devcpp··on Older iPhones, iPads banned as agency says Apple infringed on Samsung patent
Come on, all of this is fairly obvious. Let's say you take a Nokia brick and want to put one touch screen instead of a display and an input panel. What do you do? Something that looks exactly like that. The screen gets larger, the buttons go down and everything else stays the same (yeah, pre-iPhone dumb phones had nice icons in a grid too, remember?).

I mean, you're not going to put the speakers behind, or put fragile sharp corners, or put the buttons on the middle of the screen, just because Apple did something similar!

This is fairly obvious stuff when developing a smart phone out of a dumb phone. Dumb phones looked alike too, just like fridges and microwaves look alike, and that's because these things just make sense.

devcpp··on Vine for Android
People wanted GIFs with sound, they got GIFs with sound.
devcpp··on Show HN: It's hard to make friends offline, so we built a solution
The hackers are an efficient way to advertise a product for free. They are continually online and like to go from website to website and talk about stuff they just learned about.
devcpp··on How to make wealth (2004)
The original statement is thus valid.
devcpp··on The overlooked issue of Windows 8
I'm on Windows 7. It takes one click to postpone the update for four hours. And yet every four hours I get angry at Microsoft for a minute because of this.
devcpp··on A bill in Congress legalizes cell phone unlocking and fixes the DMCA
Moneyocracy: the government rules by the the majority of the money, not of the people.
devcpp··on Facebook in talks to buy Waze for $1B
Seems like they want to cover ground by buying every single startup that is successful and remotely related to social networking. This is where the startup economy falls and monopolies go bad.
devcpp··on Remaining .io domain names of common words
Beautiful name. I hope you make awesome stuff out of it. Don't sit on it!
devcpp··on Let's Make GitHub Better, Together
Windows, FF as well. It needs the divx plugin but then works flawlessly.

Granted, needing additional plugins is kind of bad. But I don't know an easy way to embed very short videos so it's as good a solution as any.

devcpp··on Quotations Of The Dread Pirate Roberts, Founder Of Silk Road
There isn't a country with enough police to protect everyone from physical harm caused by others at nearly all times (statistically speaking)? I doubt it.

And I doubt OP was speaking about those times when the country is entirely on fire or the police department has been nuked. Rather, I think the point is that the police will do anything they reasonably can do to help.

devcpp··on Big-O Algorithm Complexity Cheat Sheet
>what is b and d anyway?

Breadth and depth. These could apply to graphs as well, since these algorithms draw a tree while traversing the graph.

devcpp··on My former employer Opera Software has filed a lawsuit against me
They probably just want to tell their employees that sharing "trade secrets" won't be tolerated. Nothing better for that than a lawsuit with ridiculous amounts of money. It might fail but it sends a strong message.

Not that I don't despise this kind of practices...

devcpp··on My former employer Opera Software has filed a lawsuit against me
Opera might have been ahead in the past, but is it still ahead? Having tried their browser, I must have missed something because I think Firefox with addons is way better.

I find brand fidelity particularly nonsensical when a company is going downhill on the quality of its products.

devcpp··on I knew exactly how she felt
You're absolutely right.

Read this: http://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/1bp44q/til_ge....

Basically, Lucas did the funding on his second movie, which encouraged him to use clever marketing strategies (since the profit was all for him).

So he came up with this idea of selling his boring movie to nerds (even though it's entirely unrelated) and it worked! He simply spotted an under-exploited demographic, an age-old business strategy. He's comparable to Steve Jobs, who found the hipster design demographic, for fabulous marketing genius.

devcpp··on Stocks Plunge, Quickly Recover, on Fake Tweet
If people with large pockets are dedicated enough to monitor Twitter, it must probably have proven efficient enough to justify doing it. I don't expect them to stop doing so until the fake tweets situation goes very big. And I'm sure Twitter will react with stronger authentication before it gets that bad.
devcpp··on Teen: I Am Not the Boston Marathon Bomber
Hey Reddit isn't going to sort everything for the FBI and give them names of suspects to arrest. That's the job of the FBI.

All we are saying is that Reddit, 4chan and others may help the FBI if they care to watch these threads. That might or might not be helpful but it can't hurt as long as the FBI isn't willingly looking away, which might then trigger the vigilante action.

devcpp··on Don't send me a message to tell me I have a message
Dark patterns suck. I'll shame companies that do this, regardless of how efficient it is. We should be focusing on selling products, not manipulating clients into buying them.

A business that needs this kind of practices is a sloppy one that will collapse before it gets big. It's a waste of time and money on both sides.

devcpp··on Buyer sued for posting factual negative review on eBay
The power of ebay resides in being able to find any product that comes to mind on auction at virtually any given time. Therefore, no one I know bothers to check the competition (if it even exists) before they bid. The same known problem occurs with Facebook regarding friends. I don't see any solution, this ease of use is more important to most customers than ToS.
devcpp··on You know, Google, the web already had this feature
You're thinking free software. Open source does not mean free. But you're right, open source without being free is pretty bad, as is locking your devices on your software and your own only, even for the purpose of making the experience "perfect".
devcpp··on You know, Google, the web already had this feature
Oh come on, even Microsoft has their "open source" website: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/openness/default.aspx

This is marketing bullshit directed at developers angry at all their surveillance, their walled gardens, their "you can't replace our OS" and so on.

devcpp··on Waiting for a 1TB SSD below $1 per GB?
First, no. HDD recovery is expensive but possible in many cases.

Secondly, no one say it should be counted as a weakness, the guy above was just pointing out that it's probably not a strength, as someone above claimed.

devcpp··on How to implement HTTPS in an insufficient manner
How do you know they do?

That said, you should have seen my face when my ISP emailed me my very password for online access, in plain text. It was something like 123456. Unforgivable double offense.

devcpp··on What's Actually Wrong with Yahoo's Purchase of Summly
Mr. Ka-Shing himself, sure. He oversees every single investment his firm makes. I totally believe this.

Besides, we don't know Ka-Shing isn't reading TechCrunch all day.

devcpp··on Browser Wars Revisited
I switched from IE to Firefox and, looking back, I don't regret it, for the very same reason. Mozilla is the only non-profit and Mozilla is by far the best FOSS browser. Besides, Mozilla keeps pushing for new and better schemes and is one of the few companies that won't track your web usage.

I just wish more people knew about these. Most people just look at the speed with one tab open and pick Chrome.

devcpp··on Google applies for another Glass patent, controlling your home
>I'll commit suicide long before this kind of "technology" arrives.

That's kind of strong...

>It does nothing to advance the human race except make them lazier.

You seem to believe that humans are supposed to use their muscles to do stuff. But why should we not voluntarily "evolve" to become intelligences that control our environment through our brains and harness it through minimal interactions? Is our goal not to discover everything and discard unimportant distractions such as opening the fridge and going to the mall from the seeking of knowledge?

It's a matter of opinions, but just remember that this is not intrinsincally bad. If we can alter our bodies to become detached from physical needs such as feeding, sleeping and everything that we do to prevent our deaths, I can say I'd embrace it.

devcpp··on A Difficult Situation
>Your argument is basically akin to saying that, because I told some dirty jokes to my friends in private, I'm never allowed to complain when someone tells a dirty joke in public.

Ah, Twitter is now considered private but two devs speaking in their chairs are pretty much delivering a speech.

Besides, you're putting words in my mouth. I never said you're not allowed to do these things, but you shouldn't be allowed to complain about it, just like senators who watch porn lose credibility when passing laws against all forms of porn.

devcpp··on A Difficult Situation
No, it's a lack of consistency. This is required of every person making a claim, not her specifically, so this has nothing to do with ad hominem.
devcpp··on Show HN: Weekend project, Intro.js
I've never once in my life met a person that sincerely thinks that each and every inhabitant of a country is evil when their leaders are.

By the way, "Iranians are evil" does not count, as it generally implies "most Iranians are evil", which, if you count it as a democracy (it is to some extent) and consider the elected leaders to be evil (a reasonable claim from a particular perspective), would be true.

devcpp··on Firefox OS Simulator – previewing version 3.0
Exactly. If they called it Internet Explorer OS, why not? But not while abusively using the Windows brand name that most people would blindly get because they don't know better.
devcpp··on Fix the DMCA
Oh, that's good. Why do we have lawsuits in general then? I'd bet more guilty people are prosecuted than innocents. Let's make the economy of the judge's salary and assume everyone is guilty.
