deepstack··on Facebook users said no to tracking, and now advertisers are panicking
>That being said I dislike tracking not because I might get manipulated - I also prefer relevant ads. I dislike the fact that they can better target vulnerable groups - like depressed people with addictive personalities and gaming - this is the majority of app stores profit, I would bet it's a huge ad% as well - mobile gaming is basically milking people with low impulse control and nothing better to do with their time. It's just like those scamming telemarketing scum targeting old people

It is more push pull thing. - pull request for relavant ads, when I actively searching for something (and a search engine would be better). - push request for ads that is random. If I see something I like I'll click it.

deepstack··on Show HN: One-on-one calls with your followers on Twitter
How is this different from just using https://meet.jit.si ?
deepstack··on DuckDuckGo’s quest to prove online privacy is possible
>Ideally it would be continually audited by multiple trusted third parties.. something maybe like the EFF.

For a for profit company, the third parties such as EFF would be good enough for most users. Would highly recommend that EFF offer some sort of certificate (PGP signed key would be fine) to authenticate such audit.

deepstack··on New browser signal could make cookie banners obsolete
Instead of blocking cookies, work on more stuff that will block finger printing such as stuff that is mentioned in https://www.nothingprivate.ml

One spec could be split up the JS api into stuff that manipulate the dom and stuff that access GPU and other hardwares that may identify the browser or machine. Safari seems to be the only one that is doing anything in that area.

deepstack··on The future of data storage is still magnetic tape (2018)
Floppy days! Way back then I remember there are bootable linux or freebsd server running off a DVD disk. The idea is that the server data then is immutable.
deepstack··on Allies Believe U.S. 'No Longer a Good Model of Democracy,' Poll Shows

deepstack··on OpenHistoricalMap
>I have seen many issues with historical maps on Wikipedia, one of the worst offenders is https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Territories_of_Dynas... which is basically propaganda. We desperately need a new one with citations.

can you explain a bit more about that? Not too familiar with the background of Chinese map.

deepstack··on Don't Feed the Thought Leaders
This is an excellent break down. Remind me a lot of the mithril comparison page: https://mithril.js.org/framework-comparison.html

Definitely at stage 3, could also be the reason not as many people using it.

deepstack··on The brain isn’t supposed to change this much
this can also be an algorithm for an AI news writer.
deepstack··on Jailbroken iOS can't run macOS apps. I spent a week to find out why
Is the iOS kernel (Darwin based on FreeBSD) still open sourced?
deepstack··on Voice Assistant for VSCode
This is suppose to Free/Libre. Is the source code some where? Can't seem to find it. Also the homebrew seems to be broken.

deepstack··on Privacy – A curated list of services and alternatives that respect privacy
> Invidious And it skips ads, and if you are playing music on your mobile devices it allows you to turn off the screen and still play music. Invidious and Youtube are both a very good side by side comparison on what a video sharing site ought to be if it s build for user, vs build to extract information from user.
deepstack··on Sony discontinues its last DSLRs
isn't DSLR pretty much dominated by Canon and Nikon now days. Make sense Sony doesn't want to do it any more.
deepstack··on The Case of the 50ms request
I very much understand your frustration. Hate JS web page as well, but this kinda game multipage logic type of thing SPA is better. Just wish I can only give authorization to certain JS api.
deepstack··on Advancing Excel as a programming language [audio]
In some way sql programming like functions, cursor, store procedures is the Advance Excel programming. Why reinvent the wheel?

In regards to having JS/Python scripting it, if you using Postgres, just add v8 or python plugin, and there you have your advance excel programming in the language of your choice.

deepstack··on Advancing Excel as a programming language [audio]
there is already exceljs
deepstack··on Out-of-control Chinese rocket expected to fall to Earth in the coming days
I think the parent author is emphasizing that this culture of "Chabuduo" is not inherent to Chinese culture, rather it is may be something came out of getting rich fast scheme that is inherent to an emergent economic and industrial power.
deepstack··on British Virgin Islands corruption scandal threatens its tax haven reputation

deepstack··on .org doesn't mean credible
yeah it is a techy thing. Most people who are not techy use "WWW", we just got to go with this. Edit your web server config to handle that.
deepstack··on .org doesn't mean credible
>A site without a user facing login really doesn't need SSL. And SSL is pointless on said site if it's for instance a Let's Encrypt.

Depending on the ISP is trust worthy. In this day and age, none is trust worthy. Any network between server and browser can alter the content if it is NOT ssl encrypted. In US it is very often you see Verizon (not to single them out) modify the http content before they deliver to you. I guess it all comes down to if you want to get the actual content that is unmodified by the network routes between you and the server.

deepstack··on Request for comments regarding topics to be discussed at Dark Patterns workshop
Which remind me that DP of Signal is not very usable unless you give it access to your contact. When you try to send message by number it will say Error, Request failed: client error (429).
deepstack··on Diffie-Hellman for the Layman

deepstack··on Dominance of Apple and Google’s app stores impacting competition and consumers
It really comes down to business model. Apple is a hardware company, they money on things. Google/Alpha is an Ad company, they make money from your data. Of course they can make their code open source, however their practices is going to be targeted towards getting as much user data as possible.
deepstack··on Investigating why McDonald's ice cream machines are often broken [video]

deepstack··on Prisma – ORM for Node.js and TypeScript
>Prisma is not a community-project but built by a VC-funded company

Thanks for clarifying this. I know there tend to be a kneejerk reaction towards VC-funded software projects. How do you guys plan to make money on this?

deepstack··on Prisma – ORM for Node.js and TypeScript
Hmm, how does this compare to sequelize? Seems like the only reason to use prisma is the GraphQL integration. If anyone has used both please share. I've being mainly using sequelize and have being quite happy with it.
