dencodev··on Ask HN: What tangible benefits did you get from spending time on HN?
I learned how to negotiate when someone linked to the famous kalzumeus software article on the subject. I've probably made tens of thousands of extra dollars in my life from it.
dencodev··on Do Digital Platforms Reduce Moral Hazard? The Case of Uber and Taxis
I took a taxi once in my life. He deliberately missed an exit to add 10 minutes to trip. I told him I was going to the hospital to meet my partner who had just been taken there by ambulance. I'm glad taxis are dying.
dencodev··on It Costs $532,000 to Decommission Single Wind Turbine
I'll take it over the billions of tons of pollution spewed into the atmosphere from other energy production where we have zero feasible way to materially remove any of it

Have you considered calling the number tied to the account and asking them to help?
dencodev··on “User engagement” is code for “addiction”
Bummer this isn't available for android
dencodev··on Six indicted in multimillion dollar scheme to bribe Amazon staff
The advice here to tell your employer and law enforcement is such an awful idea. They're more likely to target you and suspect you coordinated with them even if you didn't. HR and legal isn't there to help you - they're there to help the company.
dencodev··on Survivor of CIA Torture and Rendition Supports Assange at Extradition Trial
You don't think it's in the public's interest to know that one of the two parties of our broken two party system is explicitly subverting a democratic process to get "their person" nominated? Given that getting nominated to one of the two parties is the only viable way to get elected, anything that compromises the integrity of the nomination process is frankly more important than the final voting process.

>why he went in bed with the Russians

This is unsubstantiated propaganda.

dencodev··on Trump offered to pardon Assange if he provided source for DNC emails – lawyer
>Assange is unprincipled enough that he'll say whatever Trump/the thugs running the West wants, so he can be freed.

The fact that he didn't go with the pardon offer this very page is discussing suggests that this is wrong. You don't think Assange had options to be freed in the past however many years?

"biased hit piece" indeed

dencodev··on Trump offered to pardon Assange if he provided source for DNC emails – lawyer
Their track record isn't about their expositions. It's about the integrity of the data they're leaking. They've never been fooled into leaking fake data, or data that had been tampered with.
dencodev··on Trump offered to pardon Assange if he provided source for DNC emails – lawyer
Or he might have gotten them directly from someone working at the DNC
dencodev··on Trump offered to pardon Assange if he provided source for DNC emails – lawyer
It's the most obvious possibility.
dencodev··on Trump offered to pardon Assange if he provided source for DNC emails – lawyer
You're missing the other obvious answer: he got the emails from someone directly at the DNC who wouldn't need a hacker. Assange has mentioned and discuss Seth Rich multiple times with the implication that he's somehow tied to work at Wikileaks. Even if it wasn't Seth, there are a lot of people who could have given him those emails other than hackers.
dencodev··on Ask HN: I'm a terrible developer, what now?
Thanks for this. It sounds very cool but very niche. Seems like you'd need to know the right person to get into this sort of work. Congratulations on all your success.

dencodev··on A Secret Recording Reveals Oil Executives’ Private Views on Climate Change
It's very telling that we had to create child labor laws. Someone had to be told that it was immoral and strictly forbidden from doing it.
dencodev··on Revisiting the spectacular failure that was the Bill Gates deposition
The difference is that the mafia has never managed to extort and murder and then be told they did nothing wrong by law enforcement. The mafia also never attempted to make the law say they did nothing wrong (outside of small scale bribery or threats). "Shattered" is more appropriate here because Microsoft did (and does) try to get favorable legal treatment that extends outsides the bounds of what the law intended on a national level with far reaching implications of what others can also get away with.
dencodev··on Bill Gates made his fortune through sheer robber-baronry
It's not just HN and reddit. It's anyone who's not living alone in the woods. Class consciousness is thankfully becoming more prevalent, and these days how could you not notice: the rich get richer, the 99% is worse off, the planet is being destroyed, there's no accountability, and electoralism is failing.

There's a large swath of pro-capitalism sentiment on HN because it's overwhelmed with people who've "won" the game at the expense of everyone else. I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't thousands of millionaires that read this site at least once a week.

dencodev··on Ask HN: I'm a terrible developer, what now?
The short answer is you can't. The ability to fuck off because I hate my job has always been important to me, so I've always lived frugally, didn't have kids, never had an expensive wedding, etc. I have some cash in the bank and recently quit my dev job because it was also making me very mentally unhealthy.
dencodev··on Ask HN: I'm a terrible developer, what now?
What is your job title, or what is it commonly called elsewhere? I'm desperately trying to get out of coding roles but hate just leaving my senior dev titles to rot and not help me in my next step.

Wow, it's totally stupid to have a court ruling essentially restricting your free speech on your own domain name.

dencodev··on Amazon deletes job listings for analysts to track ‘labor organizing threats’
HN is not the best platform to from anti-capitalism sentiments. There's a lot of privilege here and it makes people pretty blind to how awful capitalism is (and the things it creates, like anti-union sentiment).
dencodev··on Amazon drivers are hanging smartphones in trees to get more work
I think most people reading it don't realize this. I thought it was pretty obvious when I first read it that the odds of replicating what Tim did was very low. It's about as likely as those people who lucked out on some affiliate keyword and now making $500k+ a year with a static html page with affiliate links and consistently places in first place on google. Plenty of stories of this happening, even on HN
dencodev··on Pinterest pays $89.5M to terminate San Francisco office lease
I know many web devs and they all use mice at their desks in the office.
dencodev··on Physicists found a new quantum paradox that casts doubt on a pillar of reality
Conversely, I would wonder why anyone would simulate something so similar to their own reality. We've already seen with humans that history repeats itself endlessly. Humans haven't really fundamentally changed in thousands of years. And humans do studies of the sociology of other species all the time. I think it'd be much more entertaining to simulate a world the laws are near opposite of our own. I would want to see what a species is capable of when restraints are lifted. To limit them to a single planet seems boring.

As an aside, I think one of my personal arguments that we're in a simulation is that we live in such an interesting time. We're beyond a world with 95% farmers. Technology is advancing faster than ever before. It's such a critical time in human history and the 20th century is personally where I'd choose to start a human simulation. It's convenient that this is our shared spot in time.
