deepstack··on The reMarkable as a notebook and eBook reader
often people want more feature, thinking more is better. iPad has color it is better right?

Personally I would pay more to have e-ink. Looking at it is like looking at paper! It is easier on the eyes, less drain on the battery. And most stuff software development wise, b&w is good enough.

deepstack··on IRCv3 Spec round-up
Ideally ALL protocol (by the definition of it) ought to be openly defined. The authentication to use the protocol is another thing. Of course, security by obscurity is how the banks talk to each other.
deepstack··on Microsoft blocks EdgeDeflector to force Windows 11 users into Edge
I wouldn't put anything pass these guys (MS). Don't think you are overly paranoid. With MS, they backdoors, one can NEVER be too paranoid.
deepstack··on Google Outage in Europe
Not really many open source project such as nextcloud, mattermost are easy to host your self, or the hosting provider provide it as an app.
deepstack··on Google Outage in Europe
More reason to promote for self-host, and decentralised systems like smtp, matrix.org, ActivityPub. The idea of having all the data and server concentrated in a few player such as google, amazon, ccp is not reliable for the digital operation of the planet.
deepstack··on Ask HN: Could VSCode be the new Emacs?
> Velocity

Hmm not so sure about that. The main reason that I have not complete switched over to VS Code, is that it feel klunky and I'm using a 16GB macbook pro, not top of the line, but something where I should expect a code editor would feel not so klunky.

deepstack··on Fabrik – A Visual Programming Environment (1988)
They are the ones that made the mouse.
deepstack··on People prefer friendliness, trustworthiness in teammates over skill competency
Really depending on the people. Sometime I prefer prefer friendliness over competence. However if the competency involves me doing work to cover for the other colleague, then I take unfriendliness and competent anytime.
deepstack··on Multiple vulnerabilities in WP Fastest Cache plugin
All user input need to sanitised or check agains a data structure validating that is a valid input. Especially something like table names.
deepstack··on Worst Case
While your analysis is sound, I wouldn't disregard a Carrington type of event. It can happen again and we never know where. None of our current electronic infrastructures are hardened to handle this kind solar storm/EMP. IPFS is a good direction in mitigate these kinds of centralised data risk.

Diversifying one's cloud/server provider is a good thing! Or simply don't rely only on the cloud. Storage devices are cheap now days, just have local backup and/or in different geographical location.

deepstack··on Mozilla to put ads in Firefox address bar suggestions
Wasn't Chrome originally a fork of WebKit when G and A are still buddy buddy?
deepstack··on Mozilla to put ads in Firefox address bar suggestions
>(don't mention Brave, I'm gonna get mad)

Just wonder the reason? Is it because it support the monopoly of google rendering engine? Or other reasons?

deepstack··on The naughty username checking system used by Twitch
would have being better to have the data source in a json/csv formate, like an array of RegExpression. SQL is not compatible with different dbs.
deepstack··on China prepares to test thorium-fuelled nuclear reactor
>While German politicians still ask for the internet to be printed for them.

as a tech guy, I must say I don't like reading anything on screen. Not even retina display. Something about having light emitting to my eyes makes it uncomfortable. Paper are just more pleasant to read. Hope they come up with better E-Ink type of tech soon.

deepstack··on The Perils of an .xyz Domain
Yikes, sounds like censorship for whole TLD.
deepstack··on Please stop closing forums and moving people to Discord
Reddit is a bad example. On smart phone they force you to use the app instead of the mobile web page. That doesn't happen with forum such as PHPBB. The exact reason why it is better to be a simple forum that works in simple browsers.
deepstack··on Functional programming is not popular because it is weird (2016)
> JavaScript became popular because of the browser

I would also say it is mainly due to Gmail and their G Maps extensive use of XMLHttpRequest, and Douglas Crockford insight on that JS has closure and function as first class citizen, it is just Scheme is C clothing. Check out his Little Javascripter. That and of course the intro of JSON.

deepstack··on Gmail is opening and caching URLs within emails without user intervention (2019)
That also include links sent on all major chat, in this day and age, if you not self-hosting, or E2E all your links will be minded by companies.
deepstack··on Google Groups kills RSS support without notice
Really hope you are right, that more normal non-tech user will start stop using google and all their services. Whenever a company monopolise product and services is not good for end users.
deepstack··on Nerds don't respond to marketing; try technical documentation instead
> Sounds good in theory. Remember this industry is full of hype and fad. Software developers like brand name like everyone else in other industry.

React, reactive, server-side rendering. software is a fashion industry.

deepstack··on Apple Has Opened the Backdoor to Increased Surveillance and Censorship
As a long time Apple user and developer (since black and white Apple II), I have witness the rise/fall/rise again/and now fall again of Apple. The future computer I WILL be Linux/FreeBSD for all important stuff.
deepstack··on How to Hack APIs in 2021
> the code errored or something else went wrong. You need to refresh the whole page if something goes wrong, which results in having to load a ton of JS every again, negating all possible savings in time and data usage.

Not to mention that some SPA doesn't maintain state, and all the sudden one need to jump through the the process all over again. Personally SPA seems to try reimplement a lot of browser feature all over again in client side JS.

deepstack··on No-code startup Bubble raises $100M
Yeah there is also stuff like ionic, even Vue has something like that with GUI. With stuff like this is great to prototype create a MPV. Machine generated code is hard for humane to debug, at some point, it will hit a limit that becomes harder and harder to debug and make changes.
deepstack··on Windows Defender blocks qBittorrent
For sure, then set the seeding and upload rate limit. In general torrent is still the more reliable (decentralised) ways to share large files.
deepstack··on Windows Defender blocks qBittorrent
Hmm, many Linux distro are distributed via Torrent. As well as many video platform also use webtorrent. It is a just protocol like http. And when one is downloading a really large file, torrent can arguably be much better than direct download.
deepstack··on Nerdy Reading
this might provide some background:

deepstack··on U.S. and key allies accuse China of Microsoft Exchange cyberattacks
>> Rather than withholding them, the United States Government recognized that these vulnerabilities could pose systemic risk and the National Security Agency notified Microsoft to ensure patches were developed and released to the private sector.

It is amazing that NSA had to notify Microsoft. You would thing a company with that much money like MS, they would have drop several millions on a few pen test, and independent security audit companies.

Digital security will never be trust unless these things are addressed in an open transparent way.

deepstack··on The Goals of XML at 25: and the one change that XML now needs
the only thing I can think is have binary data to be part of the document . I guess one can also use base64 string in JSON.
deepstack··on Cities try to phase out gas stoves but cooks are pushing back
Yes those touch pad control on the 'modern' electric stove are horrible. And some electric stoves when have liquid on the surface it just turn off.

Fire cooking is just much better for certain dishes. Stop with this electrifying and digitising everything.

deepstack··on Generating JSON Directly from Postgres
I would say 10 years ago yes. However now days with the way postgres is developing and with support for python/v8, and postgresREST. For db intensive stuff, it just make sense to do it in DB like postgres.
