiplicative effect on both reliability and productivity.

I often see this in arguments using in TypeScript vs plain JS debate. Is this really true in practice? Be good to get some more examples on this.

deepstack··on Google delays phasing out ad cookies on Chrome until 2024
that is fine. It is how user suppose to login to an authenticated area.
deepstack··on Google delays phasing out ad cookies on Chrome until 2024
exactly! web developer in the late 90's did that and worked fine. Yeah it is a bit more pain to use, however it keeps web stateless which was a what it suppose to be. If you want to make your fancy desktop stateful programs do it with something that is not document base like html.
deepstack··on Google delays phasing out ad cookies on Chrome until 2024
web pages do NOT need cookies or javascript period.

and if you insist on that your users must use javascript to view your web site, then cookie is not even needed, one can do some finger printing and there is your permanent cookie!

This development of web has many tech savvy people stop using internet on their phone and switched back to old dump phones (and this comes from someone who has being promoting JS since before nodejs came along). Please bring back web pages that does not require cookie or javascript to function, a web page that can work in the terminal browser like lynx or links2 is the base standard for web page. JS and cookies are just icing on the cake not needed.

deepstack··on Google delays phasing out ad cookies on Chrome until 2024
interesting, do want more information on this. Can someone who work for Mozilla care to comment on this? If this is true, then I would rather be using brave or ungoogled chrome build than Firefox.
deepstack··on Bun: Fast JavaScript runtime, transpiler, and NPM client written in Zig
>I guess they'll move on somewhere else? Likelihood seems low, impact seems low. Why spend energy on it?

many services don't really migration of the data. Why would I want my data stuck some where?

deepstack··on Bun: Fast JavaScript runtime, transpiler, and NPM client written in Zig
however that fact that it is NOT using V8 is quite refreshing change. We need diversity in the JS eco system other than google v8. Didn't realize JavascriptCore is faster than v8.
deepstack··on Bun: Fast JavaScript runtime, transpiler, and NPM client written in Zig
yeah what happens if a few years down the road, the company decided to close the free accounts? To me for open source project we need a way to archive the discussion and make it public not tight to any company or so.
deepstack··on YouTube removes criticism of dangerous fractal wood burning, but leaves up tips
Or instead use specialised communities that does do moderation like peer tube, odysee.
deepstack··on Modern city dwellers have lost about half their gut microbes
Bingo, we are just bunch of bacteria walking around. Some organism become symbiotic over time like mitochondria, so it go incorporated into our cells to make energy. The whole concept that we as human-being is one organism needs to be revisited.
deepstack··on Ask HN: Do people want a LinkedIn alternative?
All I want is something that is NOT owned by a big corp, especially NOT MS, Google or Amazon.
deepstack··on Why Rust is a great choice for startups
Deno could be a good alternative. It should hit GA 3 QT this year.
deepstack··on Public CDNs Are Useless and Dangerous
And that is how we ended with the mess in this article. We are not doing kinder garden here, it is software development. And if one can't grasp idea of files on server (a very basic) then why are you even doing software development? The whole software development process has being watered down to included people who don't really want to do software development. I'm sure if one is passionate about it, they will figure this out.
deepstack··on We won the battle for Linux, but we're losing the battle for freedom (2016)
If you read Tim Wu's master switch, this is nothing new. There are certain people (technocrates, geeks too) like to consolidate and centralize stuff. Yes it makes things easier to manage and organise, however the cost is freedom.

A messier world with more freedom is always better for the public.

deepstack··on Public CDNs Are Useless and Dangerous
if someone can't figure how to put a file on the server, or install package then they shouldn't be in tech or software development.
deepstack··on Maud: A Rust macro for writing HTML
Hmm, I think a long time ago (around 2005 or 2006) JSX was briefly considered to be party of ES standard. It didn't make it, and shortly after FB introduced React.

Think it may have being easier if JSX is just included in ES as a standard. So yes and no, JSX introduced by FB via react is a just a syntax sugar, however the original JSX is a meant to be a ES standard, with each node as a tree structure.

deepstack··on Adminer: Database management in a single PHP file
just wonder isn't this same as login via db shell. psql or mysql whatever? Why do we need a php file to do that?
deepstack··on I disabled WiFi on the new Samsung fridge
As consumers, we ought to demand that. I like IoT, however if this is how the manufacturers gonna play it, I would rather have old stove and fridges with no internet access. Let's vote with our money.
deepstack··on Keep the web free, say no to Web3 (2021)
try search in HN, algolia is mining the data of HN for sure.
deepstack··on Before Ships Used GPS, There Was the Fresnel Lens
in android, the GPS config file (some xml) file will do the trick of making the at least the GPS/Location system on the phone unreliable. Apparently each country has their own config file. Found this out when a friend used the Android bought in China in US. So no GPS is NOT reliable for critical situations, it is more a consumer connivence ATM.
deepstack··on Arm Open Source makes a seamless migration to GitLab
otherwise, there are gittee etc that way more lightweight where you can self-host.
deepstack··on Arm Open Source makes a seamless migration to GitLab
main reason I use Gitlab instead of GitHub, MS. Won't touch a closed source MS project with 10 foot pole. Not after the all the backdoor they being putting in NT kernel, etc.
deepstack··on Taking a break from social media makes you happier and less anxious
Being off almost 10 years, life got significantly better and more interesting. Also stop using smart phone, or only use smart phone in airplane mode most of time. That also helped alot!
deepstack··on Our Experience Porting the YJIT Ruby Compiler to Rust
>I honestly love Ruby and Ruby on Rails, but I can't understand why companies like Shopify and Github go through so much effort to scale Ruby especially at their size. Maybe I am wrong, but couldn't this effort be put to rewriting parts of it in a more performant language like Go or Rust? One has to imagine that they have a large code base, how much developer time is spent writing Tests for Ruby? How much time was spent debugging odd monkey patching gems over the life of the codebase?

Me neither, especially there is crstal, a Ruby like syntax, that runs 3 times fast than go. Invidious, (youtube proxy) is written it it. Ruby developer ought to just switch to that for speed.

deepstack··on W3C Proposes the Creation of a WebView Community Group
sounds more like for maintainers from tauri. deno/rust/websymboly capacitorjs PWA group seems got the stuff right in this webview directions than monolitic electron. If we must go the chrome route, then NWJS would also be more preferred than Electron.
deepstack··on I'm all-in on server-side SQLite
a few years back working on Java project. Used H2 instead of postgres, and included H2 db as in application memory access. It speed up quries tremendously. There is just no beating in application db.
