IE6: hold my beer

devjam··on Weatherme CLI Tool
I had the same thought; this is in my shell RC:

    alias weather='f() { curl wttr.in/${1:-sydney} };f'

Or the slightly less antagonistic version ;)

Unless it's time-sensitive/critical, from the point of view of an OSS maintainer why should it matter whether a patch took 3 days to develop, or 3 minutes? As long as the quality and correctness is consistent across those patches, as a maintainer I'd encourage a wider base of developers who are fluent in my codebase, even if their initial PRs took slightly longer.
devjam··on Parmigiano Reggiano makers embedding tiny trackers in rind to fight cheese fraud
I read this as: "Parmigiano Reggiano makers embedding tiny crackers in rind ..."

Brilliant!

devjam··on Bits of advice I wish I had known
> My idea of living my fullest potential barely overlaps with the apparent life of the person that you admire.

And that's fine; I read the point about "knowing how to live" to mean: he knew the life _he_ wanted to live, and lived it.

devjam··on Using LEOs and GEOs
The speedtest looks quite similar to the one baked into Google's search results; did any of your codebase make it across?

Also, kudos (?) it outlived Google+ as linked from the footer :-D

devjam··on Update on the Atlassian outage affecting some customers
There’s some assumption here that the script directly updated/deleted customer data.

In a microservices-centric architecture, it’s entirely possible that the script was used to orchestrate the change across a number of other systems, and an update on one of them led to to undefined behaviour and/or unforeseen consequences.

Yes, agree - if it were the "My Courses" page/section, it could definitely be read as such.

devjam··on Ask HN: What are some “10x” software product innovations you have experienced?

Although UN-installing software was possibly even worse!

devjam··on Changes to sharing and viewing news on Facebook in Australia
That quote didn't do Malcolm Turnbull any favours.

He was certainly one of the more forward-thinking, progressive PMs we've had. As just one example, he actually believes climate change is real.

Go's HTTP server is typically imported as a package, just like `math/rand`, `time` or `fmt`. The resultant compiled binary would then be larger than if it had not been imported, but the package itself doesn't contribute to LOC.

FWIW, the app does import and run Go's HTTP server for "server" commands: https://github.com/geohot/minikeyvalue/blob/master/src/main....

devjam··on How I write back ends
Another option over Ansible/Saltstack for managing remote hosts, is using something like Fabric [1]. It's a "remote execution framework"; basically a Python wrapper around SSH for defining hosts and writing tasks that are executed in a shell on your fleet.

Under the "Better parallelisation" section, you don't need to proxy methods for your sync.Mutex if you embed the type.

    type FileReader struct {
        File            *os.File
        LastCharIsSpace bool
        sync.Mutex
    }
And your Lock() and Unlock() calls on FileReader would just work.
devjam··on Facebook is using the iPhone’s camera as users scroll their feed
Yes, it's a bug; the bug is that it was the rear-facing camera, not the front-facing one.

Yes, it has changed a lot since those days... I visited some friends there about a year ago and was very pleasantly surprised.

Glad to hear it is working out for you :-)
