deevolution··on MasterCard to open up network to cryptocurrencies
How can you possibly back up the claim that the USD is stable? My grandparents were able to buy several acres of land and build a house for 80k in the 1970s. Doing the same today costs 500k+!!! It's completely outrageous. Ths USD is far from stable and anyone who thinks so is either insanely privileged or ignorant!
deevolution··on Discord bans r/WallStreetBets server, subreddit went private for a while
It's been reported the mods temporarily killed the subreddit; it was part of the plan.
deevolution··on The M1 MacBook Air is the best computer I've ever owned
Parallels has been around for a while... I used it to play the homeworld franchise years ago but more recently I have used bootcamp. Not sure about performance on M1 tho.
deevolution··on Laptop stolen from Pelosi's office during storming of U.S. Capitol, says aide
If the people really want to overthrow the government, some jacked up defenses around capitol buildings won't stop anything imho, it just means the resistance will bring heavier weapons to match.
deevolution··on Hubble Captures Photo of Asteroid Worth 70k Times the Global Economy
Not to mention the price of nickel and iron would become negative...
deevolution··on Bitcoin is a disaster
Sounds like alot of complaining. If it's so terrible, don't use it or build something better! Bitcoin is completely optional. Thanks for sharing your opinion I guess?
deevolution··on YouTube to remove content that alleges widespread election fraud
Its unfortunate we can't independently verify the results of the election... imagine being able to run an election node and run the numbers yourself.
deevolution··on FTC Sues Facebook for Illegal Monopolization
Multisig encryption? Revoke key access to anyone you don't want to share your info with. Not sure if this is actually practical. Just a hunch on a potential solution.
deevolution··on Diem – A rebrand of Facebook’s Libra
A suitcase full of cash is much more difficult to transport risk-free compared to bitcoin.
deevolution··on Players Blame Skill-Based Matchmaking for Losing in Call of Duty
it sounds like a CoD socialist utopia simulator where every player has an equal outcome regardless of skill: 1.0 k/d. k/d creeping above 1.0? Let's distribute those gains to other players by curbstomping you for a bit. K/d falling below 1.0? Here's a couple of easy and free "k/d UBI" matches to boost you up. Who could have guessed this results in a mediocre gameplay experience?
deevolution··on Less screen time and more sleep critical for preventing depression
Anecdotely, I can confirm that most of the time that I read hackernews comments I tend to get depressed.
deevolution··on The world needs nuclear power and we shouldn’t be afraid of it
Where do you put all the waste you generated covering renewistan with all the equipment and infrastructure you had to build??? Is that not an environmental disaster??? The environmental impact of all nuclear would be an order of magnitude smaller.
deevolution··on The world needs nuclear power and we shouldn’t be afraid of it
If it were easier you'd think we'd be getting alot more energy from geothermal but we don't.

Global Nuclear: 2,500 TWh Global Geothermal: 12.8 GWh

deevolution··on The world needs nuclear power and we shouldn’t be afraid of it
Nuclear really is the only viable option at scale...

“Two terawatts of photovoltaic would require installing 100 square meters of 15-percent-efficient solar cells every second, second after second, for the next 25 years. (That’s about 1,200 square miles of solar cells a year, times 25 equals 30,000 square miles of photovoltaic cells.) Two terawatts of solar thermal? If it’s 30 percent efficient all told, we’ll need 50 square meters of highly reflective mirrors every second. (Some 600 square miles a year, times 25.) Two terawatts of biofuels? Something like 4 Olympic swimming pools of genetically engineered algae, installed every second. (About 61,000 square miles a year, times 25.) Two terawatts of wind? That’s a 300-foot-diameter wind turbine every 5 minutes. (Install 105,000 turbines a year in good wind locations, times 25.) Two terawatts of geothermal? Build three 100-megawatt steam turbines every day—1,095 a year, times 25. Three terawatts of new nuclear? That’s a 3-reactor, 3-gigawatt plant every week—52 a year, times 25.” Add it up, and when you’re done, you’ve got an area about the size of America—“Call it Renewistan,” says Griffith—covered with stuff dedicated to generating humanity’s energy."

The green new deal is just political theater in order for the democratic party to get more money. You're deluding yourself if you think a political party is single handedly capable of solving climate change. As much as I want something like the green new deal to work, it probably won't even make a dent in the grand scheme of things unless they go full nuclear.

deevolution··on Pentagon funnels $7.4B in surplus military gear to police
The existence of the state is only possible because it controls a monopoly on violence. How else would it enforce laws? Do people think others will pay taxes out of good will? scoff
deevolution··on EU considers phasing out 1 and 2 cent coins
More evidence of fiat inflation. Most of the spare change I recieve gets lost or thrown away. Usually if I'm handed coins as change I tell the cashier to keep it because I know i'll never use it. Even homeless people scoff at me when I give them small change.
deevolution··on Judge temporarily blocks U.S. ban on TikTok downloads from U.S. app stores
Banning/setting up a firewall makes us no different than the CCP!

Personally I think all the effort and resources spent policing social media platforms is a complete waste and malinvestment. This looks like an overreach of government power.

deevolution··on Hal Finney’s proposal for optimizing Bitcoin to be enabled in Bitcoin Core
Goodluck with that idea. I'll be sure to check back on this next year to see if anyone has made progress on it.
deevolution··on Hal Finney’s proposal for optimizing Bitcoin to be enabled in Bitcoin Core
Bitcoin miners are utilizing excess energy that would otherwise have gone to waste. So there's nothing wasteful about it. In fact, miners must be as energy efficient as possible in order to remain competitive and profitable. Typically excess power is the cheapest source because there's no demand for it, hence why efficient miners use it. Check out great American mining[1] for example. They harvest wasted energy from gas flares to power bitcoin mining rigs.

deevolution··on Boeing cuts flight training pilots, will outsource jobs overseas
Or keep it alive for far beyond its expiration date.
deevolution··on Boeing cuts flight training pilots, will outsource jobs overseas
Boeing is already a nationalized business. They're financially propped up by the US government which is why they've been able to make all of these horrible decisions without any consequence. They're no longer a tech company. They're a zombie financial institution.
deevolution··on Palantir Moves Headquarters to Denver from Silicon Valley
Colorado is home to Lockheed Martin, one of the largest US defense contractors. Sounds like a solid culture fit for Palantir.
deevolution··on BitTorrent v2
I don't know if "reliable" is a good word for the legacy banking system. The banks in Cyprus for example siezed money from peoples accounts only a few years ago... its much harder for banks to seize bitcoin that you self-custody. Many wealthy people and now companies are beginning to view bitcoin as a safe haven asset because of its decentralized security model and censorship/seizure resistant properties.

deevolution··on Why has college gotten so expensive in the last 30 years? A blank check in 1993
Rising college tuition is clear evidence of runaway fiat currency inflation. As soon as the US severed the peg to gold, prices have done nothing but inflate. I think colleges have figured out people are willing to take on increasing amounts of debt. The cost of loaning / creating money to pay for college is zero, so the tuition price ceiling is effectively infinite.
deevolution··on Increasing wind turbine rotor blade visibility reduces avian fatalities
I think evolution should largely take care of the problem here. Evolve or die. It's the natural order.
deevolution··on Apple to kill Epic’s accounts on Friday the 28th
I'm done with Apple. They have lost me as a customer.
deevolution··on Apple to kill Epic’s accounts on Friday the 28th
I dont think government intervention is the solution to resolving the problem here. Epic is going to have to abandon Apple and suffer losses. What this exposes is deep centralization of devices and app platforms and its disgusting and I would expect a strong decentralized reaction to follow. It may not be immediate, but it will happen.
